Im a function over form mindset. Drawing from personal experience- Safety Glass for work place envirornment - optional magnification ie Readers Also a Sound Canceling feature and shuts off the hearing aid when certain decibels are exceeded. Currently I cannot wear hearing aids at work because of the random decibel fluctuations. Electronic earplugs for shooting enviornments have this feature.

Very interesting and I'll likely follow these. I'm hoping these are some kind of bone conduction type situation because I'm someone that cannot wear regular hearing aids. It would be an absolute game changer if these have smart lenses that can somehow incoporate live text to speech functionality such that it does some sort of close captioning or subtitles on the bottom of the lenses. Also if they can figure out a way to make these rechargable yet provide at least 18 to 20hrs of wear time per charge. Perhaps even a wireless charging dock of some sort which could help you charge them at night while you sleep? Most importantly, if they can figure out a way to make these programmable to individual prescriptive targets, even at an additional cost, I'm sure many people will gladly pay for that. The better hearing in background noise is great and that alone would have me sold if it makes a significant difference. Looking forward to the next decade or so where I imagine we'll see a lot of innovation in the hearing loss industry.

I wear glasses and now soon hearing aids too. The package/process of no downtime has to be flawless. I can do with comprised hearing for a few days but must have backup glasses. Priorities: Bluetooth across multiple devises (prefer iOS), dependability, periodic software upgrades that can be downloaded, don’t nickel and dime us with multiple tiers - get the best out on the street asap - affordability can come later with scaling.

Love the concept of hearing aid/eyeglass combo. Seems eyeglass lenses are changed more frequently than hearing aids, so should be able to keep sturdy frames and just change the lenses as needed to keep this concept affordable. Many people go without hearing aids because of the cost.

Couple things; first you sold the company Essilor Luxottica short. Its not just frames, but some of the most advanced lenses and coatings on the planet. I have been wearing their lens and coating for decades. As for the HA built intro the frame, I absolutely love the idea. 2 things I do in the morning every day. I put on my eye glasses and put in my HA. Reversed procedure at night. Never one without the other. With HA in the frames you could have more mics with better beam forming. More room for bigger longer lasting batteries and more room for more technology. A WIN WIN. I think they should partner up with Phonak and some of the other HA companies.

When i first read about this product, i am sufficiently old enough to remember eyeglass hearing aids and was wondering if we were going backwards with this product. I still can’t wrap my mind around the fact that there are no wires or ear molds and thinking maybe they relied somewhat on bone conduction. There definitely is a stigma around wearing either device, eyeglasses or hearing aids and since i wear both, some days,i do feel inferior and stigmatized when i wake up and need to deal with other people. I also was wondering about the rate of changes between my vision and my hearing. How often would i have to make changes to one or the other or both? And what about technology? How complicated would it be to upgrade either one? Would i tire of the technology and would it be like Apple products where some people always have to have the newest version. I also have questions about durability and style. Would they be like Tom Cruise with the timeless Ray-Ban Wayfarers? As usual, i have way too many questions and this probably isn’t the forum to discuss all of them. Thank you for another informative video.

The problem with speech to text displayed on the lenses is that you can't text sounds like traffic, sirens, footsteps, chirping birds, etc. In crowded situations where multiple people are talking, it'd be chaotic seeing text trying to keep up with that.

Thanks for the opportunity to comment: (1) Important that the ear hooks are shaped or bend sufficiently to avoid slipping off when head is bent forward. (2) Will they be viable for bifocals? I am constantly switching glasses. (3) Maybe variable focus prescriptions? And (4) will they adequately reproduce music? I also second the strong need for Bluetooth quality, not just Android.

Hmm - I have dispensed spectacle hearing aids (I am now retired), both Bone and Air conduction in the past. With not a great degree of success I must say, so I would be sceptical as well. The best spectacle aids I have ever seen, were made by a well known Dutch electronics company. They had lightweight frames and 4 microphones in each arm and the wearer said they perfomed exceptionally well for him. But this was about 10 years ago and they were still in pre production, I'm not sure they went into full production. I am now of an age when I could well be interested in wearing some sort of hearing assistance and would willingly look at spectacle aids if they performed as well as you believe they will.

@NightBazaar
@NightBazaar 11 ай бұрын
I see your point and agree with you, stigma doesn't matter. However some people are self-conscious about wearing hearing aids for whatever reasons they have. However, today we have the ITE and ITC types of hearing aids that don't stick out like a sore thumb. The drawback is usually limited space to hold programming for extra features. Even so, BTE hearing aids can often be easily hidden by letting hair grow out enough to cover the hearing aids or even the entire ear. On the other hand, if a person is bald, then that's another story.

