Jeez, my back ached from watching that. I did that as a skipper in the off-season, eighties thru to early naughties. We only had the single handle Alveys . Twentiy-odd hooks down, get to the bottom, tighten up, get the last drop on ice, hooks baited, start winding up. Rinse and repeat, bloody hard work. Amateurs who think it would be a dream life would be in for a rude shock. Then you have to unload.

Good to see the old girl still bringing fish on board. Ive had some great times on the Valiant. Cape f yeah, Murions, 2 and a half T overnight, surfing her wake at Monks head sand bank. (Before the marina was around), Nosing up and boxing out on the sand bank. I'm really glad i got to experience the bay before all the governments mafia moved in😂. Is Kenya still going or has the local council finally got rid of it. Loved living there.

Also, save your back by getting some kind of platform for the matresses, get it up to waist height. And to save the deckie having to go up the bow, have a permanently attached riding rope long enough to go back to the tipper, with a big eye spliced in. Get your required length of anchor rope out, tie off to it. Then motor up when you are pulling the anchor, grapple it, untie , on the winch.

Yeh looking for a second ice box that will do that job. But love the idea of the riding rope, I actually just saw a video the other day of someone doing this and thought it would be perfect. Just finished a trip where we had to stay on anchor again because the wind came up after dark (new moon) and didn't want to send him up there again. So will definitely be giving that one a go next trip. Cheers.

Glad to help. I learnt all this sh*t the hard way. You can make the rope heavier ( 25mm) and have protection on the rub points. Don't you hate it when the wind runs @ 180 degrees to the tide 😝@@TheSkippersLog

Cheers, yeh actually excited by the fact I have so much to learn doing this. We have the main big box and a few smaller esky's that are all filled with ice. Have to move it to put fish in.

Is the chain weight on a breakaway in case you hang bottom?
@adammcgeorge3538 Жыл бұрын
Twas a ripper of a tangle there too adam, it makes me feel better to see a pro like you do it too :)
@adammcgeorge3538 Жыл бұрын
Hey Adam, I was just thinking, which is dangerous I know, but perhaps a way to hang the rig along the side of the boat to add all the hooks at once as opposed to one at a time would speed things up. Not sure if it would work as well for fish removal. Anyway, great work, steep learning curve, but keep at it and I’m sure you will make it pay, and gain efficiency. We enjoyed the footage, so don’t be too hard on yourself.

The bottom here is pretty flat so don't bother running break away. Only way you get stuck is if a cod runs into his hole.
@adammcgeorge3538 Жыл бұрын
@@TheSkippersLog ours is reefy, so we lose plenty of rebar with 30lb breakaway. If you bottom is nicer and less snaggy, the tile fish guys in the US do a weight on bottom and lighter weight on top to put the whole rig flat on the bottom for tiles, not sure if that would work where you fish or not.

We definitely just want a vertical rig, the golds school up high and tight when they are hungry. @@adammcgeorge3538
