New Echo Dot 5th Gen Sound Test vs 4th Gen & 3rd Gen | Hear the difference!

Echo dot 5 now has a temperature sensor which can activate routines. Spec wise pcmag says 5th gen echo-dot upgraded the internal speaker driver to 1.73" inches from the 1.6" that was on the 3rd and 4th gen dots. The echo show 5 speaker is also 1.7" but the echo show 8 has 2 - 2" speakers (stereo)..

I have most of the Echo versions throughout the years. My two favorite are the 3rd Gen Echo Dot and the latest Echo Studio. I like the hockey puck with rounded edges shape of the 3rd Gen Dot with the light ring on top. It's much better vs. the 5th Gen round ball shape where the light ring is on bottom harder to see. Also the 3rd Gen Dot sounds about the same as my 5th Gen Dot at normal medium volume. I don't care for the silly new gesture tap feature or the eero mesh feature. I kind of think Amazon went backwards with the newer 4th/5th Gen by messing up the shape, taking away the 3.5mm audio jack, and focusing on unnecessary features.

Definitely do not agree with your assessment , I also have 3rd 4th 5th and firecube and 4th is better sound wise out of cubes , but my choice is definitely firecube hands down , 3rd you need adapter to even make it sound as near as 4th or 5th ones

The 3rd is far better than the 4th to my ears, the 5th sounds a little better than the 3rd though. The 3rd also has better microphones than the 4th, it hears me 100% of the time, although the 4th has been getting better with updates it still is worse. I'm going to wait for a sale before getting the 5th.

The song he used is called Dexter by Windshield for anyone wondering. When I first heard the song playing, I thought the voice sounded... scratchy maybe? I'm not quite sure of the correct word to use to describe it, but I listened to the song on my own and that's just how the voice sounds. I thought it was the speakers, but nope.

With Black Friday sale grab 5th I have them all I do prefer the 4th for sound over the 5th but my firecube beats them all , 3rd shouldn’t even be in the pick sound quality alone knocks it off as a comparison with 4th and 5th

I got the 5th to replace the 3rd, played them back to back, and the 5th generation sounds like it has a low pass filter at about 12khz. I can so obviously hear high hats on the 3rd generation that seem to just disappear on the 5th gen. Your test doesn't clearly demonstrate the higher frequencies. With that being said, the 5th generation does have a larger driver, so it has a little more bass, though I still prefer a clear top-end. I am disappointed with my "upgrade".

3rd get sounded too tiny and distorted to me. 5th sounded clearest and had more range. I like my current hockey puck but may get a 5th gen with LCD now.

The mic he is using is not preferred to do speaker recording it’s a vocal centric muffled mic, don’t base ur purchase on this buy it and test it with your Hearing

like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, kzbin.infoUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....

None of these products are useful if their capacity to HEAR and RESPOND correctly is not ok. I wish more reviewers examined microphone placement and sensitivity with more rigour (or at all). In homes where these are for control more than playing sounds that is THE most important factor.

The 3rd generation is MUDDY! Sometimes verbal audio can't even be distinguished, especially if near a wall or corner. I ordered a 5th gen at $24 to get clearer Alexa audio.

Jeff Bezos is rich enough already! 👎🤣 EDIT: On Black Friday I bought an Echo Dot 5th Gen for £26.99 ... Definitely better sound than 3rd Gen + lots of fancy features! At half-price, well worth swelling Jeff Bezos' bank account by £27! Your test doesn't adequately demonstrate the improved sound! As a seasoned Hi-Fi enthusiast I can confirm the sound is better, with a richer sound with deeper bass! Playing these devices at full volume results in poor sound and distortion! Just like on my expensive Hi-Fi. They're NOT going to sound good played too loud!

I find Alexa extremely useful: switching lights and TV on and off, changing TV volume and channel, free phone calls, alarms and reminders, defining and spelling words, performing calculations, speaking the indoor temperature (5th Gen), playing radio, playing music you've bought on Amazon, the list is endless! If people don't like Alexa, they're quite welcome to remain a cave-dwelling luddite! 🤣
