I grew up without youtube. As a self taught artist I only had the public library and as a young kid Bob Ross. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience as a painter. It is remarkable to me having such resources to help expand ones painting skills! Much thanks! I pass your site along to anyone that has inquired about what I have been checking out in the web! I'm an old guy, in my 70s. Cataract in one eye, yellow tint to everything, I estimate 3,000 kelvin. The other eye had a cataract operation, so everything looks as daylight, about 5,500 kelvin. If I don't like a color, I just switch eyes! I don't stand a chance, but I paint anyway!

this man Hits the Nail on the HEAD when he says you got to paint , work at it....start over a million times over if need be. Painting and having passion for it is what will drive you to greatness...I love the things he says...so smart and so true. Its the People who do it THAT are doing it and learning what they need to be learning to get ahead.

I think what I enjoy most about your method Mark, is the great amount of scientific analysis and thinking that you used to devise it and make it practically flawless. You produce great students because you give them the practical understanding of why things are done a particular way.

As someone who had Rheumatoid Arthritis, when I started to follow an elimination diet, ( I eliminated all gluten, grains, vegetables and fruits) my arthritis went away. I eat meat (beef, pork, bison) fish (cod, salmon, shrimp, scallops) poultry, butter, lard & tallow, & Redmond’s real salt (it has minerals) . Sounds crazy I know, but whenever I start adding in stuff the inflammation & pain comes back.

Mark- I just ordered your colour checker. Normally, I close my eyes just a few seconds in order to eliminate previous impressions of light on my retina. Since a lot can happen while holding each colour in memory until I have it mixed on the palette, it just makes sense. I also wish to thank you for offering such valuable videos to the arts community. May you have the best of health and happiness for 2021 and beyond.

Nice vid. Another problem with monitors is the light used to light your easel and palette can hit the monitor and cause glare that way. Instead of the accurate color pic on your monitor, you'll get a milky, hazy version instead and it will show up in your painting as milky. To solve that, I make a flat cardboard "roof" for the top of my monitor. To test, I turn the monitor off and leave the easel light on. If the screen is completely black, you're good. Wave your hand over the edge of your roof and look for shadow and light on the monitor (light will show at bottom of monitor, if so). Adjust the "roof" to block out all the overhead light. Hope that helps.

I often join friends at a local art center for open studio painting time. At the end of the session the still life is dismantled so we each take photos of it to finish at home. I like to transfer the photo to my Kindle which I set in a bracket next to my easel. (an idea I got from Michael J, Smith's videos). The nice thing about this method is that you can enlarge areas of the photo for more detail. I find this a great aid in developing my paintings.

Outside of the convenient structure, I mean. To be more specific, is there an advantage to the circle around the paint holder? Is it meant to focus the eye? Is it harder for our eye to distinguish color differences when the field of color input is broadened without such a circle? I apologize if this has been answered before.
@rachelnikiforou4639
@rachelnikiforou4639 8 жыл бұрын
I know nothing of this but it seems to me that the circle isolates the colour in a particular section in the photo/setup you wish to replicate, so it's easier for the eye to focus on that particular point without colours surrounding it affecting your interpretation of the given colour since certain colours can change the appearance of other colours when placed next to one another.

Customers who do not live near me ask me to paint portraits from photographs (pets and people). I have been struggling big time using photos as references. I first try to adjust them in photoshop (contrast and temperature) but that ends up not helping that much. I guess the only way for me to get "better" and more "efficient" at using photographs as references is to paint more from life then apply what I learn. In other words use the photograph for the drawing and blocking in steps then rely on my knowledge when it comes to colors. Would you say that is true - or is there something else you can share? Thank you big time! I find the same issues with landscapes etc.

You can even better it by having the long piece of metal holding the circle a flat metal and turn it 90° so that you would barley even see any metal holding the circle up or make it a transparent polyurethane plastic

+ANGELSLOVE Hello, Gamblin has a new varnish called Gamvar. You can get it in a gloss finish. It can be applied as soon as the painting is touch dry and the painting will continue to dry underneath. Gamsol gives uv protection as well. It isn't as hard as dammar varnish though and you have to be careful not to scrape or scratch it. I use it all the time as I need to ship my paintings within a week or two usually.

Hi Mark! The varnish i use is winsor newton oil color dammar varnish. The paint i use is Georgian oil paints which i have been using for years. I use gamblin refined linseed oil as a medium. Last week i did brush a thin layer of varnish on the top edge of an old painting which has the same varnish on it which dried quickly. The coat i put one the edge last week is still very tacky, and is not drying. The only difference is that the varnish use to come in a glass container and the new varnish comes in plastic containers. Maybe its the plastic leeching into the varnish. All the art stores around me don't have any varnishes or solvent in glass. I have never had this problem in the past using these material??? Thanks for the reply. I think you are the best out there John Hunter

It is wrong what you told about the light on the colour checker at 6:40. If you paint a picture of a lawn with shadowy and very light parts you can't have the same light on your checker as the original is - and honestly you don't want to. The light condition of your colour checker has to be the same light condition where the future picture is viewed. That is most often a medium light or shadow but almost never in bright sunlight.

Do you know how Sargent managed to work on such huge paintings? Just curious if he measured and stretched the linens/canvases in frames first and I'm assuming he leaned it on a wall to paint? What kind of an easel would've supported his typical 87 by 55 inch paintings back in the era? Can you talk a little bit about artists from his era about their preparations/methods. Did they varnish stuff or were they preserved later by curators/museums etc. thanks

Mark, I have no doubt that God blessed me with a talent for drawing and painting. However, it needs to be nourished by good teachers (like you!). Skill has to be developed. You're not born skilled. I agree that anyone can learn to draw and paint. I use to get that, "I can't even draw a stick figure." a lot too. I'd tell them I could teach them. But I could sense that the interest just wasn't there. You have to WANT to.
