What a great build! I built a Goat Island Skiff about 10 years ago and it has been a very faithful friend ever since! From solo sailing, to island camping with a couple of friends, to sailing with the family, it has been just right for me. A wise man once told me that the amount of fun you have on a boat is inversely proportional to its size. This is very true of the Goat Island Skiff. The fact that it takes 15 min. to rig and can be launched and recovered so easily by a single person means that you’ll never hesitate to take it out even for just an hour long rip in a stiff breeze. Thanks for sharing your build. I wish you many years of fun with this beautiful boat!

Thank you Albert! You almost pointed out all the reasons why I chose the GIS! It's such an versatile boat, hard to beat! And my GIS lives 10ft from the water at all times, so I only have to put the mast up and I'm sailing in 5 minutes! I love camping too and have a couple of videos on Rat Island doing so... take a peek! 😉

@@TheBoatRambler As a skilled craftsman who was struck down in an instant with what is now a lifelong disability my advice is never put off anything in life. I have built, refitted, sprayed and sailed so many different boats in my life I've lost count but the urge to do it again never leaves me. That's why I loved this series so much. Crack on and do it or you might find yourself with nothing more exciting to do tomorrow than live your life vicariously through the endeavours of others. My only pieces of my advice to anybody undertaking a project of any size never ever under estimate the value of hand tools, sharp blades and develop a truly maniacal passion for sanding.

One of the best video series on KZbin. Entertaining and informative. Massive congrats on the build but few will know how many hours it must have taken to edit all of the individual episodes. I've built boats all my life so I particularly admire how clever you were with a very limited array of tools. Goes to show you don't need a shipyard to build a fine boat. I could make a million comments on what could have been done differently but that would just detract from a marvellous project fuelled by love passion and huge determination. God bless you my friend and I look forward to your next project!

Fantastic build! Lots of craftsmanship.. I would have done only one thing different... I would have made a tapered boxed mast (tapered for looks) and with a carbon surf mast inside for extra strength.
@TheBoatRambler3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Wim Braber. This mast is tapered, goes from 87 at its widest to 56 at the very top. To use a windsurf mast inside as reinforcement it would have to be in contact with the wooden staves which are around 84mm apart. windsurf masts are only 55-60 max I believe, some other structure would have to be built inside and at the end it could be just too heavy. This mast weights 10kg and has 13 liters buoyancy which helps preventing it from turtling after a capsize.

Thanks Andy. I did sail a lot of different boats, Optimists, 420, Laser, small wooden dinghies all the way to 6 Ton traditional wooden boats, but I don't consider myself an expert in any of them! Never spent long enough in one "class" to really dominate the boat. Until I started getting my Skippers licenses I had never sailed a cruiser.
