Zeppelin got its name from the time Jimmy worked on a song for his dear friend Jeff Beck (RIP). Jeff Beck had Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones (both still studio musicians), Nicky Hopkins and Keith Moon (drummer for The Who) record his song called Beck's Bolero. John Entwistle, bassist for The Who was supposed to join them but he didn't show up so John Paul Jones played bass instead. The session went so well, that they half-joking/half-serious said they should form a band. John Entwistle was there either later that day or the next when he heard about it and either Moon (or Entwistle) said a band like that would go over like a lead balloon and either Entwistle (or Moon) said no, like a lead Zeppelin. Jimmy liked the way the opposites played off each other so remembered the name when he formed his own band. No, Jimmy wasn't using the bow, that's a wah pedal. In addition to the song taking lyrical inspiration from Robert Johnson, Jonesy took inspiration from Stevie Wonder's song Superstition for the keys. There's a great live version of this on YT from Earls Court. Zeppelin touched on so many genres of music like punk, country, blues, rock, folk, rockabilly, progressive rock, and more. My favorite blues song of theirs is Tea For One and my favorite "epic" is Achilles' Last Stand.

If you think this rocks hard, you need to keep in mind that Led Zeppelin always rocked much harder in concert. Watch the video “Trampled Under Foot live at Earl’s Court in 1975”. Jimmy Page’s guitar solo is extreme, even for him, and you’ll get physically sore just watching John Bonham on the drums. Even if you don’t do a reaction video for it, watch it for yourself and listen to it LOUD.

I was 16 in 1970 so had it all. The concerts,the parties,the music,oh the music. That decade is the best in history with the 60’s just behind,then the 80’s and a long way back,the 90’s. Don’t even mention the dire soulless garbage from 2000 onwards with a few notable exceptions,usually classic bands producing albums. Led Zeppelin were right up there no doubt. I’ve loved LZ for 53 years. If one of them was missing, it wouldn’t be the same. But I have to say- the older I’ve gotten the more I love John Paul Jones. His bass playing, organ, piano, mandolin- he’s amazing. His bass lines stick in my brain, one song in particular being “the Lemon Song”. I don’t think you’ve done that one yet. Also, please do “You Shook Me”. Their 1st and 2nd albums have a soft spot in my heart.

The story about the name "Led Zeppelin" apparently came from The Who drummer Keith Moon... When guitarist Jimmy Page was in The Yardbirds in the late 60's, he and his friend Jeff Beck (guitar) also a former Yardbirds member, started jamming together in a new band w/ The Who members Keith Moon (drums) and (allegedly) John Entwistle (bass)... Page wanted this new band to be a 'supergroup' after rehearsals sounded good (John Paul Jones had also possibly jammed w/ them on bass), but Keith Moon joked that they would "go over like a lead balloon..." (They would crash and burn like the Hindenburg zeppelin). The new band never made it past rehearsals, but Jimmy Page had that name in his mind - "lead zeppelin"... The Who and The Yardbirds were busy playing gigs and Jeff Beck formed The Jeff Beck Group w/ singer Rod Stewart (yeah, him), and were busy. The Yardbirds split in 1968 when Keith Relf (vocals) and Jim McCarty (drums) quit the band... Their manager demanded that they sign the rights to The Yardbirds name to Jimmy Page... Chris Dreja (bass) also left soon after... Jimmy Page wanted to form a "New Yardbirds" and needed a singer (and drummer)... he and manager Peter Grant spoke to all the prospective singers in London, but couldn't find any good talents who were available. Page began asking for talents outside London, and someone suggested this "kid" from Birmingham (North of London) named Robert Plant... Page would see 19 yr old Robert Plant perform w/ the band Hobbstweedle , a hippie folk band in Birmingham, and found his vocals "unbelievable"... He wondered why Plant wasn't famous yet (he thought he might be an a-hole!), but Robert Plant was charming and funny... and it turned out that bands thought he was too "out there" (gay) as a performer w/ his long hair and his sexually overt stage presence and vocal delivery... Even manager Peter Grant was not keen on having Plant in the band initially, and was kept on 'probation' for over a year (he was paid less than the band's road crew on tour) before the hit records started coming in... Robert Plant went to London to stay at Jimmy Page's house, and they talked about music and which direction they would go... Plant suggested his friend John Bonham should join on drums... John Bonham was married w/ a son at age 20... he also had trouble getting gigs as a drummer because he was too loud and aggressive on the drum kit, and was often fired by bands... But he had a family to support, and Jimmy Page saw John Bonham perform w/ a singer named Tim Rose and immediately called manager Peter Grant to sign Bonham up for the new band. Bonham was reluctant, but finally agreed to come down to London and jam... John Paul Jones was a prominent musician/ songwriter/ arranger in the 60's, but by 1968, he was tired of session work & not writing... His wife suggested calling up Jimmy Page to see if he wanted to join the "New Yardbirds" on bass. Page agreed to have him join the new band. The New Yardbirds rehearsed in the fall of 1968 and it was a "thrilling" session... They knew that the 4 of them together was something special... They did a tour of Scandinavia as The New Yardbirds, and then needed a new name... Page remembered the "lead zeppelin" joke and thought it might be fitting for this new band... Manager Peter Grant suggested changing the spelling to Led Zeppelin. They recorded the first Led Zeppelin album in 1968 and the buzz around the band was that it was going to be huge... Grant got a $143K advance from Atlantic Records for the first Led Zeppelin album... CBS Records, The Yardbirds' label, wanted the band, but Grant showed CBS that Jimmy Page had never signed The Yardbirds' recording contract. The first Led Zeppelin album was released in early 1969, and the cover was appropriately a photo of the Hindenburg zeppelin disaster. The played the USA as an opening band in 1969, but FM radio promoted Led Zeppelin and the album became a top 10 hit.

The name Led Zeppelin: According to The Rolling Stone, Keith Moon (Some accounts credit John Entwistle with the joke) of The Who joked that the band would go over like a led balloon. This is my favorite Led Zep song of all time. This album came out right after my Sophomore year of High School. This album/cassette rocked every kid's stereo and car stereo all over Northern California that summer. It was ALL you heard... this was ANTI Disco!!! The keyboard was a Hammond console, you know, church organ with bass pedals. That bass-line you liked... JPJ was playing that with his feet. You want to hear funk rock from Zeppelin, the songs on the Presence album has some great songs, “For Your Life”, “Hots on for Nowhere”, “Royal Orleans”. On the same album, different styles, are the incredible “Achilles Last Stand”, “Tea for One”, and “Nobody’s Fault but Mine”. Another song I think from the CODA album, “Traveling Riverside Blues” is great.

Jimmy came up with the name. After they finished their tour obligations as New Yardbirds. Were pretty much told to drop the name. It was a variation on the phrase Led Balloon. That's another story as to the origin of that reference and how it came about

Keith Moon came up with the name "Led Zeppelin" when the song "Beck's Bolero" was being created in the studio, with Jimmy, JPJ, Beck, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon. They toyed with the name for this group of guys, because they said it would go over like a lead balloon. Jimmy remembered the name when the New Yardbirds needed a name.

We all know L.Z. was Jimmy's vision, it is amazing how lucky he was to find these other genius musicians to make it work, literal work being the key to their success. All the great bands of that era worked very hard, doing research of all types music to create the new sound, learning what the newly produced equipment of the day could do, and bringing it all together. They made it look easy, but it was insane talent combined with lots of serious work.
