NEW DS Back in Time to 1795 - Joshua and Barnabas Say Goodbye

Barnabas tells Nathan that he will die at 9 p.m. Nathan is frightened to death and tries, to no avail, to get Joshua to help him. Barnabas' promise comes true. Joshua comes to terms with all that has happened. He will adopt Daniel as his heir and he will take care of Millicent. The history of the family will read that Barnabas went to England. Barnabas and Joshua say goodbye. Joshua is unable to shoot his son with the silver bullets and asks Ben for help.

It is very satisfying seeing Forbes get his comeuppance at last. The last scene with Joshua and Barnabas is very touching and a favorite scene of mine from 1795. Louis Edmonds is s favorite of mine and it is unfortunate that his roles in the series were diminished in the last year or so.

Tomorrow is it. As I said in an earlier post, it's been quite a ride. I look forward to the next great ride that is in the present. With this 1795 storyline, the series rebooted itself, setting the tone for the rest of the series, and with Barnabas Collins as the main star for all but the last couple of months of the series. Going by what was established prior to the 1795 storyline, he went from becoming a vampire sometime during the early 1820's, and through some unknown means (perhaps making a deal with the devil to obtain his much older uncle Jeremiah Collins' wife, Josette, then instantly regretting it) to becoming one in 1795 through the curse of a witch, Angelique Bouchard, the maidservant of Barnabas' fianceé, Josette DuPrés, that he had an affair with back in Martinique. Barnabas and Jeremiah went from mortal enemies, with Jeremiah perhaps helping in Barnabas being chained into his coffin, to nephew and uncle who were only several years apart with a brotherly bond viciously broken by Angelique who wanted Barnabas for herself. Josette, daughter of sugar cane magnate, Andre, and niece of the almost snobbish Countess Nathalie, went from being the wife of Jeremiah fair and square with an unrequited love from a jealous Barnabas to Barnabas' bride-to-be, denied the chance to become his wife, thanks to Angelique making her and Jeremiah fall in love and marry through a spell, then later with her death on Widows' Hill a result of Angelique's manipulation, not because she ran from Barnabas, who wanted to steal her from Jeremiah. Speaking of Jeremiah, he went from being THE ancestor and perhaps older brother of Barnabas' father, Joshua Collins, to being the younger brother of THE ancestor, stern Joshua. Abigail went from having her own wealth and being married to a pirate to a misguided, prudish, religious spinster. Cousin Millicent Collins went from being perhaps Barnabas' older of two younger sisters and a footnote in Collins history to a naïve young woman with a very fragile mind. Sarah Collins was still the sweet, innocent girl we saw as a ghost in the present. Naomi Collins, Joshua's wife, was still Barnabas' and Sarah's sweet mother and a fierce standup woman when she needed to be, but an alcoholic due to years of neglect by her husband. Finally, Joshua went from loathing what his son had become to having his icy interior melted because of it. Add in Ben Stokes, the faithful servant who stuck by Barnabas through thick and thin, even as Barnabas threatened him numerous times, the fanatical self-styled misguided witch hunter, Reverend Trask, the scheming, manipulative gold digging Lt. Nathan Forbes, the risk-taking jailor and aspiring attorney, Peter Bradford, who was in love with Vicki, and in time, made Vicki forget about Burke Devlin, and the new heir for all future Collins families, young cousin Daniel, Millicent's little brother and you had a great storyline. Again, what a ride it was.

Without a doubt. Love Bens wicked laugh and snarly smile as he knows he isn't doing Barnabas any harm telling Forbes the only way to destroy Barnabas is to drive a wooden stake through his heart. Whoops. I almost forgot to mention one critical detail. You can only destroy him after the next sunrise and Barnabas is going to expire you at 9:00 P.M. tonight. Well Forbes. I guess this is sayonara.

Real odd that the Barmaid at The Eagle doesn't come running back out until after Barnabas leaves. For being a Vampire he is a real poet. When the Clock strikes nine, you will die. Well Nathan. Time for you to say goodnight Gracie. Your time has run out.

Also, when the barmaid runs in, she asks "What were those shots?" even though only one shot was fired. In a previous scene, the barmaid had told Forbes that she was going to go lie down after having been frightened by a bat at the window. Thus, she may have been only in her petticoat and had to slip on her dress before running out to find out what was going on. That would explain the delay.

