Last Friday, you guys came along with me as I visited the Daytona Reptile Breeders' Expo to pick out my dart frogs and see all the other great reptiles and amphibians on display. I got a group of four 2-3 month old Dendrobates tinctorius patricia. I've been wanting these frogs since 2011, so this is an exciting day! When tinctorius are little they do great in groups, but once they reach sexual maturity around 10-12 months of age, females become very aggressive with one-another and they do best in single male/female pairings after that. They're too small to be sexed now, but with a group of four frogs, I have an 88% chance of getting a male/female pair. Once I'm able to sex them and tell what I have, I'll probably either separate the frogs or rehome some of them as needed so that I have a male/female pair living together.
Watch as I add the new dart frogs to their temporary quarantine tank and talk to you about these great little frogs and how to set up a proper habitat for them. Let me know in the comments down below what you'd like to learn about dart frogs in the future so I can plan out some more videos about these guys. :)

Hello Jennie, at 58 yrs old, I found a love of reptiles. I love fish too, basically all animals. I can't have everything so I enjoy my love of fish and little frogs by your videos. They are wonderful. These little ones are adorable. Thanks for getting them so people like me can enjoy what isn't possible to have our own. God's blessings to you and yours, Lin

I dont keep dart frogs but this is what I read "they're not poisonous...at least not in captivity. Scientists are fairly certain that a component of the dart frogs diet in the wild is what enables the frogs to be poisonous since captive bred animals never develop toxicity. Additionally, wild caught animals will lose their toxicity after some time in captivity."

Usually I'm terrified of frogs and toads but these guys are pretty cute!

Can you tell me why? I'm not being hateful. I'm just curious how anyone could be afraid of these tiny squishy little critters. Is it the jumping?
@mcalero8432
@mcalero8432 6 жыл бұрын
Hecaté Jerrett-Cooper I honestly don't know why, I just always have. I'd say the best way to describe it is like how a lot of people are DEATHLY afraid of spiders and snakes for seemingly no reason, only with me it's frogs. My sister's the same so maybe it's something genetic, if that's even possible.
@GrimFelArt
@GrimFelArt 6 жыл бұрын
Matthew Calero Well if you like them and want to not be afraid of them, you can do it! :) I used to be petrified of spiders to the point where even a photo of one would send me into a panic, but now I'm planning to get a pet tarantula hahaha Frogs are great, I love their cute li'l feeties and the noises they make
@mcalero8432

Hecaté Jerrett-Cooper haha how you used to feel about spiders is exactly how I am with frogs. I'm not gonna lie watching this video did make me want some poison dart frogs of my own but truth be told poison dart frogs have always kind of been the exception to my fear so I don't think owning them would really cure it. I have been in situations where I've had to be around frogs but I've still never changed. At any rate I don't really have the means to own any right now, but maybe someday~

Well maybe you just have a phobia, that is kinda genetic and hard to get over ( and how I said genetic when you are like really afraid of something it can be like a print on your DNA i guess and passed on, that's how people usually fear heights and similar things haha )

boop da snoot don't worry, they won't actually be poisonous anymore, captive bred frogs don't have any and their diet you feed them makes them lose their toxicity, if you're scared get a leaf frog, they bite tho

For the pothos cuttings you could use those little plastic things that are often used in bouquets to hold the stem in water so the flowers don't get wilted . they have a rubber top with a hole for the stem and don't leak , they're not very big but you could just re fill them with water every day or two and then you wouldn't have to throw out the cuttings because they'll grow roots in the water .

Hi Jennie! :) Your new dart frogs are so beautiful and cute :3 Just one question. Are you planning on getting some mourning geckos too? I heard that lots of people are keeping them together with dart frogs. Thank you for answering and keep up the good work😊

Regardless of what some people do, it's not a good idea to keep different reptile/amphibian species together.

Snake Charms Yeah, but that pairing (dart frog and mourning gecko) are very common and lot of amphibian and reptile keeeper says that these animals are getting along well together. But everyone has a different opinion😁

Helpful tip. Put the vitamins/calcium powder in the cup before you dump the fruit flies in. Although they don't have wings they still crawl very fast and easier to deal with when the powder is already in there. We make new fruit fly cultures every 2 weeks to make sure they stay healthy and don't mutate back to wings.
