The first video online of the brand new Emergency One Scorpion on loan to Greater Manchester Fire And Rescue Service for evaluation purposes. Here it is turning out of its home station using "American" rumbler siren with the second pump.

A Howler, awesome! Good to see another vehicle fitted, albeit a demo - still at no more than 10 in the UK though. Would be nice to see them introduced properly in London, where they'd be most effective. I doubt many services will actually spec their vehicles with one though to cut costs wherever possible.

Added on deep sound is called a Rumbler, it's not a hideous siren it's actually a very effective thing used to get the attention of drivers who are blasting music and have their windows up. The rumbler projects the sound of a normal siren through the frame of vehicles and makes it nearly impossible to avoid not noticing the approaching emergency vehicle. All of our Emergency vehicles here in the United States use it as an additional feature to people who don't notice them approaching from behind. With the Rumbler enabled the sirens can be heard from quite far away inside of a vehicle. It's an important part of assisting emergency services in getting to where they're going along with the use of an Opticom system.

@@elwolf8536 No, they're just different sirens for different areas. Yelp is great for built up areas due to the frequencies, so it often bounces off buildings make it very effective at junctions, meanwhile the wail is useful long distances. Src: blue light driver.

Demo vehicle so it's just showing off what's available. There's a definite need to introduce rumblers/howlers, but the price quickly adds up when a whole fleet needs to be fitted with them.

I'm curious. What makes this "scorpion" different from a regular pump? I'm from the UK and think I've seen one similar. But what's its purpose? Also why the rumbler in the siren when there is nothing wrong with the current ones.

A regular pump (Water Tender Ladder) carries 4 ladders :- 13.5m, 9m, roof ladder and triple extension. The Scorpion has hydraulically operated booms, like a hydraulic platform. It is fitted with a monitor and a spike (for penetrating a roof). It does carry a ladder, possibly around 7m fully extended. GMFRS has used wailers for around 30 years and the rumbler/howler is an interesting addition. The brigade did try fitting a bull roar horn to a couple of pumps, back in the late 90s, alongside the two tone horns and they were quite effective. However, they opted for wailers fitted retrospectively on existing appliances and on all new ones since then.

wade O'Neill...... not really the same, mate. You certainly can't climb up the boom. It's just a different way off getting water down. The boom has a huge spiked water nozzle on the end that can pierce through roofs, walls, steel containers, even aircraft fuselages, and deliver a huge amount of water through the spike thanks to its powerful pump, much more powerful than any normal pump/water tender appliance. The big benefit of these appliances is delivering water onto a large blaze, in much the same way as a turntable ladder or aerial platform, but much MUCH more water than any standard aerial, and it's all done remotely. Blackburn have a similar appliance. If you google "Blackburn Rosenbauer Stinger" you can find promo videos of it absolutely trouncing a standard ALP as a water tower. Amazing bits of kit.

The biggest ones can go out 15m and also have those Needles to pierce the outside Hull of Airplanes. Funny to see Salford station again, I dropped in there once to see about conducting my university project with their help.
