We had one similar in our garden years ago, it looked great……until it became established😮 As others have commented they grow huge. They look ok in their early years but soon gain height and the trunk swells. Then there is the spread of the branches. It’s ok saying keep them trimmed, but honestly this gets more difficult the bigger they get, then because it’s too tall, it costs to get the “tree fella” in to lop it! Honestly, as good as it looks, proceed with caution!😉 I’d be more tempted to go for a tall, clump forming bamboo for that corner!

Thanks so much for your insight. I’ve been sent a photo of an established one with the tops cut off and it’s still huge in girth and spread. I’m tempted to keep it, but potted and more as a bush. Thanks again for sharing.

That gunni will get huge, there are smaller varieties you can buy,i planted one about 4 inches tall 3 yrs ago,its about 15 ft now,i have a big garden so it does not matter so much, consider carefully, they are beautiful trees though 😊

Really grateful for this insight, thanks so much. I was swayed by the price and didn't do enough research into the smaller varieties. It really is a beautiful tree, I will keep it potted and controlled.

Definitely GO For It. If the soil around it is drier it will slow the growth. If it has access to lots of damp soil it will drive the growth. Just make sure it's staked in strong as they are floppy due to height and can snap in wind. Water in to establish but don't feed to force the growth. Leave it grow for a few years and then decide if you want to cut back etc. beautiful tree 👍🌳

It really IS a gorgeous tree! When I see it against all the other foliage, it fits so well. Thanks so much for your insight and advice here, I appreciate it. I am certainly leaning towards keeping it, and cutting back when necessary.

What a dilemma- it is beautiful but will get huge! I went for a ‘Baby Blue’ because it’s a smaller Eucalyptus. Maybe give it a try but be prepared that it may have to go if/when it gets too big. Good luck 😊

A dilemma indeed!! I should have had a look at the Baby Blue🥹 I’m leaning towards giving it a go but being ready to hard prune it periodically. Thanks so much!

It’s lovely! Keep it. Once it’s in the ground it will be a bit shorter. Could you air layer the top to make another one for a pot , once it’s well established?

That’s a fantastic idea regarding air layering in time, I certainly do want to keep it! Thank you for your advice, it’s appreciated!

Lovely tree, just going to get way to big really quickly unless kept in a pot.. Gunnii are thirsty thugs so plants around it will need a lot of watering too.

Thanks so much, that’s a really useful point about the plants around it too. I have a trachy fortuneii in that region which I wouldn’t want to suffer. Lots to think about!

Mine has got very big and very fast in a pot - I wouldn't plant it! The roots with take over the trachy next to it very quickly and can span a huge distance. I have seen a 9 year old example that is almost house sized!

Hi there, very grateful for this heads up! I’m leaning towards it being potted and pollarded. My trachy is doing well and I don’t want to jeopardise it.

Keep it in it's pot and maybe cut the bottom of it help restrict grow also then easier to move if you decide x

@@PlantMad Thanks for this. I've ordered an airpot (highly recommended for eucalyptus trees) and plan to keep it controlled. Really grateful for the advice.

Your garden is too small for a massive tree . I wouldn't have one in my garden.