This sounds like an interesting idea to be sure. One thing I would be interested in would be the microphone/speaker combos in place and if there is any kind of stereo scopic sound available. As a completely blind user, it would help me better in social situations to center the person I am talking to in my field of sound to better pick up on what they are saying as well as looking at them, which at least gives the appearance that I am interested in what they are saying, not to mention the inevitable dropping of items but happens around dinner tables. It seems like a really good opportunity to put in microphones that would help better pick up on sounds that helps with orientation.

Interesting, Cliff! I have to swap glasses when I go to my computer, as my bifocals are just straddling the focal distance for my display (29" eye-to-screen). Also, I tend to update my lenses about every 2 years, so that's also something to consider. I'm a vocal and instrumental musician, with tinnitus, too. Maybe I've got too many variables for this. But, like I said, INTERESTING PRODUCT!!!

Photochromic lenses have improved greatly over the years (the "Essilor" part of EssilorLuxottica is the lens technology conglomerate--they own Transitions photochromics, Crizal coatings, Varilux progressives). Transitions mk8 lenses go from clear inside to sunglass-dark outside and back reasonably quickly. Main problem is that they don't really work inside a car, so I have to use fitovers for that.

When I was a kid in the 1960’s my grandmother had single sided deafness and wore glasses with a tiny microphone in the frame that sent sound to her good ear or amplified sound to her bad ear, I don’t know which. The glasses were typical 1960’s style, not overtly clunky or awful. It was pretty cool. Oddly enough I ended up with Meniere’s also and SSD. Why couldn’t I have got my grandma’s pretty skin? 😜

I would absolutely use a glasses frame that has the electronics embedded in the frame with a wireless in ear speaker. Even better yet, eyeglasses that have additional mic pickups, plug in attachment to my Phonak hull, and wireless in-canal ear pieces working with Phonak doing the sound management and the glasses doing the sound collection and delivery. The connection to the Phonak hull could be BT such that the hull does not need attachment to the glasses frame. A “BT dongle” could provide the bridge between the Phonak hull and the glasses which would further reduce the glasses bulk. On a separate note a Phonak hull with wireless in-ear receiver would be worth an extra $1K cost to make the wire disappear.

Thanks, Dr. Cliff! I like the possibility of getting really high directionality by spacing the two (or more) pickups along the eyeglass temples. I have a Roger Pen that has this kind of directionality, but it's kind of awkward to use - but boy does it improve directionality over what I get from the small spacing on the hearing aids, even my big Naidas. I'm 76 and don't care about cosmesis - in fact wear big 675 battery Naidas so people will know to speak up! Like the long battery life too. But I'd like to be able to turn my head toward the speaker, and hear him/her with much less backchatter. I'd prefer not to have anything but the mikes on the glasses - have them connect to the aids either by bluetooth or wire. I've even thought about attaching my Roger Pen to a baseball cap to get something like this functionality, haven't tried it yet though. Will follow with interest!

I have moderate hearing loss in one and profound hearing loss in the other ear due to loss of one bone in my inner ear. My biggest issue is in noisy environments. I use rechargeable hearing aids and glasses so hearing aids in glasses is not a problem. What would be a problem is not having my glasses or hearing aids. Sometimes 18 hours battery life is not enough time. Recharging equipment and charging time is also a concern.

I go to monthly industry meetings (with moderate hearing loss) wearing my in cannel hearing aids (Widex) and cannot understand what the speaker is saying even after multiple adjustments by my hearing aid professional. I end up recording the lecture on my smartphone and wait until I get home to go over the lecture without any back ground noise. I also wear reading glasses and yes a combination of hearing aids that control background noise would be very important to me.

Do I understand correctly that these are to be OTC devices? (Which makes sense to me, not knocking it.) Seems like a great idea for mild vision and hearing problems for people with stigma concerns. The speech-in-noise success alone makes me happy to dream about. There's still the double whammy of being without either function if they have to be serviced. And in my case, which includes multiple sets of glasses (blended tri-lenses for everyday, bifocal computer/reading glasses, and three sets of reading glasses for tablet/streaming, bed, and purse-the latter two just leftovers from earlier prescriptions), I wouldn't be the market they're trying to reach. Fabulous invention, though, for the right audience. I do suggest they make the frames metal for durability and re-use when the Rxs change and the lenses need to be replaced, but maybe the OTC price point will be low enough that most wearers won't consider replacing the whole unit to be a problem.

