No, not really. A cyclist is not a car. As a cyclist I love freedom, independence and taking the fastest route: why would I be bothered with going around a stupid roundabout instead of taking the fastest way: shortcutting it. This is a great example of implementing 'car-oriented-solutions' on cyclists... Only nice thing is that it takes down speed, therefore it's even better to see that people cross it on both sides when there is no opposing traffic. Nobody wants to stop pedalling when cycling on a slope. It's more of an inconvenient obstacle, in my opinion.
@Cl0ckcl0ck3 жыл бұрын
@@mwarnas The time was wasted. The money mostly just got pumped around in the Dutch economy. It only cost us the imported stuff, a few tons of iron and concrete and some hours from workers from our fellow EU countries (that we want to help develop anyway). It was worth every bit of effort. Just the kids now being allowed to cycle to attraction park Drievliet will be worth it in economic growth.

One thing the Dutch do best is design. The country is clean, tidy and beautiful. It surprises me neighbouring countries like Germany and Belgium are not copying from the Dutch so they could make things better. One would have thought it would have been easier for states like NRW just across the border in Germany would have the same infrastructure.

This video is a beautiful showcase of a delicate mix of stakes and values that are carefully defined and organized by formidable designers that know what’s up, and came up with this gem. It’s got it ALL: Focus on safety (value) defines the problem and shapes the solution. I view this bridge elegant, stylish, innovative (bicycle roundabout anyone?) effective (although that’s a somewhat speculative statement). It’s got art WHICH IS ALSO FUNCTIONAL by the way, it’s self-sustaining, it encourages fitness and prevents pollution. The Dutch are light years ahead (excuse the pun) compared with us in the UK. I can't even imagine a cycle bridge this advanced being built in the UK.......maybe in 15 years from now, but both local and national government will always have excuses as to why they don't have the money to build such bridges. The 'will' from those in positions of power (whether at local level or nationally) just isn't there. The Dutch decided man many years ago that they would take a responsible, grown up attitudes towards cycling, and those who cycle, and invest in a proper cycle infrastructure. Years later they are reaping the benefits many times over. Us meanwhile (in the UK) can only dream about things like this bridge....or those 'elevated cycle only roundabouts'. Eventually they may appear in the UK, but we're talking many years away here - not something which I cans see happening within the next five years. Sad, but the UK still doesn't take cycling or cyclists seriously enough. I'm not being pessimistic here, just realistic. But I know that attitudes towards cyclists will be alot more like those of the Dutch, eventually. Even if it takes another 20 years.

@GreenJimll3 жыл бұрын
Nice looking bridge, but 12million Euros? Blimey! The chance of us getting such segregated cycling infrastructure over here in the UK is going to be pretty slim (certainly outside London). A railway preservation group I've been involved with for years got a new railway bridge built over the existing Midland Mainline in the UK and that cost less than £3m. A rail over rail bridge would need to be considerably stronger (and thus more expensive) than a bike/foot over road bridge I would have thought. So I'm rather surprised at the high price tag, unless it had to include land purchase for the approach routes too.
@cliostronk26673 жыл бұрын
There can be many reasons to explain the difference, first one that comes to mind is size. This bridge has to cross 16 (!) highway lanes. The bridge is 335 m long and 3,5 m wide. That would make the cost a little over €10 000/m2 (slightly less, because there are also costs for linking the bridge with existing infrastructure). What would the cost per m2 be for this railroadbridge?

So there's a separated bicycle path 350 meters further away and they have built a bicycle bridge costing 12 millions euro. Hello Belgian government, take a look at our neighbours please

The path that's there is very bad. This bridge is a monument of joy. You replace 2000 moments of darkness and despair with 2000 moments of pure freedom every day. How is that not worth €1000,- any day? Cyclist going to and from The Hague centre replace 3 km of their daily commute with nature. We're all in it together you know. The fog/dew/mist/rijp/etc on the fields in early winter will make loads of people very happy.

16 LANES on the A4 motorway! It's weird how the Netherlands are so good in building great cycling infrastructure and have traffic calming and car free zones Everywhere, but then go on and build even more overkill highways than Germany does.

I feel this video is misinformed on two counts. Firstly, I feel this bridge is not the last missing link in this particular route as just at the Voorburg end of this bridge you have to make an awkward crossing of a road and then a small bridge across the Vliet into a park in Voorburg. This little bridge can only be crossed walking as the incline is way too steep to cycle and in the park you share the road with pedestrians and a bit further the road is not a bike road yet. So Den Haag and Rijswijk have done their parts on the route and Voorburg still needs to do a lot. Secondly, I think the reason of why the fences are that high has much to do with a bike bridge just a few kilometers SW. Quite some years ago some wanker dropped a street tile from that bridge onto a car passing below killing the girl driving that car. Ever since than the region is particularly cautious with cycle / pedestrian bridges across the highway.

In the video it is mentioned that the bridge is 335 m long and 3,5 meters wide. With just those dimensions it would be a little over €10 000 per m2. I would say that given the complexity of the construction, that is a very reasonable price. But it was more than just the bridge, as you can see the roundabout and they had to connect the bridge to existing infrastructure. So I would guess that just the bridge was €8 000 - €9 000 per m2. A bridge over a small canal would cost up to €3 000 per m2, so I don't think that the costs are very excessive. The contractor made a press release when the viaduct was opened ( www.duravermeer.nl/nieuws/jan-linzelviaduct-officieel-geopend). At the bottom you can see a video of the placement of part of the bridge over the 16 lane highway.
@Cl0ckcl0ck3 жыл бұрын
It is made of taxes and those taxes will be new taxes very fast. The workers pay taxes and the stuff they buy with the money they made building the bridge is taxed too, the companies pay taxes and the steel and concrete that's imported for the bridge is import taxed if it is from outside the EU. This bridge might have 'cost' the Hague €12 million but the Dutch taxpayer didn't lose €12 million to get it. In times of economic slowdown governments that have resources left to invest in infrastructure are able to breathe life into that economy. This is money well 'spend'. And we have another nice bridge.
@Malvictis3 жыл бұрын
@Veneil Asking questions is now considered trolling? But, to answer *your* question, Cristian's point - obvious to anyone above the age of 12 - is that the bridge's cost is too high. Do you get it now?
@Cl0ckcl0ck3 жыл бұрын
@@Malvictis How is the cost too high? It will shave off about 5-10 minutes from the travel time between Ypenburg and the Hague centre at the 'cost' of about €1 each time (30 years with about 1000 people using the bridge/day which is far too low). That's €6-12 an hour for people cycling this route in pure time saved. €12 million isn't too much at all. It will make that much back in time saved for the Dutch taxpayer probably in the first 5 years already. And never mind the time saved for moms/dads who no longer have to bring their kids to school because there is now a very save connection between Ypenburg and Voorburg/Rijswijk/Den Haag.
@markovermeer13943 жыл бұрын
@@Cl0ckcl0ck You are right that public expenses do support businesses which is good for the State again (Boris Johnson slogan "Build build build" plays that card) but there is a better argument: by shaving off minutes of bike time, you get more people on the bike: less cars are lower need for public transport. Those are both far more costly alternatives.
