Milan Chheda, MD, neuro-oncologist and associate professor of medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, wants to be able to provide hope to his patients suffering from glioblastoma, the most aggressive and deadly brain tumor. Chheda is on the frontline in the battle against glioblastoma by actively leading research for new therapies and treating patients. Chheda hopes his work may lead to new and exciting therapies that target and kill treatment resistant cells.

I am lucky. I was diagnosed with GBM in November 2011. Standard treatment, regular MRI’s and I am nearing my 13 year of survival. Treated by Dr. Masciopinto in Madison. Lots of prayers.

@@curse9771 Hello. I have not modified my diet throughout this except to lose weight by counting calories . My MGMT levels are “Through the roof” according to the doctor making the temozolomide more effective. I read a study years ago where a group of juveniles were to imagine and visualize an imaginary knife and stab at their disease. I thought it couldn’t hurt so every night I imagined a baton twirling rapidly in the tumor sight beating the tumor to a pulp. And, one day very early on I met a guy in a parking lot who was interested in items was selling. He asked if I would pray with him right there. A stranger wanting to pray with me. It felt powerful. I did not change my diet to avoid sugar like some people are advocating. The liver in your body convert fat to sugar so it can be used by the cell. All of your cells can only burn sugar. Bottom line is I don’t know why I am still alive today and neither do the doctors. I thank god every day that I wake up. I hope your situation follows mine. My motto is “I have hope in the here and now, and something more than hope in the hereafter.”

I’m not sure which is more frustrating to me…. The fact that out of 36 (+/-) blood related relatives, there are over 30 various diagnoses of diseases and disorders of the brain. None of which have even been truly cured. Hell I’d be happy with partially treated-controlled. That didn’t happen either. I’ve had relatives go through trial treatment of electroshock therapy after Alzheimer’s triggered a severe depression that did not respond to any medication. I had an uncle with a ‘benign meningioma’ go through trials using the gamma knife and the medication known then as RU486. Neither of those worked. Then there was the oral medication some considered chemo therapy in the form of temodar. That was just a nightmare. But I think out of everything the experience I had personally with severe depression and suicidal ideations and attempts really opened my eyes to how little is known/understood about the brain. Then my mom received a dual pathology diagnosis of brain cancer. Oligodendroglioma and Glioblastoma Multiforme. She already had a handful of health issues. One of which was involving DVTs. So she had two incidents that led to the diagnosis. Between the two moments, I don’t think together they totaled 60 seconds. But she’d go very quiet, the color drained from her face to the point she looked gray. She then said she felt the strangest and most powerful urge to laugh in a truly maniacal manner. That petrified me. It took me 30+ years to get my southern-bell of a mom to tell someone to kiss her ass if they were being a jerk. What she explained/described was well out of anything ‘normal’ for her!! My dad and I finally bullied her into going to the ER. She fought us the entire time and finally agreed just so we would shut up! They checked the filter that had already been surgically placed in her legs. That was fine. Then they did a CT of her head. That’s where “fine” stopped. There were several “lesions”. But that hospital didn’t have the ability to truly diagnose her. She was transferred and within a week we got that dual diagnosis. It’s weird that with so many relatives with some type of brain disease/disorder, no one has ever been told “this “x” is why this happened”. Never. Not once. Worst of all we’re the people who were deemed experts at hospitals that are the top in this country who could not look my mom or dad in the face and give them an honest response in what they should expect. I understand not wanting to rob people of hope. But that crosses a line to almost become criminal when you give false hope that you know isn’t true! It caused so many issues with getting my mom proper in home care and truly caused issues when starting hospice care. My parents heard so much of the false hope, that they put off completing living wills, power of attorneys, etc. ! The doctors were well aware. They would be honest with me once my parents left the room. But they would not be as honest with them in the room. To the point I ended up recording a conversation of the doctor being “honest” with me. No family member should have to go to that level to get the truth. I’m all for nurturing hope while preparing for the worst. Especially as her primary care provider.

Sounds promising, but best case scenario a cure/highly successful treatment is still several years away. These tests take a long time, often years just to collect a data set. I hope this isn’t a dead end and that it soon at least gives people with glioblastomas a fighting chance
