Great addition to your software. I have been using DeskProto for well over 15 years and am using 7.1. Is there an upgrade option or is it necessary to purchase version 8. I love what you do and I belive you have used some of the things I have machined on your demos. Thanks, Gary

Glad to speak to a long-term user, happy that you like the software ! For current users V8 indeed is available at a special update price, which you can find on our website. The Newsletter email that we will send soon will also mention this.

Im very excited to download this newest version and try it. The 'Special Tools' are definitely of interest- especially the horizontal cutter. It seems like this would be very easy to adapt to orienting the cutter vertically and cutting along the side of the part too. (Possibly just in the Post processor?) With a 4th/rotary axis: Im assuming itll basically generate 3 axis toolpaths (XY,A) ? Oh im excited - this could be a pretty big deal for my operation.
@Deskproto2 ай бұрын
Correct: you can indeed also use this type of toolpath with a cutter that is vertically oriented: this is a checkbox in the special cutter definition. The toolpaths then indeed will be (XYA).

@@Deskproto Is there any chance you can redo the 4th axis setup for the new version of DeskProto? I am so lost
@Deskproto2 ай бұрын
@@CoryRay-g4r The 4-axis videos that we have on line still can be used for Version 8. Anyway: for new users we strongly advise to start with a number of 3-axis projects, and only then proceed to 4-axis work.

Hello. Now I'm curious, with the rotation axis milling and what we see at 10:16, how difficult would it be to add support for CNC lathes? That would be amazing, as I see more and more people (myself included) retrofitting their lathes. P.S. I love that DeskProto supports Linux as of version 7. Before, I often said, “I’d give an arm and a leg for a good CAM program with Linux support.” ... So, is it alright with you guys if I keep my limbs?
@Deskproto2 ай бұрын
It is absolutely alright: my two arms and legs are sufficient for my daily use :-) Including turning (so supporting a lathe) is not easy as that is a completely different process: it creates a 3D shape based on a 2D curve, needing a completely different user interface as well. It would be a major effort to support this, and we have no plans in that direction, sorry. Happy that you like the Linux version !
@ncc1701ea2 ай бұрын
@@Deskproto Ah, too bad. I would give an arm and a leg if DeskProto would support CNC lathes! 😀 I was hoping that path generation for a lathe would boil down to a 2D pocket operation, just with a triangular cutter shape instead of a round one. Or perhaps an adaptation of the code for 4th-axis milling, allowing for more asymmetric cutter shapes (lathe inserts) in addition to the standard rotationally symmetric milling bits.
@Deskproto2 ай бұрын
@@ncc1701ea On a lathe the cutting follows a completely different principle: the part makes the movement that cuts. That is not easy to mix with milling, where the cutter makes that movement. Sorry.

It is possible to program cavities/ports on DeskProto for 4+1 machining? Or is it in sight for next version?
@DeskprotoАй бұрын
When I interpret "4+1 machining" as using 4 CNC axes and a fifth axis that can be set manually, then the answer is Yes (though it is not an easy process). In the Rotary machine settings (machine definition) you need to check "Has CNC controlled A-Axis", "Has B-axis" and the sub-option "Machine with 4th axis tilt option". In the Help file you can read how this works.

Hi, do they offer a hobby edition, do you have a link

Yes, a hobby license is available. Check the prices page of the DeskProto website.

I am trying to sort through all of the cam options for my new altmill with 4th axis. Looking at this it appears there are some accuracy issues potentially with 4th axis, but I am seeing some really cool functions like the inlay tool. My other choice is paying for fusion cam 4th axis adhoc or going for something like this. Can I get accurate 4th axis with this and what can this do that fusion cannot?
@Deskproto2 ай бұрын
The accuracy issue for DeskProto is in the STL file machining. Though you can create very small details, like in jewelry, and smooth surfaces, it is not a good tool to create moving mechanisms where an axis must fit in a hole at a tight tolerance. Cannot tell you much about Fusion 360, I know that it has far more features than DeskProto and also has a much longer learning curve. Do not know if it can do V-carving and gray-value to Z-height conversion (on digital images). The pricing system is completely different as well.

Hello buddy, it's nice to use DESKPROTO. I have a question to ask you. I use "Advanced Geometry" - "Two or Multiple Sides, Automatic Rotation" for double-sided carving of materials, and fix the materials with the A-axis. Now there is a problem with the alignment of the X-axis (left and right) on both sides. The A axis is parallel to the Y axis, and the X-axis error on both sides is 1-2mm. I have tried it three times and there is still an error. The default parameters used are MACH3 drive and 3040CNC machine. The rough and fine machining on both sides are fine, and the model file is also fine. However, there is only a 1-2mm difference between the left and right sides, and there is no deviation in the longitudinal direction. Have you encountered this problem? Thank you~
@Deskproto28 күн бұрын
The probable cause of this misalignment is the position of the zero point on your machine. This misalignment will result when the X=0 position on the machine has not been set with the centerline of the cutter exactly above the rotation axis centerline.
@rocshang-z7e28 күн бұрын
@@Deskproto I confirm that the zero crossing point is at the center point of the A-axis. If there is an error, the actual error is too large. There are nearly 2MM on both sides of the workpiece, which can be recognized by the naked eye. Is there a problem with setting the processing border? The first mistake was that the software default parameter error was over 2MM. The second time, selecting the "No additional settings" option in the border section resulted in an error of less than 2MM
@Deskproto26 күн бұрын
@@rocshang-z7e The Border setting should not influence the zero point position, and thus also not where exactly the cutter will move. From a distance I cannot tell you what is wrong, sorry. About the zero point: an error in X=0 of 1 mm will result in a difference between top and bottom of 2 mm. Perhaps it is best to test with a very simple design: a cube. Then you can open the G-code in an editor and check the min and max coordinates for X: the should be reverse.
