Welcome to our latest video where we dive into the groundbreaking 2024 EU Speed Assistance Law, coming into effect on July 7, 2024. This new legislation aims to make speeding a thing of the past with the mandatory implementation of Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) systems in all new vehicles sold within the EU. With headlines like "Can't Speed" and "Impossible to Speed," there's a lot to unpack about how this law will change the driving experience.
What's Inside the Video?
In this video, we’ll explore:
The Basics of ISA Systems: Learn how Intelligent Speed Assistance works. From GPS and road sign recognition cameras to digital maps, discover how this tech helps vehicles adhere to speed limits.
Reality Check: Despite the sensational headlines, drivers will still have some control. We’ll discuss how drivers can ignore or turn off the ISA system, and what this means for everyday driving.
Types of Alerts: ISA systems offer various alerts to keep drivers informed without being too intrusive. We prefer the haptic feedback and dashboard warning messages for their discreet yet effective notifications. Find out why these methods are favored and how they work.
Benefits and Challenges: We’ll delve into the pros and cons of the 2024 EU Speed Assistance Law. From enhancing road safety and reducing environmental impact to potential driver acceptance issues and privacy concerns, get the full picture of this significant change.
Your Opinions Matter: What do you think about this new technology? Has it gone too far, or is it a necessary safety measure? We invite you to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section. Let’s start a conversation about the future of driving in the EU.
Why It Matters?
This legislation could transform how we drive, making roads safer and more predictable. However, it also raises questions about driver autonomy and the balance between safety and freedom. By understanding the details and implications, you’ll be better prepared for the changes ahead.
Engage with Us!
We want to hear from you! Drop your comments below and let us know:
Do you think the new EU Speed Assistance Law is a good idea?
How do you feel about the ability to turn off or ignore the ISA system?
Which type of alert would you prefer: haptic feedback or dashboard warning messages?

Thank you for watching!
One thing to bear in mind is that when your car is reading 70mph you could only be traveling at around 63 as many cars will under read the speed, and this can be upto 10% depending on your wheel dimensions and tire profile. So should you be limited to this cut down inaccurate speed or your cars true speed?

Being a driving enthusiast, THIS is why I go for older cars. From the innocuous seat belt bing bongs to lane keep assist throwing me off course changing lanes (yes I did indicate), to (in)accurately showing speed limits on the dash, to speeding warnings/slowing the car down. It almost seems inevitable that at some point slowing the car down is not just one of the mandatory options, but the ONLY mandatory option. I usually hate the slippery slope argument but I'm also not one to ignore patterns and it looks like we're already almost at the bottom of this slope. When I get a new head unit in my '09 Audi R8, I'll have all the tech the vast majority of people need, traction control, power steering, ABS and infotainment without the invasive BS that comes in new cars. And guess what, basically a supercar costs about the same as a new Toyota Corolla or Nissan Leaf. Of course with other older makes/models, prices go down from there. (Never going to happen but) we need to stop purchasing new cars and buyers need to flood the 2nd hand market en masse.

There is a good reason why the most critical infrastructure of energy, financial markets and medical networks use 30+ year old mainframe tech. Keep it simple and it`s more reliable. Newer systems with more bells and whistles are always less stable with more bugs from the complex code.

I drove a Golf in Spain a couple of years ago and it had a similar system. It seemed to read the road signs when using cruise control. Unfortunately it couldn't distinguish between the road signs on parallel roads (slip roads and roads running along side the main road I was on). It therefore cut speed unexpectedly and caused a reaction from other road users behind me who thought I was break checking them. I hope the system has been improved if it is being rolled out across Europe

I drive deliver and collect coaches and trucks for my service company and they are already fitted to them and also an automatic braking system that brakes if the vehicle thinks it’s gonna be in an accident. Last month the truck slammed the brakes on causing an accident on the M25. Due to a pigeon that had flown across the front of the truck through the vision zone of the camera and the van behind hit me right in the tailgate. Once the vans forward facing camera it looked like I’d brake checked him Once my own camera was checked and the pigeon seen and the system had braked. I was lucky enough to get told no further action would be taken against me So in my opinion all the extra 💩 there putting on vehicles should be stopped as it could lead to wrongful prosecution.

And the vehicles not doing what you want it to do. This technology can't tell the difference between you waiting at a junction and needing power as opposed to actually being in a tailback.

