I don't think the Missus thought this day would ever come. She let the comment go about you listening to the viewers about redecking the trailer. How many years has she been making comments about the condition of the trailer??? LOL Can't wait to see the next part! 👍👍👍
@tractorman4461Ай бұрын
Oh man, she's been trying to get me going on this thing for at least 6 or 8 years. But look how long I made it last with those old boards....now it'll last even longer!! Well, it SHOULD last for a while at least. I'm trying to lay it out where we can easily change out a damaged board in the future.

@tractorman4461Ай бұрын
It took a little time but it did come apart in the end !! THAT was the easy part. That sawmill oak that's a bit bowed or cupped is gonna take some work to lay down straight. I don't even want to think about drilling 300 holes through the channel iron crossmembers either !! Oh, there'll be some of them that line up, but not many. Have a relaxing evening mon ami.

Up here in Wi. white oak and red elm are the two most used woods for heavy duty trailer decks. Both are resistant to rot without being treated but both have their pro's and con's. Rough sawn white oak gives good traction but over time deteriorates under the weight of grousers on tracked equipment. Red elm resists breaking down under those same conditions but can be extremely slippery causing another set of problems. It's an imperfect world we live in... I was surprised that you didn't grab a chainsaw when your thin kerf blade was been pinched. Not sure I'd of used a good chain but it might of made shorter work of it. Anyway, the job is done and that's what counts.
@tractorman4461Ай бұрын
Good input on the different woods. I'd hesitate to use our local elm, but white oak should be ok as long as I keep it treated pretty good. It's not the best quality either, so I've got to use some exterior filler or epoxy on some of the bad spots. I mostly move dead tractors and vehicles with a load of logs thrown in from time to time. I'm thinking of maybe bolting some cleats on the dovetail due to snow or ice....but not for sure yet. Chainsaw would have been a good idea for sure. I didn't even think of that.

Nice job Wendell. I've got a tri axle that needs the same thing. I was hauling a big man lift for my cousin this summer and fell through it. Talk about a job. Take care.
@tractorman4461Ай бұрын
I hate it when that happens..... Those man lifts are heavy. Like a forklift, lots of weight for ballast./counterweight. Hopefully you get the chance to use dimension lumber for yours. The 6/4 sawn oak off my little mill is gonna be tough for sure. Plus my cross members are all 3'' channel iron, so redrilling is going to be a chore too.

Big job for sure, but a guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do. I still have my old Boy Scout Plumb hatchet from 55 years ago.
@tractorman4461Ай бұрын
I think the one I broke the handle out of was an old Boy Scouts hatchet. It has the U.S. stamped in it and no other ID. That Plumb I grabbed to finish up was the old style plumb whose head hexagon shape resembles the old winchester hatchets from way back. The newer Plumbs I have from the 50's and 60's all have nice round heads.

I’m getting caught up cuz I need a 44 FIX in the worst way! Funny how you get busy, sit down to relax and go to the 44 Headquarters and plum check in to dreamland while visions of JOFaeries dance in me head!! Now do keep in mind that my drippin, tippin and sippin goes on each morning directed your way! And I do hope you always remember to do the Pkeezez and Squeezen along the way as well. As for that project you’re working on? I dare say that what woolmanized wood would cost would probably be the price of the Missus’ saw! Plus, oak will last a long time and if you’re going to spray on a preservative it will be a while until it needs replaced. I once did a project when I helped replacing boards on a trailer bed and we placed the boards in the proper places and marked the holes from the bottom so we could drill the holes for the bolts. It was smaller than your trailer though. I think The Missus being foreman and creating high energy producing meals is a definite advantage! So now I’m going the put a few logs in the cook stove, stir some grub and go on to part two! I do hope you appreciate the sentence with all the wood with woulds and more wood? Anyway, onward to the duties and part two. Indeed I will be Tippin and Sippin your way as I go because it takes plenty of vitamin “J” to maintain my strength on this rainy cold night heer inna holier as I think about the work I need to do so I can get it done. So instead of buttoning these symbols created in my rusty aged synapse that crackle within, I’ll check this message cuz I wrote what I’ll be doing shortly! See how smart and snappy this is? Why this word salad could well get me a place in politics but I wouldn’t want it fer ser! Off I go! And in the words of the JOMINATOR, ILL BE BACK!

Question for ya wendell, what preservative are you planning to use? Keeping with the theme "watch the pennies and the dollars..." i apply used motor oil to mine (i did this 3 years ago), and it works out great. It's free, i have plenty of it, and chances are, I'll have more by the time i reapply in a couple of years, which its about time to put another coat on it. Funny (and painful) stories about you hurting yourself during the deconstruction phase because it sounds like what i do. Yes, it is painful, but ehhh, ya move on an keep working. I always enjoy Mrs. 44's comments. She is a wonderful woman, you should probably keep her❤. Keep up the great work and will wait patiently for the next video.
@tractorman4461Ай бұрын
Yes, she's a keeper for sure. She's been around almost forever, nearly 50 years. Dang..now I feel old. (-; My dad has soaked virtually ALL his handles, home made and store bought since he was a kid. So it's only natural to do the same with this. I did some work for a fella a few years back and he asked to borrow my smaller 12' x 96" tandem tag trailer. It was haggard and worn, but nothing as bad as this one. When he brought it back it was covered with all brand new dimension yellow pine. The first thing I did was soak it down and have twice since then. It's such a great preservative for wood products. (I almost saw stars when that hammer popped me in the knee.). LOL

Rusty washers grip better,...h'mmm well, I 'spose they do but then I'd use galvanized hardware, which will not rust and those washers grip well too,... :) Looks good so far,.. Question here Wendell, are you going to spray coat the frame, with a tin or four of rust proofing. I was thinki8ng now tat the frame is all open and easy to get at; then again, rust probably is not as much an issue for you there as it is for us here in the 'salt belt' ( thanks to our Dept. of Highways )
@tractorman4461Ай бұрын
No, no metal prep this time Reg. It does have some surface rust under the boards, but the primer is holding up good under the scratched and worn black paint. We do use chemicals down here, but I'm sure its not as harsh as you guys use up there. I also have to add I just have a bit of welding to do for adding an accessory for loading stuff but that's in the next video. And also some additions to the crossmembers because the boards all aren't going to break at the exact spot as the old material do.
