for the lighting of you in this video I like your original lighting.
@WorkshopAddict4 жыл бұрын
While editing, I seen that and agree with you that the video shows the deformable as better light. But that is not the case as the camera adjusted the ISO due to how bright the new lights are and make it seem darker near the floor. Not the case in the real world.

There are also corn cob lights with LEDs on the bottom as well to light up directly under it. I have them in my garage and they work great.

That would be awesome, but I fear it would inhibit the cooling. These have vents on the bottom and top.

Great channel... Maybe you can help with my LED/Garage opener quandary: I replaced six standard incandescent bulbs in the ceiling fixtures of my garage with winged, adjustable LEDs (no bulbs in openers). What a difference in illumination over the previous incandescent bulbs. However, when the lights are turned on the LiftMaster openers will not operate with a remote (inside or outside, all LiftMaster remotes AND vehicle programmed). The openers operate perfectly if the lights are off. I have insulated the antenna wires and electrical cords with Ferrite Core and extended the antenna wires through the garage wall to the exterior with no change. The only way to open the garage doors with remotes is to be sure the lights are turned off. Most manufacturers of the adjustable, winged LED bulbs advertise their use in a garage but, I have not come across others with this problem.

The lights you have are interfering with your garage door signal. The older ones were poor and would do that, but anymore we rarely see it.

I have a 3 car garage that I do some basic mechanic work and also some light woodworking. Right now in the middle of the garage there is a row of 3 lights spaced out and that's it. The walls are painted dark as well which doesn't help and right now I have to open the garage just to get good light. Any recommendations for my scenario?
@WorkshopAddict4 жыл бұрын
Wow. That's bad. I would recommend you add more outlets, but if you cannot, they make E26 strip lighting that would allow you to take light to the other side of the garage by connecting the strips.

I just use a 3-socket splitter from a single e26 socket and use three 10w white light LED bulbs. It spreads out the light pretty evenly while keeping it really bright.

I fortunately painted my single car cinder block wall garage white inside a few years ago including the ceiling below the joists so 3 standard 9watt LED bulbs seem to light it up plenty bright enough for me. That being said, on one side of the garage I have workbenches lining the whole length of wall and have 3 sets of old fashioned 4ft florescent shop lights above the benches as well, one old enough to still be ballast driven. When they eventually wear out should I convert those from the standard T12 40w "bulbs" to LED or is it worth the bother? They seem to give off plenty of light just the way they are.

I stayed away from those in this situation because these have cooling that goes from the bottom to the top. These are not expensive, so the hope is that they might last longer.

The cob lights are twice the output of the deformables which can be used folded up like the cob lights or different leaves on different angles and the better metal ones can dissipate heat better. Complicated but with a low ceiling use strip lights or lights with diffusers.

Thank you for making this video. I currently have two deformables in my 2 car garage. At first i was happy with them but after moving equipment and tool boxes etc in i got a alot of shadows. So I went ahead and ordered one of the cobb lights in the video to try out. I think its gonna work great after seeing your review. 👍👍👍

Painting inside walls in white or a light colour will also massively improve visibility in a workshop. Reflected light from the huge while surfaces(walls/roof) will fill in shadows as well.
@btrswt354 жыл бұрын
My go to right now are ballast bypass, direct wire led tubes. The single biggest problem I have with these kinds of bulbs is if the driver goes out, the whole light is probably garbage (I'll be honest and say I'm not sure if the driver is replaceable or not). For $30-$40 I a cheap shop light could be bought along with a couple direct wire LEDs. With a little time it can be rewired and the troffer offers a longer, reflective surface to direct the light down. If one of the bulbs go out, it's as easy as twist one out and twist one in for less than $10-$15.
@WorkshopAddict4 жыл бұрын
I will be going this way in my main shop when my bulbs start to burn out. I am also going to add some more direction deformables around the lift.
@jamesm5682 жыл бұрын
If you want the entire shop lit up then the corn lights are your best bet. Now if you need a concentration of light in a certain area then you move to an adjustable type of light.

I ordered similar 200 watt deformable LEDs for my garage and with a kill-a-watt they measured 65 watts! I returned them and went with 5 100 watt LED corn lights that measure 95 watts each with the kill-a-watt and produce 15000 lumens (TSEXES on Amazon). I added 10.5 inch aluminum reflectors dis-assembled from "brooder lights" available at Home Depot to help direct the light.

Can you plug each of these into a kill-a-watt and see what their actual wattage is and how it compares to advertised. If you can do that on future vids it would be great. I have found, for example, a "300w 30,000 lumen" spot light I purchased from amazon only drew 108 watts.

CAUTION when installing these corn lights in your garage over a vehicle. I installed my corn light in my garage a few years ago when I owned an older white vehicle, everything was fine, then recently when I bought a brand new dark burgundy colored car I could not figure out where tiny drops of "white varnish like specks " that were dripping down on my car were coming from. Many days I would turn on my other regular bulb ceiling light when going into the garage and many days I would turn on the corn light, not realizing at first that the use of the corn light coincided with seeing little white specs on my car. One day it dawned on me that it might be the corn light so I only used the regular bulb light with no white specs on my new car. I then goggled info on these corn lights and found out that many use a fluid in them to keep the LEDs cool , and sometimes they will leak the fluid out.

I have six ballast style 40" fluorescent fixtures in my garage with LED's. It's bright, and I hate it. I much prefer soft incandescent, but I'd need about 24 of them and it'd get rather hot. I have 36 recessed lighting fixtures in the basement...now I need to install a second air conditioner. I hate LED's (they don't dim well) and I HATE fluorescent lighting.

I can't help think that if the ceiling had wallboard, or even just a piece of wallboard around the base, that even more light would reflect down to the work areas. And read better on your meter.
@WorkshopAddict4 жыл бұрын
You are right. I said it in the video also. Even painted walls would have helped. It is hard to show how much more light and how much more comfortable it is to be in there now without being under the spot light.

These both seem like outdated technology. For that large of a space you should use a highbay led fixture. Hyperikon make cheap UFO style that would fit the space and light the area much better. Plus with led chip technology that last for a lot more years.
