They missed 2 things in my opinion: 1. Conformal fuel tanks. They were spec'd but not added. 2. The new GE414-400HE engine that has 20% more thrust and 20% more range. I am pretty sure that other nations like Canada were going to choose the F-18 over the F-35, so the US dropped those 2 features to get them to invest in the F-35.

I worked on the F-18D while in the Marines. Went to Kuwait in 1999 to enforce a no-fly no occupation zone. Our MO (Maintenance Officer) showed us (probably classified) footage of a mission destroying a SAM site and evasion of a SAM missile. So in my opinion the F-18 platform is a VERY good 4th generation plus /LOW 5th generation support aircraft. I loved the F18D but I know her time has passed....... God Bless America

half true. if the plane is not quality, then you will have problems selling it to other countries.

F-18 was one of the first really modern looking fighter. With the twin canted tails and the extreme leading edge strakes, it looked like it was going mach 1 sitting on the ground.

A question if I may: The NGAD program has been put on hold to reevaluate the platform requirements, however the F/A-XX requirements haven't changed. Using the loyal wingman concept, how are they going to fit all these aircraft (conventional and drone) on a single carrier or are they going to build a dedicated drone launching and recovery mini carrier for them?

F/A-18 Hornet & Super Hornet got an extended lease on life, NOT because they were "so good," but due to cost-cutting: 1) Aging out of A-6's 2) The cancellation of the A-12 due to mismanagement and Clinton Admin military downsizing 3) F-35 cost of $102M per vs $66M per Super Hornet.
@georgehugh345519 сағат бұрын
One measure of an attack jet's value is: *_Is the US willing to allow other nations to have it?_* F/A-18 Hornets were sold right away to such dodgy places as Spain and Kuwait.... A-6 Intruders were NEVER sold outside the US. B-1's, B-2's also. F-111's (AU only)

Of course there has not been many dogfights lately ... so lesser performance is not as big an issue for 90% of potential future missions.

Wednesday, November 06, 2024 . . . I propose a "Nth Generation Air Dominance(NGAD)"; the technology exists today or should commence development of a Fighter vehicle(tier-one) with the capability of launching from ground level, say an Airport, and continuing into Space(i.e., ELO). This would be a three-tier development package where whereby a second-level space Drone(tier-two) is also capable of terrestrial takeoff and space-penetration capability; its purpose would be refueling and weaponizing tier-one; it would also, of course, be capable of defending itself into space-penetration with assist from terrestrial fighter escorts into space-penetration. The "third tier" would likely be a larger vehicle that would service both (tier-one and tier-two) while also providing defensive support for itself and the two subordinate tiers; any additional refinements to this initial configuration would be entirely discretionary.

The Navy really made a mistake in building all of these short range F-18s they are spending billions trying to get close to the loadout and performance of the F-14s. They need to upgrade to a new plane as soon as possible.

I doubt that very seriously. The F-15EX would smoke this thing and their wingman. It’s a jet trying to do too many things at once and therefore can be good but not great unless they don’t care about the cost per unit and even then it’s still hard. The F-15 was initially designed from the get-go as an Air Superiority fighter first and foremost and that’s still at its heart. It has much more powerful engines, greater range, larger payload capability, faster and able to fly at higher altitudes. Ultimately it comes down to the pilot in the seat and who sees who first. With that said this is no disrespect to the Navy just believe they should get the Air Superiority carrier defense fighter they deserve. Essentially the new version of the F-14.
@georgehugh345519 сағат бұрын
Eh...F-15 still too big for the close-in dogfight. F-16 has a better turn rate and thrust-to-weight ratio, although as you said, it does "come down to the pilot in the seat."
@P-J-W-77719 сағат бұрын
@ The F-15 does pretty damn good in dog fighting scenarios during red flag exercises. I’ll agree the F-16 is an absolute beast in the turning game and has a very fast recovery rate. I honestly don’t know of another aircraft that can actually pull and sustain the same level of G’s that the F-16 can. It definitely isn’t given enough credit. On another note, both the F-15 and F-16 were more or less entirely designed by the Fighter Mafia which in my opinion is why they are so good at what they do.

F15 can 97% of the time, can never get into the Airspace any NAVY carrier based birds can..
@P-J-W-77744 минут бұрын
@ Hmm, sure! Sure their fuel tanks alone won’t carry them there but they have these really big flying gas stations that are more than capable of seeing that they make it there. As far ECM, the Air Force also has really big flying ECM sentinels as well as drones. Not only that but the F-15 is more than capable of carrying its own ECM pods. So I’d say it would be more than good enough to make it there, fight its way in, complete their mission and fight their way back out. Besides, there are plenty F-15’s already station at various bases outside of the U.S.. Lastly the F-18 isn’t anymore stealthy than the F-15.

It was a good light fighter/bomber 20 years ago. Although as a fighter he is very mediocre. I understand that he was so late in the Navy for the same reason why the main Air Force aircraft still have and will be F-15 and F-16 - there is simply nothing to replace them. The F-22 is planned to be decommissioned as outdated and too expensive to upgrade and operate. And the F-35 was clearly created not for real combat operations, but for something else. Apparently, for the enrichment of the US military-industrial complex, because there is no other way why it is produced in such quantities with a thousand known unresolved problems and the fact that only half of all produced are at least somehow ready for use in another way.
