thanks for sharing your day. I find it very relaxing to hear you explain what's going on, why the machine is operating a certain way, how you work. I've also subscribed to a channel called DUSTUP where a guy is trying permaculture in the Texas desert. I appreciate his efforts but his lack of any farming/equipment operation/planting knowledge is unbelievable to watch at times.

Matt We use a flap disc grinder to sharpen disc blades on our New Holland Discbine...We get a little more life out of the blades..then change them... I sure am glad we don't have gophers in our hay fields here in Wisconsin

We used to run the serrated blades on our discbine. They held up to the dirt a little better. They kinda self sharpened instead of going dull

We ended up taking the conditioner off our hydroswing. That made haying way faster. But the only thing is u have to keep ahead of the hay growth so it lays flat. Too much it bunched up, not high enough it would spread it like a lawn mower 😂

We run same setup for cutting hay… I pulled those triangle shape crop lifters off the turtles, the new ones don’t come with them anymore. be sure you run standard skidshoes, not the high crop skid shoes. That mud is a bear

Can you resharpen those blades on the header ? Enjoy your videos !!
@user-tc3ou6sy5f
@user-tc3ou6sy5f Ай бұрын
Yes.........the blades can be sharpened with a hand grinder. But often farmers dont know how... Takes about 30 seconds to sharpen one. Key is sharpening the very outer ends of the blades. Those edges wear faster......and thus need to be curves with a new curved sharp edge.

Thanks for the video Matt. The yard gophers are a problem . The field ones are harder to control. There are some old methods. 500 gallon tank of water and a stick. There is some gopher smokers giving off CO2 light the fuse put into the hole and cover them good by gophers. Can be bought from Amazon . A hose from a gas engine and a little oil in the intake smoker.. This can be made with a old small engine and a flexible exhaust pipe one like they use on a bin sweep motor. They do sell the real stiff for the intake called gopherX . Then there is I favored way it is called the gopher blast (can be seen on KZbin in action ) can be bought or made instant gopher goner. There are other things as well I know you can not use a bait because of the pack of dogs you have. These are a few non poison ways. Keep up the great video I love them.

yeah i set my header on the rear casters then tilt her back so i miss most stones but not the crop, then pick the header weight off the ground so she just dances, that way when it hits a hill it will bounce up

I find it easier to back those swathers up to have your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel - to go left, move hand left and vice versa NO! NO BADGERS! 🤣 Worse than gophers for tearing up fields regardless... have quite a few badgers around here, but the pocket gophers seem as bad as I can ever remember. I need to get to trying the Juicy Fruit method again on some fields that have gotten bad this year. I did a field a few years ago and I think it worked somewhat... the mounds didn't seem as bad the last couple years. Have been trapping a few when I can, but it does feel like a waste of time since it is never guaranteed to get them; some are smarter than others too in where they'll constantly plug their holes and fill the traps solid with dirt.

hi Matt, thanks for the content. do you have a specific time of year that works best for working the brome so that it grows back thicker next year? do you use a disk? and sounds like you do it pretty aggressively or do you think a lighter pass would work well too? any insight appreciated. thanks again
@Ranchingsodak
@Ranchingsodak Ай бұрын
Ya an old disc works great not to deep or a vertical till do it when there is still chances of rain. I also throw so seed in the fertilizer to help fill in black spots. Japanese millet works good ..grass will be back next year good luck

Isn't that a hoot you need your dirt muddy, but you don't. Hard to keep it off your equipment, but dry would be better. So, you have gofers. What's all those dogs for, do they have other jobs?

Matt you have the power to eliminate the pocket gophers, after done mowing and baling the hay have a shooting day, first prize is 40 of them wagu steaks , second place 30 ground beef patties, be a little creative man. Maybe a 2 day varmint hunt , he who has the most bodies wins.
