Definitely a nice refit, now with the inverter even though it has two little fans on it do the same thing that you did with the alternator get your computer fan that runs on 12 volt put it on top of that inverter the aluminum heavy part is the heat sink keep it cool it'll make your inverter last longer and put out better

That's a bunch of fantastic upgrades! My catamaran has two Volvo D2-40 engines. I've run each of them for several days straight through - more than 48 hours constant run. They purr like cats and put out plenty of power. HOWEVER! The black plastic box that all the cables run to on the side of the engine is the MDI black box. You might want to look this up. WHEN it fails it is covered under warranty. But by most accounts, it WILL FAIL. It controls start and stop for the engine, and sensors for monitoring engine condition such as temperature. In an emergency you can start the engine the same as hot-wiring any other engine, and use the Stop lever to shut it off. I've had one MDI box fail and installed a secondary Start button in the engine room for emergency starting. I recommend you do as well. Let me know if you need more information. I look forward to more of your sailing videos! They're fantastic!

Love the refit Erik, love your choices, you put your money in items that will increase safety, situation awareness, oh and the essential espresso maker naturally. Having a proper "storm sail" is a big deal, Ive sailed that snot and know the feeling realizing you have taken all the reef and are still overpowered, yet don't want to be without forward speed to manage the seaway. and most folks never realize how little sail they need in a full gale. you always impress with both doing it and knowing the mechanics involved.

Very nice updates Erik. Whishing you nice trips. Starts to become that you only can fail yourself. I know your resistence against lifelines. Maybe a good time to think over your easy attachments point near mast, bow etc for a (short?) lifeline. So that you can use it in critical situations. E.g lowering, role-up of sails somehow blocked. Working is easier with both hands when the lifeline holds you safe/close. All the best, stay safe.

@jackrabbit50476 жыл бұрын
Wow! Those lithium batteries are impressive. Most boats might have 300 Ah from lead batteries, but this would only represent maybe 150 - 160 Ah of actual usable power. Your set up is the equivalent of a 600 Ah bank!
@RealityIsTheNow6 жыл бұрын
Still insanely expensive, though. I'm waiting for lithium to fall by at least 75%.
@jackrabbit50476 жыл бұрын
@@RealityIsTheNow I hear you! I recently bought a 32 Ah LiFe battery for general lighting in a small sailboat and paid over $500 CDN. I must say, though, it is very light and easy to haul around (great for an ageing back), charges fast (a real boon for solar), and the reputed lifespan/extended charging cycles may make it reasonably economical over the long term. We shall see. Wish I could set up my cruising boat (an Aloha 32) with lithium, but I couldn't afford the upfront cost, and opted for the next best thing: two 115 Ah AGM batteries. Most of my sailing is fairly short range for now, so I make do with a pair of 65 W solar panels (and the diesel) to keep the lights & autohelm on and the beer cold. But I sure drool over Erik's setup.
@RealityIsTheNow6 жыл бұрын
Jack Rabbit Oh, I agree lithium might well be the future of marine battery banks...just not yet, at least imo. At ten times the cost of FLA batteries, it's just not justifiable yet. Solar panels used to be ruinously expensive as well, back in the day. But they've dropped so low in price now that I'm seeing them sitting on top of road hazard signs that blink at night lol. At this point, it's nuts to ignore solar. Some day lithium will get there too.

can you give an overview on your boat? This is all very motivating. I like your ideas about sailing. You know enough to be able to make it simple and consequently it doesn't get budgeted out of possibility. It would really be good for you to share what you think a person should look for in a boat. What matters and what isn't so important. What size boat does it take. Trying to find this stuff online is a real challenge. I haven't found a person like you who really knows the ins and outs of sailing and boats from the point of view of sailing first. Wind plus float equals what you are looking for.

Super video! Great stuff. I had very similar set up on my Wauquiez Pretorien 35, including the radar on a gimballed pole attached to the back stay, and I was very happy with it. With the third reef in and if your head sail is a 100%-!05% with a good foam luff rolled down to about 75%, I believe you will find that the boat will behave wonderfully in a good blow.
