Today's video is all about a delivery of cold hardy palms from Hardy Palms, the tough and fast growing evergreen beauties that are Trachycarpus Naini Tal and some more amazing Trachycarpus fortunei x princeps crosses. They're great palms for UK gardens, I look at their beautiful colouring, why growing hybrid palms is the best of both worlds and why planting fast growing palms like Trachycarpus in smaller sizes is great for your tropical garden budget and their future growth, leading to tougher, faster growing and hardier plants in years to come.
Here's a link to the Trachycarpus section of the Hardy Palms website:

Hi George, like yourself I've not ordered anything from nigel for a while, I did actually get a princeps hybrid from him about 5 years ago and is starting too put on a show. It's at the back of my larger pond so in the winter it comes into its own. I have another one I got from my palm shop 4 years ago and the coloring on the reverse of the leaves is amazing. On this occasion I bought an interesting trachycarpus Waggi Cross with martianus, and a waggi/ princeps. Always great quality plants and very reasonably priced too.

Hi Derek, that's great - I think I saw your pic on Facebook. They're all lovely plants. I imagine the waggie x princeps will grow to be absolute stunners, I've got some too. I was tempted by the other Martianus one you mentioned but gave it a miss this time - it could potentially be a beautiful palm as it matures for sure though!

Haha they best not be overwintering here! I appreciate the effort you've put into finding a goose pic! I'm not sure what Max would think of them to be honest, I imagine he'd mainly be frustrated that they wouldn't kick his ball around for him...

Fully agree with you that British grown palms addapt to my Scottish garden (east coast) much faster the the one from Spanish plantations for example 👍👍 I've bought Nanital from Nigel in March, great palm, like Fortunei on steroids. I have my own (from seeds) Princeps and Waggie x Princeps and I have to say the hybrid grows much faster then Princeps 🌴🌴

Great to hear you've had good experiences with Nainital in such a short time, I'm thinking about planting it between two Waggies so having a faster growth rate would help the combo look right. Also good news on the Waggie x Princeps, I've got some I picked up as young plants too, I'm excited to see them develop!

Thanks, they are lovely palms! I'm a bit lost in the universe of palms that grow in warmer countries but over here there's not as many choices so it pays to find the interesting ones! I don't know too much about the geese other than some birds choose to come from colder countries and spend the winter in our country and others migrate away. These were heading North though which doesn't really clear it up, unless they've come from a colder country to the East and are heading to a more suitable overwintering site further North.

Hi George just discovered your channel and finding the content really useful. I remember you mentioned you had a Cyathea medullaris. I’m interested what your going to do to over winter it. My greenhouse doesn’t arrive until March so I’m thinking of putting in the shed rather than in the house. Pretty sure it’s too risky to wrap like a dicksonian. I’ve a few Cyathea Cooperi which I think I will try to over winter in the house. All the Cyathea’s were bought this year so it’s m first winter. I found your Schefflera video very informative. I’ve got a Taiwaniana that’s had a very slow first year but despite this I’m thinking of adding some other varieties. Thx Robert
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Robert! I’ve taken the brave / risky step of actually planting my medullaris out but I know it’ll need serious protection. They’re reasonably tough but this far north they need more than just fleece in anything other than a mild winter, yes. If yours is small I’d certainly consider either the house or shed but don’t let it dry out and only bring it in when it’s cold or frosty, it’ll actually enjoy the milder autumn weather while it’s here!

Good luck with the Medullaris I hope it’s fine outside and planted and if so I will be brave enough to try it outside as well. It’s a pretty good size and in a pot at the moment. I can’t face losing it in the first year so will play it safe. I do have some big glass doors in a sort of alcove so could maybe watch the temperature on a thermometer there and maybe try it there. Do you grow Dendroseris Litoralis . I’ve got a small plant but planning on planting out next spring. I will check the Delaveya out.

@@GeorgesJungleGarden I got it at Chelsea from Kells Bay Nursery. It’s pretty small so I won’t plant it out until Spring. I think Desert to Jungle have it as well.
