how does she care for the palms during the winter? Fleece covers?
@tropiclaud4 күн бұрын
@@abi-jl6qo Hi there. The palms my mum has are cold hardy - trachycarpus fortunei, and wagnerianus need no protection at all and will cope with UK temperatures. The chaemerops humilis (European fan palm) will be fine with a little fleece during any frosty periods. But generally it is cold hardy also. My mum doesn’t dabble too much with rare plants that need bringing inside.

Girls, your garden is superb! But, how do you control slugs or worms? Ive got tiger worms in all my plants - from garden centres compost! They are damaging the roots 😢
@tropiclaud14 күн бұрын
@@SwanLake-2024 thanks so much for watching. To be honest, having tried various measures to control slugs, it’s a fight I’ve learnt to accept as defeated. The garden is their village. However I have found that putting plants that they enjoy in pots and tall planters can help. Natural deterrents like egg shells and coffee grounds around the roots. I’ve also used copper tape around pot edges.

@tropiclaud16 күн бұрын
Fargesia bamboo fit perfectly in a tropical-style garden. Living in a colder climate, selecting plants that fit the theme, whilst being robust enough for our weather, is the most we can hope for. Fargesia sits in both camps - fits the theme and is cold hardy.

@tropiclaudАй бұрын
Hello there! It really can be a struggle keeping on top of the watering. During this season, in the West Midlands we’ve been blessed with frequent rain which has made the job much easier. I sometimes water ‘on demand’, using how the plants look as my gauge, I don’t have a watering routine. In extended periods of sun i try to water most evenings, but those episodes are rare where I live.

@tropiclaud2 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for your feedback! I’m sorry to say the schefflera alpina didn’t make it. I was gutted. It was happy in a pot and succumbed when planted out. Not one that I plan to replace though. I have a macrophylla which is doing well. As for cordylines, I protected my Charlie boy last year by tying up the fronds, covering it with fleece and then turning a pot upside down over the top to keep rain out. It came through winter beautifully. I plan to do the same again this year. Hope this helps!
