I usually butt the two pieces of veneer together and with a jig that is 100mm longer than the piece, screw down the jig on both sides the width of a router bed and run a sharp 6mm cutter down the centre of the pieces. That way if any deviations happen in the router pass they will both match, it works beautifully in veneer and in formica laminates, which show imperfections much worse than veneers, ive made joints almost completely disappear this way.

Thank you for the great videos. Your attention to detail and thorough documentation is very much appreciated. As to cutting veneer, a proper veneer saw works wonders. They can be found for $20-$30.

Thanks, I appreciate the comment. Will take a look for a veneer saw. I don’t do much work with veneers but it not expensive then may be well worth it.

Hi George I only discovered your channel recently but have enjoyed the refit of Lottie very much, I live in Tasmania the most southerly state of Australia and have one of those more modern plastic boats from France, which I have modified lots of time to fit our needs. It’s nice to see a good craftsman who obviously loves what he does.

Ive never tried glueing veneer with epoxy, i use a spray evo type contact adhesive, epoxy has gotta be more waterproof though

Hi George, I would use a tracksaw , you can clamp the track with a sacrificial board underneath. Cutting vaneer like that is a nightmare
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
Thanks, maybe a good option.

I'm still watching. And, I felt like I was watching myself! You are using the same clamps and T square I used just last month on a recent build. Oh yeah, we also have the same name! Go figure...

if you use traditional hot rabbit skin glue then splits in the veneer do not matter and can be repaired easily. Not waterproof though...

Check your supplier for paperback veneer the sheets are usually larger and easier to work.

Definitely, think the stuff I used a little while back had a backing of some sort that make it far less fragile.

George, that is a very smart looking heads! Fantastic work as usual. Can you post some more details on the white sheets you used? Type, thickness where you purchased etc. Thanks!
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
It’s 2.5mm thick and that was the thinnest option. May be best that you have a conversation with or visit your local industrial and decorative plastics supplier to see what they can offer.

Hi Beautiful head When you glued the fineer did you wet the fineer as well with epoxy or only the wall?
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
I found it was better to apply to both the bulkhead and the veneer as only apply to one surface resulted in the veneer absorbing all the adhesive then there not being quite enough to bond it well.
@briandbird6339 Жыл бұрын
Like the veneer solution, had my doubts but it seemed to work well. Did you use a fast cure resin, or anything special? I have used waterproof PVA, accelerated with a warm domestic flat iron, for the saloon table but you do need a bit of patience. 👍
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
It was a fast hardner with the epoxy and a pretty warm day so didn’t have a lot of working time.

Apologize for my OCD, but I would have minded the orientation of the grains of the vaneer. The aft bulkhead has the grain pointing upward (^) and the forward one, downward 😬🙃🤷♂️
