This is one of their most underrated songs in my opinion

This was around 1984-85 during the peak of Michael Jackson’s Thriller-mania so there were plenty of R&B singers who were sorta leaning into that high tenor voice but Michael had more grit and soul in his voice coming from the 60s and 70s with all the heavy voices of R&B and Soul like Marvin Gaye, James Brown, and Mavis Staples. Ralph was sorta marketed as the “future Michael Jackson”; in fact, New Edition was groomed to be “the next Jackson 5”. So if there was any Jackson influence at all they were encouraged to lean HEAVILY into that. Personally, I always thought that this was during that transitional period of Ralph’s voice during puberty and to me he sorta sounded like a mosquito but he eventually came into his own a few years later. The song’s cool but it wasn’t marketed at someone my age at the time, it was for 13 year girls with pink radios and teen magazine cutouts all over their bedroom walls.

If you haven't heard Ralph sing lately check out his latest single "All Mine" or Johnny Gill's single "Perfect" featuring both guys.-
