I’ve just bought my first EV here in the US, a Tesla model Y, as they have in place a very robust charging network in the US. The writing is on the wall for ICE passenger vehicles and I feel 2023 was the year that EV’s started a significant acceleration phase in the US on the S curve. Most of my buddies say I’m a fool as it will be my primary vehicle, telling me I’ll have to buy a 2nd gas powered car. I think they will be joining the party before they know it! 🤭

Your buddies have never heard of rent cars? If you want to take a long trip, which might be difficult in an EV right now, go rent a car. This is not difficult thinking, but most EV critics either don't realize it or purposefully ignore this simple fix to lack of range and lack of truly ubiquitous charging facilities.

Very professional presentation and I agree 100% with what is being done. I lived and worked in the San Joaquin Valley in the city of Fresno, California where we had , in the fall of the year, inversion layers of air bringing the pollution and keeping the pollution from automobiles near ground level. Because of my allergies, my doctors told my family we had to move closer to the coast, where the air was cleaner. 5 years ago I purchased a Tesla Model 3. Within a couple of years , I placed solar panels on the roof of my home. However, living close to the beach I discovered two roads only blocks from my house plugged in early morning traffic. Those two roads were filled with people driving their internal combustion engine vehicles which were and are bumper to bumper for hours and pollute the morning breezes coming from the ocean. In the afternoon the same bumper-to-bumper traffic pollute the air as the drivers return from work. 25 years ago, we could open the windows and breathe clean fresh air. However today, that is impossible. I applaud this president for taking action on a problem that needs strong leadership to correct. I thank you for covering this topic and not throwing Fear-Uncertainty + Doubt at this topic.❤

Few talk about this but at some point ICE (Profit) sales will get to a point where they no longer are viable (loss making) (due to lack of demand) and with no profit on EV platforms Automakers will face a catastrophic event where nothing they produce is profitable. As most manufacturers “put cars together”, from parts from other companies, these “companies” will loose all of their profit making products too. Thus, at some point they too will have a catastrophic loss of demand and therefore profit. My point is that this “point” where everything becomes catastrophic is way closer than most think. With continued massive EV adoption, the total collapse of ICE sales and the 2nd hand ICE car sales collapse plus all the new emissions standards and a sub $25k car about to be put in the market this catastrophic profit loss point will come faster than most think.

Um...not sure this is right at all. In this climate, automakers *want the mandates. It helps them with stockholders upset with slumping sales, and primes investors for further losses as they 'adapt'. (See, eg, cafe standards in late 70s/early 80s.) It also primes the pump for more government incentives. (And this much we know: the boost in corporate welfare already lining EV makers' pockets is eagerly anticipated.)

Yes you did Elon is the n record saying government grants loans .Meaning tax payers really, and space x and other secret government contracts saved him many times over from bankruptcy. He has also been able to bypass laws that demand you have dealerships and service centers not just contractors and online sales in the state to save those jobs. And also does not have to deal with a union and yes he makes cars in Christ na as well like apple and Microsoft and most car makers. This is what makes it pure gas car discrimination, by having the government, not the market, not the people pick winners and losers in the car market. Ford and others that have to sustain a dealership and service network and gas cars that get no tax credits only survive and make profits to make evs because their gas cars are paying the bills and employing workers who can still afford a new car barely. Car companies are not in business to make Tesla rich through energy credits and special preferred treatment for Tesla cars over theirs. Communist governments should butt out and let people, not them, decide on what car to buy with no carbon taxes mileage restrictions or other gas car discrimination . Unfortunately people actually believe the lie that evs will make the earth last longer and be cleaner. Anyone who knows about the mining and production waste pollution and virtually no recycling of an EV solar panels wind farms not to mention dead animals and land turned into worthless poisonous land will know this is an EV scam to destroy our grid allow big brother to step in with limits and more restrictions on our lives.

It surprises me that EV makers aren't lobbying for brake dust to be added as they should score better on that. One moment article's say EVs are flying off the shelves according to info from this company meanwhile another company will say EVs as a percentage of the US market have flat lined all year do too low demand for new EVs. Im so confused how the US government is trying to push EVs so hard but yet offer so little infrastructure for such things. Plus all the people who cannot afford these things and who cannot have a charging station outside their apartments and streets. EVs have so much unnecessary technology that will fail after 10 years and age the cars poorly. Then battery degradation is a issue as well for used car buyers.

