I have been following all the electric boat companies and studying all their boats, inboards and outboards. The commercial canal passenger boats can afford these drive systems bc they have income which is greatly helped by the smooth and silent running motors. Personal boats are another story. Yes they are excellent technology but still affordable only to the well healed. Batteries are expensive. Lead acid batteries have a (about) three year life cycle. Lithium is “state of the art” and expensive. The average family 22 foot speedster needs 8 lead acids (8 x $130 every three years) or two lithium’s ( 2 x $5,500 every 8 years). My numbers are estimates only. Opinions appreciated.

Your comment was from a year ago but I still agree. I've been looking into converting a jetski to electric and a 130kW DC motor with 170Nm is around 3.5k.

Great, would you please send me the specifications, mechanism operations of these kind of motors, am so interested to implement it in some cruise and boats in my African country, would appreciate your guidance and assistance. Thanks so much for your feedback.

We are thingking about building a 50 ft ocean going sailing yacht, Aluminium and to go fully electric propulsion. The boat will be build for cruising around the globe.

Rob Bosman I'm thinking of the same thing, how are your plans progressing? Ideas about motors, batteries, management systems? It seems to me that over about 40 feet your potions are limited?

Forget electric propulsion on a sea-going vessel. No way to load the batteries. Make your basic mathematics Use a diesel. Sorry.

What does "up to 2000 nm" mean? Does it fall apart after sailing for that distance?
@ShuasiBjorlen Жыл бұрын
Newton-meters are units of torque the engines can produce, nothing to do with nautical miles (assuming that is what you thought it was referencing).

hello I am thinking about converting my 28ft cabin cruiser to electric and would like to get 20mph out of it,, it now has ford 302cuid v8 motors rated at 225hp each,, the boat will run 35mph flat out on step but also guzzeling 12 gallons of fuel per hour,, do you have a rough idea of the cost for the parts and aprox run time if cruising at 12 to 15 kts,, and how many batteries,, after build is done the boat should be lighter correct,, thanks for your time and the video,, Robert

why do these cost double to triple the diesel equivalent? its one-three moving parts..
@davidrix13707 жыл бұрын
o0bananaman0o I think the cost is related to fact it is custom made.

The cost of electric drive system is cause they cause way lesser or zero maintenance to operate. That's y the price is high. Just like LED lights. U pay many more times than a flourescent or incandescent type but the range & wattage is way lower & better. Think about it, u sell good quality stuff cause it last very long & u sell it once...u only sell it one time...yup, do the math.

I don't know about electric drive motors and batteries. Both don't like moisture or water. Lithium batteries tend to catch fire when subject to water. Good Luck with battery powered marine applications
