Floppy, NEVER apologize for playing the demo first! How do you know whether you'll like something unless you try a sample? And if your system is a potato like mine, demos are the only way to be sure you can actually run it. More games should put out demos, not less!

You can travel pretty far in the demo, as long as you stick to the allowed directions. It's quite a slow-paced game; a lot of it is just figuring out where to go next, since while there are some clues in the environment (one of the buildings you were in had a partial map, for instance), they're not terribly clear and wandering blindly is risky. I never did figure out how to get the compass or the other tech unlocks; I suspect you need to find specific POIs. I get that "you are lost in the desert with no idea where you are" is the game's entire premise, but I think it might be improved by even a little more guidance....