Both my cars have speed limiters fitted. I use the speed limiter function a lot of the time however there are issues. There are many roads where the indicated speed is actually higher than the legal limit. The A17 between Kings Lynn and Sutton Bridge is a prime example. The speed limit is 60mph with small sections where there is a junction of 50mph. When going from a 50mph to a 60mph limit the car indicates 70mph and sets the speed limiter accordingly. I have had issues when going from a 60mph to a 30mph limit especially if the 30mph speed limit is obscured by foliage or the sign is not clean and the car does not immediately apply the speed limiter. Also when entering say a 30mph speed limit and the speed limit sign is visible, the speed limiter is not applied until you get level with sign so you can easily be caught for speeding if, as in my case, the police officer is hiding on the side of the road just a few hundred metres past the speed limit sign. Looking at the dash cam footage the speed limit sign was partially obscured by foliage and the speed was reducing, but not sufficiently. The message is therefore do not rely on technology.

Have this on our new Volvo we got in April. Its as annoying as fuck. Two options, you leave it on sound mode so every time you go over 2 mph faster than limit for more than so many seconds, an annoying ping starts ( and it does this a lot as it takes in speed limit changes down side roads you pass but arent driving on) or you switch off sound permanently and the cars accelerator becomes like a sponge when you "speed" . You can push the pedal and over ride this but it tends to be clumsy and can cause issues like surging etc. The easiest method I've found is each time I get in the car, I hit the button to temp disable the alerts. They stay off until I turn off the car. Theres no way (on this vehicle) to turn off the system totally. I find it obnoxious and very clumsy and should only really be limited to Hire cars, HGVs, etc. And its an EU law.....i have to suffer all the bad shit for Brexit and still get crap like this?

As HGV driver, I can tell you that the main reasons for congestion/ confused / slow traffic are: 1. Unnecessary short or any journey 2. Auto obesity ( big vehicles for no real private reason, more to bully others and pretend to be important when in reality just taking up valuable space ) 3. Lost drivers ( private hire, not familar and not required to pass any local knowledge test or beeing familiar with car or language or basic Highway code , private hire company buying licences ) 4. Poor maintained vehicles and now also new EV'S mostly so complicated that basic defects require back up service and in meantime they hold up traffic - up to 25 diesel trucks on motorway !!😅) 5.sat nav drivers so religiously following SLOW DELAYED RELAYED SATELLITE information that they are often past that street they wanted to go and subsequently get the command " turn around "!😅 Also I see more drivers entering dualcarriage ways jnto oncoming traffic as they lost orientation. I see basically a population on road which is loosing its brain functions as electronic screens are taking over , but screens and information is so slow and incorrect that we would move faster, safer, more accurate and efficient / eco friendly if we would use own eletricity inside our own brain, which only needs HYDRATION, DEXTROSE AND OXYGEN😅. 😂

It's a good idea when travelling in a 20,or 30 limit, because let's face it, it's very easy to exceed these, however when overtaking on shall I say a rural road, to get past a very slow nervous driver, or lorry etc etc, if the limiter was unable to be bypassed, suddenly being restricted in speed could prove to be the last overtake you do. It's I think a real problem when in the future we can't bypass the limiter.

Have you seen the state of some road signs and furniture many are dilapidated or covered by foliage so reliability is an issue, it’s not just advisory it’s full telemetry all inputs and data is captured and managed by a contractor commercial company who can supply that data to the relevant authorities for whatever action they deem to take. The next step is you insert an ID into the vehicle to enable it and log you in so you’ll be tracked and charged for road usage, think it’s all about safety it’s not believe me I know it’s already being used in certain locations in the commercial sector including access to onboard cameras internal and external this is just the beginning.

2024 Audi A3, about a month old. It's really not that accurate, regularly tells me I'm in a 20, when its 30. On the M1 it seems to have old data for 50mph road work sections, I rather foolishly linked the adaptive cruise control to the speed recognition when I first drove the car so had unexpected rapidly deceleration from 70 to 50. Luckily no one too close. Also find it ok reading speed signs off of gantries, but not the nation speed limit applies when the reduced speed ends. If it worked great, I'm happy to stick the speed limit give or take a few mph. Instead I have car rage at my own car at the annoying beeps etc. and its a pain to turn off every time I start the engine. Add to that the tugging at the steering wheel from the lane departure assist every time I avoid a pot hole, or drive on a narrow a road. I'm missing my old dumb car that didn't assist me. I want to get in the car and drive, not spend 30s waiting for it to log me in, then going through touch screen menus to turn stuff off.

