Checking out the new universal remote tuner by Chameleon Antennas, the URT1 does not need any special radio specific interface cable, and can be used with almost any antenna from 160M - 6M.
This auto tuner is fast. It can tune 5-1500 ohms with 16,000 memories for instant recall when changing bands.
Use it for a random wire antenna, or an off center fed inverted V. Use it with a flag pole in an HOA and make a great ground mounted vertical.

Great review, Eric! Sure wish Chameleon would provide you/viewers a discount on that. $400 is a bit steep for some operators on a "tight budget". I am sure the quality is spot on though. Glad you are feeling better and take care, my brother! -73 KQ4KIO (Tampa Bay)

Hi Eric. What a great tuner for 100 Watt radios (or QRP). I worked with similar tuners before. I comes very handy when you just can put up one antenna. But the nice thing here is that it does not require specific brands and protocols !! In the filed I would have hoped not to see the controller but in the shack this is not a problem at all. Because it runs on 12 Volts, you can use the same battery in the field as for the portable radio. Great. I don't know European shops will take it in, otherwise ordering in USA will add customer taxes ofcourse. Great video. 73 Phil ON4VP

A tabletop antenna tuner and an antenna coupler (like the CHA URT1, which is a remote tuner) are both devices used in amateur radio setups to improve the performance of antennas, but they operate differently and are placed at different points in the antenna system. 1. **Tabletop Antenna Tuner:** - **Location:** It is typically located at the radio transceiver's end, inside the operating room. - **Function:** Its primary purpose is to match the impedance of the radio transceiver to the impedance of the antenna system. This matching is crucial because most transceivers are designed to work best with an antenna system that presents a specific impedance (often 50 ohms). - **How It Works:** It adjusts the impedance that the radio 'sees' so that it appears to be a perfect match, regardless of the actual impedance of the antenna system. This adjustment helps in reducing the Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) and maximizing power transfer from the radio to the antenna. - **Limitation:** Since the tuner is located at the transceiver end, it doesn't change the actual impedance mismatch that exists between the feedline and the antenna. This can result in energy losses, especially if the feedline is long and the impedance mismatch is significant. 2. **Antenna Coupler (Remote Tuner):** - **Example:** CHA URT1. - **Location:** It is placed at the feed point of the antenna, usually outdoors and as close as possible to the antenna itself. - **Function:** Its job is to actually transform the impedance of the antenna system to match the feedline (and ultimately the transceiver). By doing this at the feed point, it ensures that the feedline is operating at or near its optimal impedance, reducing losses. - **How It Works:** When an antenna coupler like the CHA URT1 tunes an antenna, it adjusts the antenna's electrical length to make it resonant at a specific frequency or range of frequencies. This is essential for non-resonant antennas or multi-band operation. - **Advantage:** Since the coupler is located at the antenna feed point, it minimizes losses in the feedline by ensuring that most of the RF energy is radiated by the antenna. This is particularly beneficial for long feedlines or when operating on bands where the antenna is not naturally resonant. In summary, while a tabletop antenna tuner adjusts the impedance seen by the transceiver to minimize SWR and optimize power transfer, an antenna coupler like the CHA URT1 adjusts the actual impedance at the antenna's feed point, which improves overall system efficiency and reduces feedline losses.

What about those high voltages in a longer wire , shouldn't a unun be it a 9/1, 49/1 or 64/1 or some other kind be used to prevent the 2,500 to 4,000 from hitting the electronics in the tuner, plus a much easier tune? Your tuned antenna circuit is just shorter and less lossy at the fed point than tuning 100 ft of coax etc?

Thank you for your interest in our CHA URT1 remote tuner. I understand your concerns regarding the pricing. Let me explain why our products, particularly remote HF tuners like the CHA URT1, tend to have a higher price point compared to others, including tabletop tuners. Specialized Components and Build Quality: The CHA URT1 is designed to withstand harsh environments, which is crucial for remote operation. This involves the use of high-quality, weather-resistant materials that can endure extreme conditions without compromising performance. The cost of these specialized components is generally higher than what is used in more conventional, indoor equipment. Advanced Features and Design: Remote HF tuners require sophisticated design elements that allow for reliable remote operation, often over significant distances and in variable weather conditions. These tuners must also handle a wide range of impedances and efficiently match antenna systems to the transceiver, which demands precise and robust engineering. This level of complexity significantly contributes to the cost. Development and Testing: The development phase of products like the CHA URT1 involves extensive research and rigorous testing to ensure they meet the demands of diverse operating conditions and frequencies. This process is costly but essential to deliver a product that performs reliably in the field. Market Niche and Scale of Production: Products designed for the amateur radio community, especially high-performance gear, are typically produced in smaller quantities compared to mass-market electronics. Lower production volumes usually mean higher per-unit costs due to economies of scale not being as pronounced. Comparatively, tabletop tuners are generally used in more controlled, indoor environments, which allows for the use of less expensive materials. They also tend to be simpler in design and functionality, which reduces the cost of production. We understand that the price can be a significant factor when choosing equipment. However, we believe that the durability, performance, and specific capabilities of our remote HF tuners provide long-term value that justifies the investment, especially for operators who need the most reliable and robust tuning in diverse and challenging environments. Thank you for bringing up your concerns, and I hope this explanation helps clarify why the CHA URT1 is priced as it is. If you have any more questions or need further assistance, please feel free to reach out!
