Very well explained. I do, however (there is always a 'however') wish there was a section on the ballast keel included.

How do you buy a kit or plans. Can it have a bilge keel as I live with 7 metre tidal It's a problem to have a standard keel.

The backstay looks in the way of the mainsail and also the tiller. Is this an oversight or just the model issue?
@donmcintyre60374 жыл бұрын
It is a Running backstay and only used in stoms when the mainsail is deep Reefed or with the big gennaker in strong winds...it is rope soft..so OK :)

the scow bow is getting popular these days I would be interested if it would make any difference to performance.
@bandbyachtdesigns2 жыл бұрын
Since the 5.80 design is a one design class and not a box rule class you won't see hull design development with it like you do other box rule classes like the minis. The bluff bow designs are fast because of their beam (power via righting moment) not just due to the bluff bow which is just sort of a byproduct of carrying the beam as far forward as possible. But yes the idea has proven fast in reaching conditions but to get the full benefit you need lots of sail and probably a canting keel. What does lots of sail or "max beam" mean though? Again it really only make sense when thinking about a box rule class that has limits on sizes. There might be a faster hull shape you could build with the same rig but who would you race it against?

Great boat! I really love it and will consider building one. Can you show in some pictures or video the dimensions width/length/height of the various parts of the boat. I would also love to see a version of the same design, but about 7-8 meters long.

I just watched a video on Ran sailing channel about a Polish guy that built a boat from this designer and sailed across the Atlantic. He sold his boat in the caibean and is going home to build an 8M cruiser, also from this designer -so I know the design exists. Check out the video. Small, fast ,and light and good things, but there is an intrinsic brutality to their function.

Very nice design. As I live in South Africa, I would want to cut the parts here to save on shipping. I have access to cnc machines. Would you be prepared to sell me the cad files? as a one-off build.
@bandbyachtdesigns2 жыл бұрын
Adrian, We do not sell the files. They are property of the class organization and are distributed by them. There is a CNC kit producer in South Africa already. Check the 5.80 website. ckdboats.blogspot.com/2020/05/class-globe-580-kits.html. You may still be able to purchase the files for a one off build but you would have to ask Don.

Great video, the bottom of fame C you explained the notches will be in the lower beam but some of the drawings still show the notches in the side beam? How is the keel going to be attached?
@donmcintyre60374 жыл бұрын
Keel Has 10 x12mm Stainless steel Bolts..NOT welded to the keel so you just undo, push them out, break the seal and take the keel off...both halves of the bolb undo so then two guys can handle each of three parts.. :)

Looks like the rudder is cut from flat plywood, I haven't had a close look at the rules but how is foil shaping handled etc Great video, very clearly demonstrates the thought and effort that went into making this an achievable project for many people despite the overall complexity. Well done.
@bandbyachtdesigns4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! the rudder blade in the parts here was simply meant to be used as a template. If I were building a rudder for this boat it would probably be laminated from quarter sawn wood then cut to the profile and shaped in to the foil shape section shown in the plans before being glassed. The process would be similar to how we build our centerboards only a bit larger. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXuTlK2Im919oZI If we are asked for it we can supply fully CNC cut and foiled rudders ready to be glassed and finished. We offer this for the centerboard for our larger boat kits.

@takatustew98232 жыл бұрын
Nice detailed expose of the construction detail. Question - what are the benefits of sloping cabin bulkhead, looks nice but a vertical would stop water dripping into cabin when washboards are out. extending cabin sides back with angle on back edge would cover visual effect,

It is, there is a "stem cap" a second layer that goes on after planking.

Does this design have the option of twin bilge keels instead of a fin keel?
@bandbyachtdesigns2 жыл бұрын
Since the boat is a one design there are no other variations shown in the plans that Januz drew but it would not be too hard to tie bilge keels into the longitudinal bulkheads (bunk sides).

It is a very nice design and would make for a fun coastal boat... but a 5.80 is a tortured way to cross an ocean. Capable, but miserable. A 650 should be the minimum .

I don't like the design of a keel. It will snap off due to fatigue and the boat will capsize - like most do. You need a full keel!