Joshua has resigned himself to the fact that Angelique is never going to let him or anyone else try and end Barnabas' curse and is resigned to destroying him in the morning when he's in the coffin. Nathan has some balls going to Joshua for help, especially in view of his opening his big mouth about Barnabas to Naomi is what led to her suicide. Surprisingly, Joshua actually does feel a bit of sympathy for Forbes, not much, but just a little, though he does make it a point that he simply doesn't want any more bloodshed rather than any concern for Forbes himself. Forbes then appeals to Ben for help, then warns him that Ben will have Forbes' blood on his hands if he allows Barnabas to kill him. What a joke, considering that Ben wanted to kill Nathan himself for telling Naomi. Surprisingly, Ben does tell Nathan how Barnabas can be destroyed, figuring that Nathan won't have the time or the opportunity to kill Barnabas before Barnabas kills him. However, Nathan does see an opportunity with the crossbow when he makes one last appeal to Joshua. After Joshua leaves, Nathan grabs the crossbow, and prepares it, ready to destroy Barnabas. Barnabas returns to the house, walks into the room, and Nathan fires. Barnabas screams in pain, however one moment later, he pulls out the arrow, it having missed his heart just barely. Nathan pathetically keeps throwing things at Barnabas, to no avail. Barnabas kills Nathan. Yay! Nathan, along with Trask and Abigail, they all got their just desserts. Touching farewell scene between Joshua and Barnabas. Once a cold, stern and unfeeling man, you do see Joshua looking at his son with all sorts of emotions...regret, resignation, and yes, I do believe love, the affection that he could never bring himself to show before all the tragedies struck the family. Joshua cannot bring himself to destroy Barnabas, but is worried about the alternative of chaining him in the coffin forever, worried that someone might break in, open the coffin and release Barnabas. Ben assures Joshua that will never happen. Oh, Ben, if you only knew... Lots of action, and great scenes, particularly between father and son.

Barnabas will be placed in the secret room at the Mausoleum where Joshua will chain it closed. Sealing Barnabas inside until Willie Loomis opens it over 100years later. Then it’s back to 1968. Just 5 episodes left in 1795.

[ALERT! Spoilers Below] Barnabas Collins spent most of the 19th century chained in his coffin. However, when Barnabas travelled back to the past from 1969-1970 twice, he existed outside of his coffin in that century. In both cases, Barnabas used the I-Ching wands to send his mind back to the past, which then possessed his physical body in his coffin. In 1969, Barnabas used the I-Ching wands to will himself back to 1897 to discover why the ghost of Quentin Collins was haunting Collinwood, to learn of Chris Jennings' connection to Quentin, and perhaps find a cure for Jennings' lycanthropy. Since he was trapped in his coffin in that year, he had to manipulate Sandor and Magda Rakosi to release him. Once released, Barnabas again claimed to be his own descendant from England. Barnabas was released from his coffin in 1840 when Dr. Julia Hoffman travelled from 1970 to 1840 using the Stairway into Time. She hoped that her Barnabas' future consciousness had managed to possess his body when she opened his coffin. Unfortunately this had not yet happened, and he failed to recognize her. Only the intervention of the now-elderly Ben Stokes convinced Barnabas to let Julia go. Deciding to take Roxanne Drew as his vampire bride, Barnabas nearly killed Julia when she intervened to stop him. Fortunately for both of them, Barnabas' future consciousness finally possessed his body.

Jonathan Frid and Louis Edmonds were definitely on their "A" game when they were doing these latter 1795 episodes, with that farewell scene the pinnacle of their performance in this storyline. Joshua is dying by inches, unable to do anything to help his lost son, and the only thing Barnabas can look forward to is oblivion since he cannot live with what he has become.

Joshua is talking about how history and the family records. Since the history book hadn't been written yet, I'm guessing it would be in the family Bible. At least there was one in 1966-68, whatever year it was when Elizabeth was going to jump off Widows Hill to avoid the scandal involving her (late) jusband and the blackmail of Jason McGuire. Wondering who began the history album and when. Also wondering if Vicky ever gets it back from where she had Peter bury it in 1795 (in the graveyard).

Why did Ben Stokes tell Nathan how to destroy Barnabas? What if Forbes survives the night??I hope Barnabas does kill that no good creep! He did cause the death of Naomi Collins, and he was trying to have Daniel killed! When the cross bow bolt hit Barnabas, it must have hurt terribly! Poor Jonathan must have had to put up with a lot of pain from that scene! But, he sure got to wear the finest costumes, and he looked so handsome in them! Louis Edmonds acted his part as Joshua extremely well! Too bad almost all of the actors from Dark Shadows are all dead! They shall all be missed! ~Janet in Canada
