WE ARE BUILDING A NEW BEACH HOME HERE IN CATEEL DAVAO ORIENTAL...
Single engineer and married engineer have been really amazing in helping our projects come together here along the coast. On this Philippines land building day, we get up to date with the new beach home. It may look a little cluttered right now, but everything will clear up... especially when we move the solar onto the roof! Yup, the solar panels will be heading up on top of the new beach house. And then we have lots of really nice plans for the land.
Building a life in Davao has been a wonderful experience. And so it continues... One day at a time. Oh, and one moment of advice from the amazing Mama Rose!! So wonderful chatting with her. The best neighbor!

My concern is putting the solar panels on top of nipa. We all know nipa eventually degrades when exposed to weather elements. When you put solar panels on top of it, magnifies the heat ( fire hazard) even more thus degrading the nipa even faster. Then you have to replace it (nipa) again. That means you have to remove the solar panels (again) so as to work on new nipa.

I don't know about having nipa on the roof under the solar panels. You also have wooden truss framing. DC arc faults that can start house fires are something that's still an issue in robust solar systems, much more so in unregulated solar systems in the Philippines. You might want to think more about it carefully Kyle.

@@BecomingFilipino No worries Kyle. Don't get me wrong, I like what you are doing. Just want to let you know that it's a real risk. Most of the solar installers in the Philippines don't keep this in mind. And they think that putting in a GFDI solves everything, but it's more complicated than that. This is the reason why I put off my plan to put solar power in my home in Iloilo, at least for the time being. I'll be happy to know what the engineers think. Stay safe!

As an Electrical Engineer myself, I agree that Nipa under the solar panels is a fire hazard. I recommend that you seek the advise from a Registered Professional EE and Registered Safety Engineer.

I agree. I'm also concerned about the moisture and rot issue as nipa is organic matter and when there is no good ventilation, molds can occur. I think it is good to look at how solar panels are attached in straw/thatched roofs as a reference. Also, don't forget to make the roof accessible. Panels can last more than 30 years if maintained i.e., cleaned dirt, sand and salts, pref yearly, esp that u live near the coast. Goodluck!

I knew it and have no doubt that the talisay tree will survive with Madman’s green thumb. Thanks for the update with your house building. You always wanted to have a dirty kitchen before, now you’ve got one. Very nice! Our builder suggested a colorbond skillion roof with ours because we installed 22 solarpanels as well and it was easy for then to install it. I’m like Mama Rose and I do believe in destiny.
