What is confirmed from this is that Atkinson was a total perfectionist. Arguably why he was so exceptionally funny in the role.

back before gag reels and a time when actors took it as a professional embarrassment to forget their lines or mess up and waste the other actors time. also an interesting snapshot at how much standing around doing nothing happens when creating TV/Film Its quite incredible how times have changed and now gag reels are often funnier than the actual program/film

A typical studio recording for a BBC sitcom in the 80s was usually from 7.30pm - 10.00pm, and it must have felt strange to the audience, used to watching a 30 minute sitcom, having to be produced over 2.5 hours.

@@WilliMar36 It was - Series 2, 3 and 4 were all recorded before 300 audience members in Studio TC8 at the BBC Television Centre in London. How do I know this? Rowan Atkinson said so. So you calling Rowan a liar. Also all the cast has mentioned performing before a studio audience for this show. Only Series 1 was not recorded before a studio audience. Michael Grade, BBC 1 controller told Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson that he would only agree to commission a second series if they moved into a live studio recording in front of an audience. This is called being a real fan of the show and doing some research. Try it sometime.

@GGov86
@GGov86 9 ай бұрын
@@paulannable3734 Yep, though not in this case. One of the definitions of irony is "the use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning", which the original comment would've been a textbook example of, if it hadn't been clarified.
@paulannable3734

@@GGov86 no, Irony involves something being contrary to expectations. That’s what the ironic part is. It’s not simply the opposite of what’s being said. That’s more sarcasm than irony. Like I said… people just don’t get it. Like Alanis Morrisette who wrote a whole song about it without giving a single correct example.

@@paulannable3734Yes it is. Look it up in the dictionary. Saying something is good when it's actually bad is an ironic statement. What you're describing is a very specific type of irony, which many people incorrectly think is the only type.

I can't speak for Blackadder, but my dad was film editor on series 2 of the Young Ones and remembers the then young actors took their comedy very seriously. They'd sit in the cutting room procrastinating if they could have done their take funnier. Comedians are often serious off stage aren't they