I drive a new Volvo xc40 and the speed recognition is pants. I can be driving on a 60mph road and suddenly the car bings to alert me that I’m breaking the 30mph speed limit that doesn’t exist. Annoyed doesn’t even start to cover it!!

Does this mean that speedoes will be super accurate?

Nope. But the actual vehicle speed as a variable would be quite accurate. The speedometer will probably still have a slight difference. It’s the law.

If it uses GPS to find the speed limit, maybe it also uses GPS to calculate whether that is being exceeded? I'd hope so, because most speedometers over read by 5-8%.

The current technology to decide what the speed limit for any given stretch of road should be, is next to useless. I have a new Toyota, with the latest software version, that scans for speed limit road signs with an array of front facing cameras. If I had a penny for every time it gets it wrong, I'd be a rich man by now. I could be stuck doing 50mph after driving through roadworks on a motorway, because my car doesn't know the limit is back to 70. The opposite is true for when I leave a motorway. I could be driving down a 30mph road while the car thinks it still ok to do 70. This legislation sounds kind of ok in principle, but in practice it's a disaster.

@johnlightfoot9967 2 ай бұрын
In the future the devices will pick up on road works and accident and will be updated from afar, then you will get areas that you can not possibly go over a certain limit, then the fun begins when hackers get in and turn the motorways into 5mph mandatory areas. Put something online, hackers will be working on it.

Optional for now, until it gets established and then you won't be able to disable it. Down right dangerous when your overtaking someone and they speed up a bit, forcing you to go slightly over the limit, and then it kicks in when your side by side. Voted brexit and what a waste of time that was.

Quite simple, I'll never buy such a car. As for the noise made when seat belts are not secured, I managed to turn that off through via OBD2. A tip for anyone else is either plug the belt in before you sit down, or grab a seat belt buckle from Ebay to fool it.

This entitlement around cars is absurd. How does someone who gets into car suddenly acquires rights to drive at speeds you can’t do when walking, acquires an increase in volume size, that makes a giant of a person. Traffic, in particular personal transport is making our lives a living hell. The noise, nuisance, hazard to life and limb, the destruction of our built and natural environment has been a catastrophe.

That's the plan of these governments. Ruin the new cars which will increase competition for used (but still relatively new) cars leading to the average person finding it difficult to be on the road. They've already covered off the old old cars by introducing ULEZ and other emission based charges.

Just come up on the home screen. Answer to question asked. Our BYD Dolphin (electric) has systems, can read the signs. Bings and bongs. Can set speed it moans at at 70mph. A touch more than 70. 20 or 30. other speeds does a bit over then bongs. Does 20mph nag when in a 30. not 100% correct as said. Road not many minutes for home, 30mph residential. gets wrong. Not a problem. Software update. It had a few using it's built in 4G data could add but guess new cars, January ones it wont get as too old. Driver systems can be turned off but as you say, come back on. I don't bother. The odd bing and bong or pulling at the wheel the car does every now and then. lane departure, not to bad, things we all get used to when new car does. A bit odd at the time but now 6 months on. not too bothered

Mazda cars miss read road signs all the time taking speed limits from side roads and somehow eu think it's ready to enforce 😂
Ай бұрын
First of all, it's not a limiter. It's a speeding warning. Limiter is actively limiting power to the engine to keep the car at the speed limit. The chime just annoys you when you think going 10-15% over the actual limit is needed for traffic safety reasons, or when you think accelerating to 80kmh from a standstill in a city is acceptable. There's a lot of people who pride themselves on having a steady gas foot, claiming therefore that adaptive cruise control is unnecessary. What they fail to see is that adaptive cruise squeezes extra 10-15% fuel efficiency because it tracks the ECU mapping much more carefully and can pick a perfect amount of air and fuel to happily cruise along. That's not to mention that with a free foot and relaxed hands, driver's mental stack is less saturated, allowing him to look further, plan earlier, react sooner. Speedo is always a bit over true speed, but it's really not an issue if your approach to driving includes planning your trip. There's a proverb in Russian, "one who rides quieter, gets farther", and it applies wonderfully to motor vehicles. Just let the cruise control do its thing, and be ready to step in and override it when it fails or your maneuver requires manual action. 1 in 25 road signs for now are misreported by ACC, oh well, use the buttons to adjust it, dismiss the chime.

These assists cause as many accidents as they save you from. Plenty of cases where for example a car changes lanes cuts in front of you and the computer suddenly thinks there's an obstacle in front and slams the brakes, causing it to get rear-ended. They should be optional.