Stricter emissions will force ICE manufacturers to also innovate on their ICE programs like Koenigsegg has done with their new TFG power train. We still need incredibly more efficient ICE engines to accompany the sustainable shift for our cars, vans, buses, trucks, etc… We need to be realistic that we simply can’t shift to 100% EV (and I love myself EV’s, just waiting on pricing to match my budget capacity to pull the trigger 😅)… we have to find a viable way to bridge the next 10-20 years needed to make the full switch. And it’s got to come from innovation from both new ICE’s, new battery technologies (we need massively lighter cars on the road… pulling weight isn’t very sustainable)…

Yes, I'm in New Zealand and had a few Subaru Sports vehicles in the early 1980's, taking them to Ski resorts. I loved them. They were years ahead of their time and I think Toyota were using the brand to test technical advances. (Toyota owns 20% of Subaru). However, I think Toyota influenced them to stay ICE and not venture into EV's. At least they didn't produce a Hydrogen car! lol. (As far as I know)

As always such regulations affect only new cars being produced / sold, so the quality of life and pollution by ICE transport won't change fast, but it's a step in good direction. In some European cities there are also regulations that forbid driving older internal combustion cars in green zones / city center (see Kraków / Poland - law introduced November 2022, and those restrictions will become gradually stricter). 👍 Hope they will also measure real pollution levels from diesel cars and ban those which producers cheated.

i keep hearing the affordable argument from those who watch cnn religiously. what is affordable? to you, it may be a tesla. To an illegal that just crossed the border and is on the path to taking american jobs, it's a renault kwid. Prices cannot drop dramatically unless the government produces the batteries for free, or, supply is moved to China who uses state power to make the batteries "affordable". That's what VW is doing with the new micro bus. Toyota will, Nissan Will soon. After this occurs at scale (even the USA gov can't make it that cheap), battery plants, car plants will be shuttered. You'll get your precious cheaper EV. it'll be communist, shipped in and at the expense of your neighbours jobs. other than that, Tesla will build something for the elites who have jobs until they too are moved to China in the coming years. EV's are at the core of the belt & road. This is why they are stupid and everyone should be clamouring to move to Hydrogen to keep the communist/fascists off their game.

It's more of a when than an if, and it doesn't even need to happen as ICE vehicles get more expensive. Existing EVs will fall in price in the used market as more newer and better EVs are produced. It's not "new EV vs 15 year old asian subcompact", it's "new EV vs new ridiculous legacy auto behemoths costing $50k+", since legacy auto is moving away from producing unprofitable affordable vehicles. In that sense, (Tesla 3/Y) prices are already reasonable for a typical new car buyer.

Tesla supports stricter standards in the US because their net margin is highly dependant on regulatory credit sales. The stricter the standards, the more they sell. Toyota and Honda vehicles tend to have better average fuel economy, so they will not be buying as many credits as truck-dependent Ford, GM and Chrysler... However, if we really wanted to cut emissions, we would end regulatory credit sales. Tesla sales are enabling the sale of gas-guzzling trucks.

Ya Europe and the USA must realize that, if Lithium is the EV battery chemistry; it has zero chance to achieve production goals that would impact CO2. Annual lithium production means a max 6 Million Y packs, in a world market of 80-100 million light vehicles? The same amount of lithium could make 60 million hybrids. If sodium can be made to last; it is abundant enough, as a result cheaper, more scalable. Otherwise EVs are a niche. A further argument for Hybrids is exemplified by the Prius plugin - with an all EV range of 40 miles. That covers most commutes, EV advocates are the first to point out most commutes can be done on a days solar charge with 10 panels - or about 30 miles range; so Hybrids can be all electric 80--90% of the time.

I am just curious here in the US what will happen to all these EV and emission standard initiatives by a certain year will still go should the Republicans control the majority of the government laws and spending. Will they look more towards still using fossil fuels and keep the ICE vehicles going. Or do they even care about climate changes and keep plugging away as we are doing now. There are always two different camps of people, those who like EV's and those that don't, and that will never change. I am not sure how much of the EV push by a certain time frame and setting climate change standards are a political thing. Just wondering how this is going to play out as the US government changes hands to the different parties in the years to follow.

It the new (LMFP) EV battery can come down in price by 60% in the next 5 years the emissions regulations won't matter much. Remember that Tesla's advantage will be the economies of scale it achieves withh making batteries for its energy division and its automotive division. Legacy car companies have missed a trick. They should be designing and manufacturing ev conversion kits for existing models. If mass produced for popular models, they could keep costs down. As clean air zones come in and ICE owners get persecuted, this could be a great option for them. For rarer , classic and older models, the cost should be reflective. They have this whole infrastructure of dealerships. Training their employees to do conversions would be a great way to bring them over to the new technology. I've worked in the motor trade. The repetition of standard fit conversions would be a good way to do this. The new battery technologies are making this more and more viable. The legacy companies can turn a profit with this while they transition their ranges. There are companies already doing this work. The legacy companies could buy them up if needed. It makes sense to me.
