New Coleus | shade garden recent order | Texas Gulf Coast Zone 9a/b

I recently received new coleus orders from Proven Winners and Rosy Dawn Gardens. Coleus and caladiums grow very well in our Gulf Coast shade gardens, and pollinators love coleus flowers. In March I purchased coleus from a Houston area nursery to plant in my shade garden and they have put on new growth. This order was for some drama in the shade garden. Last winter, I clipped trimmings from my favorite coleus plants. I stuck the trimmings in vases on my dining table. After the roots developed, I potted them up. Now my favorites from last year are thriving in my gardens. I was so proud of my cheap-o self! 😂

That is fantastic! Coleus are so easy to root in water that I had no excuse for not doing this too other than I waited to the last minute and then ran out of time because of the freeze. I tell myself I need to do better this year. I bet you are enjoying your larger coleus now! 👍😊

Beautiful coleus! Coleus are a favorite of mine. They love the Florida heat and most years even if we have slight freezes they come back from the roots

Thank you! I have grown coleus for the last couple of years now, and I have finally found shade plants that do well here. My coleus don't come back from when we freeze, so I should take cuttings.

Thank you for the Rosey Dawn online garden tip. I will surely place an order with them. I garden in drought-land California so these online nurseries that ship plants are a great resource. Somehow, all the "pretty plants" don't reach our neck of the woods.🐛🐞🦋

I'm glad you found that helpful. This is my first year ordering from them, so I don't have the plant experience with them ... but the plants they sent are healthy, they were packaged well, and I was so happy they were reasonably priced.

The Aristolochia tomentosa that is native in Texas doesn't perform the best for me. It seems to really crumble in our summer heat and humidity. But Aristolochia fimbriata (the White-veined Dutchman's Pipevine) is a hardy groundcover and doesn't miss a beat. Last year the caterpillars ate it to the ground at least 4 times and the plant didn't miss a beat and grew back quickly. It appreciates afternoon shade.

coleus is my fav, I have been planting it for 20 years or more...My fav is the mosaic and choco splash, which i cannot find so I may order seeds. I love how you can just pull off leaves off of a large plant put them in soil and they will grow, no need for rooting in water!! I now have 8 pots of it planted. I am in Oklahoma 7b. I love the electric lime in a pot with the deep burgundy...my coleus usually gets 18 inches tall. good video!! hope your plant ends up looking like the photo. I have 3 pots of the Volcanica and 2 pots of caladiums. I have a shade garden with hollyhocks, candytuft, coneflower, mexican hats, summer poinsettias, milkweed, bee balm, maximillian sunflower, heuchera, mint, sedum, and lantana

Ohhhh - your garden sounds lovely! 😍 Heuchera and hosta just don't do well down here, but coleus and caladiums do. I bet you have seen some gorgeous coleus through the years!

Beautiful! I love coleus with hot pink splashes! So jealous of your pipevine cats! I only find holes in my pipevines, but never cats. I think they’re getting eaten! 😢 Thanks for another wonderful tour!

You know, I have more success with pipevine caterpillars on my Aristolochia fimbriata than the Aristolochia tomentosa. For some reason they are not found on the ground cover like they are the vine. But, the Eastern black swallowtail cats are getting eaten left and right on my bronze fennel. 😕

@@ButterfliesNBirds I’ve had munching on both types of pipevine about equally this year. Last year, almost exclusively fimbriata. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I finally brought in some EBS cats and eggs. I swear the lizards are a bottomless pit!

Lol - my anoles are bottomless pits too! 😂 I have both green and brown Anoles. And I have so many in my yard again this year.
