@JunkieXL Great stuff here Tom. I am a recent convert from Digital Performer to Cubase Pro 10. And my utility tracks look much like yours. The addition of the 4-mix and the 2-mix tracks are great for summing. I'd like to see how you are routing midi and audio channels to both of those tracks. So when you hit record they are feeding into the 4-mix and the 2-mix tracks. Hope you cover that soon too. Nice to get film scoring tutorials for Cubase.

This arranger track programming certainly is similar to session view in Ableton. Which I’m sure I’m not the only one who uses that for creating foundations for cues. Once again Thank you for this great insight.

Good to see more people doing tutorials - so sharing the word is always positive despite the critics on here! However, did anyone else notice there was a lot of latency in this setup? The delay from key-stroke to sound would be distracting for me personally.

Arranger track is kind of a cool feature that I see can also be used for more minimalist type writing techniques. You can compose the program little motifs (riffs) and then make them playback in any order or on top of each other. Kind of cool really. Sure beats snip, copy and pasting.

Tom, regarding the arranger track, it would be very helpful to see how you might handle situations where there is a 'lead in' to a particular section, like a riser, where if you change the order in which sections play then that riser might not fit so well. Thanks!

Funny that Studio Vision Pro had this same exact feature as the blocks and arranger that you demo here back in the 1990’s. Nested subsequences I believe it was called. Nice that Cubase is updating it 20 years later.
@OneShortMoment
@OneShortMoment 5 жыл бұрын
petercalandra Well, not really... Just as Tom said in the video, the arranger track has been around forever. It was previously called „play order track“ and was introduced with Cubase SX3, in 2004. So, depending on when exactly in the 90ies you saw that feature, we‘re talking more like 10 years, likely much less.

@@chunkystylemusic i think it may have been a tax write off. When they transferred all the offices and files etc from the Bay Area to Tennessee, they even claim to have lost the code to the software. Gibson did similar things to other brands they bought, see Oberheim....

The arranger track is so powerful , Steinberg should make it possible to trigger the parts on the fly with your midi or computer keyboard like in Opcode's studio Vision . In that way you could remix on the fly and record it at the same time .It's possible to play arranger parts on the fly with the mouse on the screen in Cubase / Nuendo but that's not so handy and can not be recorded so you are forced to program the order witch is less intuitive and takes a lot more time.
@udderhippo

As soon as you started explaining about the arranger track I thought: "This would save a lot of time conforming a score and cues to picture during the final minutia of the video editing process." Notes Productions, good question... I can of course only guess why Tom didn’t use the chord track, but I assume it’s one or more of the following: 1. historical reasons - i.e. he might just not be acquainted with it yet / enough. (The chord track is not really new, but it is certainly newer than e.g. the arranger track) 2. „cosmetic reasons“ / a matter of taste - While the display of the chord track is somewhat flexible and configurable, it is not as flexible as a marker track (which can essentially hold any random combination of letters and numbers for a marker name.) So, if he has a very specific (and not really „standard“) preference for the naming of his chords and/or the way they are displayed, it might be reason enough to not use the chord track 3. „Safety reasons“ / workflow - Now, that might sound a bit far-fetched, but like every other feature in Cubase that does something potentially intelligent „on its own“, the chord track MIGHT have some irritating side-effects at times. (Example: I love it and use it all the time, but still I sometimes have moments where I go „WTF? Why is there a piano playing at that moment? There shouldn’t be! ... Oh , I forgot to mute the chord track.“ 🤦‍♂️ Essentially, a similar effect as in this video when Tom was surprised for a moment why the playback wasn’t starting at the point in time he clicked at... because he forgot he had the arrangement track active. 😉 (So, if you want to avoid something like this at all costs... don’t use the feature.)

My first option was Logic X (Cheaper, Apple, friendly (!?)...). Well as I progressed I kept bumping into Cubase, and I was quite intimidated by its interface and all... I download the 30 day free trial and the first thing I noticed: "It sounds better" but then I got really lost and almost gave up. Now after watching a few tutorials and specially how a PRO like YOU work its nuances, well I think I'll have to spend € 559.....😬

I own CubaseArtist & Cubase Al 9.5. Bored with this USB eLicenser that recently broke after 8years of use and killing an USB port on my Laptop + the heavy&long recuperation process of my licenses@Steinberg. I just have baught a FL Studio20 Signature as alternative DAW...all what I did with Cubase I can easily redo till now + can use Retrologue & PadshopPro + free lifetime updates vs non friendly updates policy for Cubase... Well the important is to stick with a whatever DAW allowing you to do what you need to, in a workflow you're familiar with, and which doesn't cost you too much to professionaly produce your music ! Does it make sens ?

Dear Tom, many thanks ! I've tested it, but I still don't really get the use of Arranger track when using in film scoring. If video playing is not kept linear -ie: it also jumps from one Arranger section to another as I am re-ordering the Parts ( for example: B ->D -> E -> A ) - how could we check if the new arrange works with the picture ? Also how do you deal with Audio clicks, fade in/ Out tails, etc. when cutting and moving the sections to different positions in a new Arrangement order? thanks for the reply !

It's really not about the DAW you use. Brian Tyler writes, mocks up in Pro Tools. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqDKeYJ_mc-YnMU states that at 2:00. I believe in the end you have to deliver in Pro Tools sessions. Cubase and Logic are awesome for composing their feature sets really help that position. I think Tom mentioned delivering in Pro Tools to the sound editors in past Studio Time episodes.
