Recently a few new locomotives have arrived on Australian soil from America. These new locomotives, the EMD Class, are very similar to the SCT & GWA classes, if not identical.
On Tuesday, the 13th of November 2018, I managed to capture 2M43N with G535 hauling two EMDs (EMD103/EMD102) & GWU008 several times between Caltowie & its destination of Spencer Junction. After 2M43N arrived, GWU008 pulled the EMDs to the Port Augusta workshops owned by Progress Rail.
These locomotives became the GWB class and now wear the old Genesee & Wyoming Australia's orange livery with Aurizon logos as of 2023. The differences compared to the older units include new inverters, different electrical equipment, slightly modified air vents, etc. a platform/walkway at the rear and a redesigned cab.
Thanks to Trainman 7 for the Information about these locomotives. His link: / @trainman758

Great video as always matt, love the area around Crystal Brook, spent many, many hours filming trains there on our way to and from Darwin, can thoroughly recommend the local caravan park there, great spot and run by the local community. Regards Bill in 3936 au.

Nice Video! Is yours the 1st to capture the (Canadian built?) GT46C-ACe GEN2? These are six Inverter instead of two, the front three are clear to see. Cheers, Tubby!

@@MS_Trains These GT46C-ACE GWB class locomotives are my favourite in the GWA fleet, their horns remind me of SAR airhorns.

@@MS_Trains the horn is higher pitch than a sar airhorn although similar to a sorta broken or cracked one like the limestone 830s kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXmZgX2Pr5pqmsU fast foward to 2:15

my keen powers of observation noticed that one of them has a dark panel or door a few metres back from the driver side cab. did they forget to paint it or what's going on?

Why tell me why you Brits and Australians cannot make a cool looking diesel locomotive you take an American locomotive and you put the ugliest cap on the front of the locomotive sorry to say why can't you keep the American Comfort Cab design or something else than is flat faced turd sandwiches of a locomotive I just don't understand why Britain and Australian diesels are so ugly Dimension Britain's air horns are repulsive and annoying sorry for the rant I just had to speak the truth on that

As an Aussie who grew up in the US and having spent half my life there thus far, I'm inclined to agree with you on that one. Bear in mind though, the Aus rail network has a smaller loading gauge which dictates a shorter height for equipment and is why locos have that squat look. The comfort cab design probably wouldn't fit nor are the crashworthy requirements as stringent, hence a simpler and presumably cheaper cab design (form < function). My biggest disappointment isn't with aesthetics as much as it is the auditory experience (or lack thereof). Our locos are practically whisper quiet and horns are hardly if ever used. I never could quite get back into rail fanning after moving back to Aus from Utah. No steep grades, dpu's, heavy coal traffic, or enough traffic in general.

Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. The north American safety cab makes all north American locos look just the same. Here you have a variety. Also the British horns are much better in my opinion. Much more soothing and what's cool is the fact that since they are equipped with two horns and not an obsolete bell, they can actually play tunes and little jingles using the horns. We might have flat faced locos but they give better aerodynamics, specially when MUed, and at the very least they don't look like they have been hit in the nose with a hammer which has caused the swelling on American locos. Se don't have steep grades or sharp turns on the main line. Why? Because the railways here were built with the utmost care and planning to ensure smooth running and not torturing a diesel engine. Oh and also, superior signalling.

You're absolutely right in that beauty does lie in the eyes of the beholder, and I respect your right to enjoy what you like. However, I think the horns on most UK locomotives sound like they were pulled off of a clown car. I also don't doubt that UK routes were beautifully engineered and thoughtfully planned, but the topography of places like Utah and Colorado present engineering challenges that do not exist in places like the UK and Australia. Steep grades and sharp curves on mainlines are sometimes a necessity regardless of how inefficient. In my opinion these inefficiencies make for more interesting railroading, at least from an observer's standpoint, not necessarily better railroading.
