New details are emerging about Robert Card, the suspect identified by police in the mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine. Card’s sister-in-law told NBC News the family alerted police and military officials that he was experiencing an “acute” mental health episode in the months before the massacre. What is more insane is two weeks is the norm for hospitalization of those having delusions, psychosis and hearing voices. Most cases don't even have mandatory meds or shots.

@@harley8680 I don't pay 20% of my health care costs with the VA, and those on active duty can get counseling. We even had combat stress counseling teams available that you could talk to on deployment. We definately saw mental health teams post deployment when we got back. Some guys may have waved them off with the 'no, Im fine and don't want to talk' but the option was there. Maybe you have to pay if youre not a certain disability threshold. The VA has a table that has a rank and disability rating for free healthcare. The lower the rank, the lower the percentage you need.

I love how the reporter feigns outrage over this person owning "semiautomatic weapons." Nearly all civilian firearms are semiautomatic. Semi automatic just means one trigger pull =one bullet and the weapon will reload itself between each pull. But this weasel asks the question like it's some special kind of category we need to do something about. Banning semiautomatic weapons effectively bans guns altogether. This is activism, not journalism.

Mental Health IS something THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED and seen as a part of one's healthy on a monthly to yearly basic check-up in this country and on a global scale. Also, people need to learn the signs of when someone's mental health is suffering, just like people learn and then know the signs & symptoms of a heart atack. Well I certainly can’t argue with either of your comments. Stigmas about mental health are really not helpful at all. The military seems to have a kilitary division of some sort we the Public aren’t privy to? It’s not fair to lump all vet’s together but if seems like more and more are coming out of it and they have a do or die attitude towards society in general. I’m pretty sure that’s somewhat intentional but not all vets are in that club of obviously intense grooming and brainwashing people to be your soldiers of fortune alone. Just makes it way easier when you have a recruit that already has a shaky brain for whatever reason? Unfortunately for everyone nationwide.

Keep in mind, his Army Reservist Commander sent him to the facility. It was a military decision to send him there and a military decision to let him keep his guns. The state was not involved in the decision. They sought to resolve the issue on their own and believed the situation to be resolved. People do not understand much about mental health issues. Having anxiety, depression, bi-polar condition, etc. does not automatically make somebody want to murder someone. That is a decision made by an individual who ultimately (for whatever reason) wants to. Many, many of us have mental health conditions. Some of us receive care and some of us do not. All of us aren't murderous psychopaths. It's time we put that idea to bed.

No one did anything about this guy, absolutely no one. The doctors treating him, the military, the federal background check, the family called and warned many people and still nothing. And yet they want to blame guns. Every single person who didn’t do their job is responsible for this including the mentally disturbed shooter. I bet they will pay attention to him now. What’s the point of having a background check? Really!