Dr. Cliff, I'm excited by the potential. Eyeglass frames radically increase the area available for building-in ultra-directional microphones. Also, wireless charging between the in-ear unit and the frame should be explored. But the number one innovation that I'm praying for involves development of devices that are worn outside of one's ear canal. Recently you exposed piezo speaker technology that if incorporated in an over (not inside) or in front of the ear design would be wonderful. The currently available headphone technology of Shokz is acceptably comfortable and exceptionally audible for me with intense tinnitus and age related hearing loss. Please exert you industry leadership to foster adoption of these radically updated technologies.

Doc, this is an interesting possibility and I see both opportunities and weaknesses in the concept. Positive input: As a glasses wearer who also wears RTC devices, one of my greatest complaints is how my glasses temples necessarily push out my hearing aids, making it so they never quite sit straight. This concept would directly address this by reducing overall use of the real estate behing the ear. I also see how you could optimally place forward and lateral microphones that wouldn't be obscured by human biology. The issues I see are really concerning though: I wear multiple pairs of glasses most days: sunglasses, sports glasses, multifocals, etc. I do not see a world where a single pair of frames would meet all my needs, nor do I see a world where I would be willing to pay for multiple hearing devices to meet all wear scenarios. Also, I'm hard on my glasses. The frames get bent and I bed them back, I put them down in different places, I leave my sunglasses in my hot car, and I wear my sports glasses on bike rides in downpours for my commute to and from work. Finally, I get new primary frames every two years when I update my prescription. Given the cost of hearing devices, I could see this becoming a significant cost burden. I could see the business model working for this concept, but they would end up being a luxury item and not usable by most people due to downstream costs. Just my thoughts on the idea.

If this company is able to come out with a pair of glasses with hearing aid built in, in a way that you could remove the hearing aids from the glasses. That way when either the glasses or hearing aids need fixed you don't have to go without both every time one or the other need fixed. I would also like to see them install mics in the frames that will listen to your sorrounding, when you go somewhere like a noisy restaurant, and place what is spoken at your table into closed captioning that would be displayed on the bottom half of your lens. And have that feature to be able to be turned on and off in the phone app. I would also like to see them put the feature that resound has come up with that will soon be standard in all hearing aids, I hope. And that is the feature that will replace telecoil systems in concert halls, airports, etc.... that will all headphones and hearing aids connect to a loud speaker system so you don't miss any announcements or directly to the mixer at concerts so you can listen enjoy the music better. Do you think that may be possible in the next 2-3 years from now?

This sounds great. I do wear glasses all the time, prescription reading (1.0) & regular sunglasses. Prescription sunglasses like this would be a helpful addition. Bifocals? I have very small ear canals so my current Signia hearing aids are difficult to fit. I have a child's dome now & am constantly trying to shove it deeper into my ear where hearing is better. I would buy these glasses in a hot minute! I don't know how they'd connect to your ears but I'm not vain about wearing hearing aids. I do use my hearing aids to watch TV, stream, and listen to podcasts and music, so battery life is a big concern. I have various methods to get longer battery life: charge hearing aids & air pods & air pods pro overnight. That about takes care of it. Count me all in.

I have struggled with fit and function with Oticon aids for over a year. Those cost me over $3,000. The result is inly so so. I will buy these glasses with plano lenses (no prescription) if they available and in the $1,000 range.

The engineer in me says by separating mics on each side, front and back, with software that should be able to make them very directional. That, as well as the invisibility of the HA would IMHO be their biggest asset.

Sounds to me like a great idea. I've worn glasses since I was 17 and I'm now a bit shy of 80. I don't wear hearing aids because of the background thing. I've been reviewed and approved for Cochlear implants but due to recent health issues I can't undergo additional surgery in under a year. I still wear my glasses even though the Dept. of motor vehicles in my state have concluded that I can drive without glasses. My vision is sufficiently clear that I can get along with out my glasses but old habits are hard to break. I do wear a bone conduction head set that allows me to understand phone conversations and my computer and am not in the least bothered by the appearance. Fashion plate I'm not.

One advantage is glasses are easier and quicker to put on & off than hearing aids, not to mention compared to glasses + hearing aids (+ N95 mask), and everyone knows how. It matters to be able to replace the Rx lenses every year or two. Could the lenses be part of the acoustic design? Stigma aside, hearing aid costs and hassles are off-putting for people with mild hearing loss. This product could overcome that.

This would be great! I do not care if people see a huge earing aid in my ear...I just want to HEAR and not deal with all the background noise. Plus, the tiny earing aids are easy to loose when exercising, etc. so having them on my glasses would be helpful. I will be the first in line when these hit the market.

