Videos from k6ark showing the adventure of summits on the air and low power got me into the hobby. A lot of people that we meet seem to light up when we tell them about summits on the air and parks on the air in particular. It's a good gateway!

Unfortunately the Blue tooth feature doesn't work on IOS. Hope the guys at RE will solve that issue. Lots of people have iPhones. Otherwise AA-500 is an excellent tool.

We literally just talked about this on our podcast. I’ve seen too many HAM guys try to chase away newer HAMs with gatekeeping, purity tests, and elitism. You can’t grow a community with that element closing the door behind them, and as the community ages without new blood it’ll start to die off. I got into GMRS as this element isn’t as prevalent in that community yet, and I hope it never takes root.

Why couldn't you use a digital (any, kind really) handheld with the ftm300 in crossband repeat? Your handheld would do the digital work, and the Yaesu would just act as a repeater. I can hear, in glorious analog FM, the sound of someone using DMR on my local repeater...what's the difference?

I started in the 70s and loved to communicate with people in places other than my own. My job was headed in electronics direction and I enjoyed putting together about 10 Heathkits over 6 years. Communicating and building (and servicing) rigs and antennas just appealed to me. I have to confess, I'm not a big fan of DMR, FT-8, and stuff requiring the Internet. They sound too expensive, involving too much use of software to program things even though I have a degree is CS and was a system analyst for 22 years. I'd just rather turn a dial, push a button, and talk or use CW.

27 MHz CB is good for skip, but for local over the road, I wish if it in VHF or UHF like Australia.

I would love to have this radio, but I just don't have two grand laying around for a basically dual band VHF, UHF radio. I already have the IC-7100 and I just can't justify spending that kind of money for this radio. Now, should I win the lottery, then I will buy one. Until then I hope that everyone who has one enjoys it. Thanks for posting.

I agree. When I got into the hobby I was in my early 20s. Those who had been licensed a long time were anxious to help and advise. It was wonderful. But some years after that, it became just a lot of cliques. As a member of the local club, I showed up to help with Field Day. Not ONE person offered to let me operate a radio, or even just help set up. I was at one time recording secretary of the club. After saying hello, no one even talked to me. I stayed around about 4 hours and tried to have some conversations, but no one wanted to be bothered by a new-comer, even after I had been licensed for 5 years and had my own home station. I never went back, and I dropped my membership. No one ever asked why. You're either in with the IN crowd, or you're OUT.

The word you're looking for is Relevance. Ham radio needs a purpose that gives it every day RELEVANCE . The problem is that most ham operators think that ham radio itself is relevant. No, today what is relevant is what the ham radio operator does with his or her radio. That is, "the community benefit that is achieved by use of the radio." It's not just about making contacts; ordinary non-ham folks don't see the relevance in the contact exchange. And truthfully they have a point.

One thing that annoys me at least in HF is when operators say thier call sign so fast you barely can recognise what they're saying... Sure, reception windows can be tight at times but come on...

Anyone can communicate from social media to anyone in the world and not need a license..So social media is replacing ham radio..my opinion..this is why code was eliminated,because the ham population was down and they needed new licensee's..So they made it easier to get the license.

There's a story in my home town of Puckett, ms . pop: 300 people. His name was Fred Polk. He lived right in town. He had a very powerful base station. They said he would get drunk and get on there hollering. HEY WHAT YALL DOIN?!?! IT WOULD GROUND OUT THE JACKSON AIRPORT. 😂 the police finally told him to stop. He told them cops if they came back he was gonna shoot em...... and ... they came back with about 20 cops. he said don't come up to my screen door . When he did, all you heard was a shotgun blast , which knocked the cop off the porch . Fatal wound. The cops immediately lit the whole house up. I think he killed 2 or 3 cops. He ended up dying in jail. Helluva story.... hard to imagine something like that happened in my town. Makes me Wanna do the same thing😂, minus the beer guns and cops 😅

Eric an excellent thought. What matters is promoting the benefits of the hobby, we were social media before it became a thing, plus we need to show its ease of use and ability for quick setup and it must have a low financial entry point. Otherwise we get the I have an iPhone line…

I have been wanting to set up a mobile field repeater for camping site. I have a 8ft painter pole that extends to 50ft. I want to put 2 antennas on the tower/pole for this. With the 2 antennas so close, what kind of filtration should I need on each to prevent crosstalk? Both radios will be on UHF, not on VHF.

It's not a young hobby, period. Like others have said, the young people aren't getting into the hobby. What they are doing is growing up and finding the hobby years later. I was forced into the hobby after getting my FCC license for aviation stuff. With all the radio stuff i had to learn in that process, i ended up finding out about HAM through my professor. This got me interested because of the fun projects that were loosely based around radio stuff. I ended up studying for 2 weeks and took the tech and gen in the same sitting. Eays peasy. Again, though, at 26, i only found out about HAM because of other avenues.

makes no sense that on a vehicle it has to be at the corner to work with ground plane but centered with base kit. If you know what I mean
@dr.jacknilsson19706 күн бұрын
Hi Mark. I understand your question. In brief, on the vehicle the antenna utilizes ground plane metal counterpoise in various directions from where it is essentially 'centered' on a corner, including the downward side-of-vehicle metal acting analogously to a downward leg of a dipole, and the horizontal roof metal in various azimuth directions. In the lab I perfected/optimized the CompacCounterpoise to have good SWR & elevation coordinate signal pattern at all VHF & UHF frequencies as per specifications.
