Wow, it baffles me how many negative comments there are about the cheerleaders. They're literally the ones being abused, yet there's so much hatred for them. Why are people always so willing to abuse and exploit women. It makes me feel so sick and disgusted to see astronomical levels of hostility towards one gender. Some of the logic in this comment section is basically, "Oh since they won't let us abuse them, why don't we get rid of them all together". How nasty of a person do you have to be in order to think like that? Ewwww, GROSS. People aught to be ashamed of themselves. P.S. That 1.25 million was nothing. Those women should have been paid so much more than that, but because who they're up against had so many resources they were able to get away with such a small sum. Ugh, just pitiful.

Sadly, this is less of an issue with sexism and more of a direct result of market forces, in particular, supply and demand. As long as there are hundreds, if not thousands of applicants applying to become a cheerleader for each team each year, then there's no economic incentive for the teams to pay the cheerleaders a fair salary. The same could be said for interns in Washington DC and NYC who pay several thousand dollars a month in rent and food just for the priviledge of working for free for a fashion house, a political organization, etc.

I’m from Dallas, and one of the biggest, if not the biggest, NFL cheerleading teams is for the Dallas Cowboys. I am a dancer, and I know many dancers that strive and audition for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders every year. They are so serious about making the team, since it is sort of a big deal in the dance world in Dallas. It’s gotten to the point where there is now a TV series about auditioning for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. It’s really just all about business, and unfortunately as you mentioned, this will continue to happen as long as there is a demand for cheerleaders and cheerleaders willing to audition.

I see a lot of comments supporting just getting rid of cheerleaders and focusing on the football. This is more than about women looking pretty, but the undervaluing of women’s athletics in general. Dance, cheerleading, and more traditional sports are quite athletic pursuits that can require a lifetime of training to be done well - it can easily match the level of time commitment to male athletes through high school and even college. The main difference is that there are very few professional opportunities for women athletes to pursue overall. These teams are able to exploit their labor because talented women are encouraged and forced into these limited opportunities. Let’s actually value this labor and not just downgrade it to women’s work. They deserve to be paid and treated well. The larger discussion is that people would prefer to see women as just beautiful and then set up structures to intentionally devalue their labor

Lord have mercy. In soccer women trya get paid like the men. Even tho they not quick n strong n had the most tv view as the men. Now the NFL cheerleader trying to get paid as nfl player. Lord why you didn’t just make us equal. Now they just sitting here complaining.

Not complaining..they are hard working and very upset.. Are you blind? Maybe if we lifted our women UP like the MEN WE SHOULD BE.. THIS WILL CHANGE.. FOR GOOD.

Clearly they are not just going to give in and give up to such suppression and discrimination and unequallity..your words are bold and very upsetting.. But people agreed with you already.. Says a lot about how humans have no care for others problems and survival.

What if the value of the service isn't worth minimum wage... I mean really... Why not just say no... this isn't a useful job and if you're paying $0 then I'm not interested.