Interesting. It was a flash back seeing the old eyeglasses with built in hearing aids with the custom ear molds and tubes, which is what my mother wore since probably the 1950s. Severe hearing lost but she was able to engage fully with her aids with exceptions that we’ve all experienced. The new eye glass aids that you are talking about , well….maybe it’s time for this technology. You couldn’t disclose any details of the design but I would assume you still need a Bluetooth receiver in your canal? Back to my mother’s glasses, I think sometimes when she needed new eyeglasses the stems with the aids were just re attached to her new lens frame if I remember right. They were actually pretty reliable as I don’t remember her having any down time but maybe they fixed them quick for her.

Hard to give feedback without any info. From this video, it looked like it’s just plain-old speakers on the frame next to the ear. If so, then i doubt they would perform well. Also, can you adjust the settings to your specific hearing loss? Will everyone around you also hear the sound coming out of the frame speakers? Assuming these are just frame speakers. Or maybe bone conduction? If so, i doubt the frame can be tight enough from regular lense frames.

My dad had hearing aids in his glasses in the middle 1970's. His biggest problem with them as I recall was car wind noise. In the left ear especially. The car had A/C but Dad would drive with the window down in town. There were other issues but that was the biggest. I don't drive with my windows down so it is not as much of a factor for my hearing aids.

Good points. Must be lightweight, i.e., my frames are often a metal that is extremely lightweight or I get migraines, and that is before the progressive corrective lens and sound issues. An all in one glasses, hearing aid, sunglasses would be appealing but what happens when one item needs to be adjusted or repaired? I am not sure there would be many places I would trust to service ALL that all-inclusive technology and how long would I be with compromised hearing & eyesight? Very interesting ideas though. Text to lens might be interesting as well. (Might as well ask for the world while I am at it! 😂) End user costs? My lens prescription changes on average every 4 years....does this mean audiologist & opticians or optometrists are combining offices/clients? Which specialty would prescribe? PS my ears are too busy (mask, hearing aid & glasses) and this would be a positive step!

I would be intersted to learn more about them. I can't see how they will work. Are the actually glasses that you would wear for helping you do see better?? Or are they a prop to deliver the hearing aids to the ear? Thanks. Hope that made sense.

I totally agree that the glasses will be a game changer. Think of the capabilities: wired connection between the ears makes for a much faster correspondence between the ears. Cameras that can locate where you are looking and form a beam so you can hear the person you are looking at much better and at the same time reduce background noise. The beamforming will be so much more accurate with cameras. And that's just the tip of the iceberg

I would be wearing both , so this will be up my alley , but my eyesight is the opposite of my hearing , very bad so I am not sure if this would help my situation as far as sight is concerned , if this can fit a high diopter in lenses would also be great , as far as the hearing tech , please make it bluetooth compatible and easily attainable in cost , also put some software for captions and such that can be displayed to the users eyes through the lenses

It's funny I've been following OTC hearing aids quite closely mainly by watching your reviews cliff I can sort of understand why they'd release OTC hearing aids although if you're paying almost 2 grand for a pair of OTC hearing aids you'd think they'd be good I'm actually referring to the recent Sony ones you reviewed. More iPhone compatibility and less Andriod compatibility it's rather unfortunate even prescription hearing aids are going that same route

Right now I have 2 pairs of glasses because I have developed double vision for distance only. 😵‍💫 So I have one pair for distance -- watching TV 📺, driving 🚗, walking 🚶‍♀️. Then I have a second pair (called office glasses by my optometrist) for close up (reading) and for middle distance -- using my computer 🖥 or reading my music while songleading. Then of course there is a 3rd pair for prescription sunglasses 🕶 needed for driving on sunny days or just being outside on sunny days. So hmmm ... lots of problems for me with my terrible vision. 😕

These would be great for 2 reasons in addition to improved hearing.. It's a lot easier to find a pair of glasses that got knocked off in the grass and your hearing aid wouldn't be easily dislodged when removing a mask. Plus, if I mislaid my glasses I could use the find my hearing aid function on my phone to find them.

I would be very interested in this. It seems that by using the frames it would be possible to put a much larger lithium ion battery in them to get significantly greater working time than conventional hearing aids. Add in bluetooth for Apple and Android phones with really good audio quality and the ability to use an app to really fine tune the levels and frequency response both as a hearing aid and bluetooth player and this product would be a winner especially as an OTC product. I would assume prescription lenses could be made by an optometrist and that Transistions leneses would be available.

The concept you are describing really sounds exciting and I would love to try it. However, I thought I understood it would only be available for those with relatively mild hearing loss. Additionally, I have had cataract surgery which means I take my glasses off a lot because I really do not benefit from them in "close up" situations. So, if I removed the glasses, would I lose the hearing aid feature? Or would there be a way that could somehow be avoided with the glasses off? And, I suppose, would these only be for younger people. Also, the cost factor would be important. How much would they cost. I heard an estimate of around $1,000. Is that accurate? I am very interested in hearing more!
