For those curious about how the .224 stacks up to the 22-250 hotrod, watch this video. I think once you watch this video you'll come to fully appreciate what the .224 is capable of. It's easy to beat up on new things saying it's already been done, but this is slightly different. The .224 can do more out of a short action AR15 than a .22-250 can do out of a longer action and the .224 spanks it past 850 yards. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJyroqBqi5uNbNU

I've been trying to follow this new cartidge as much as I can and I can honestly say that like you Tim I am excited about it. I'm waiting to hear more when they get everything fine tuned and I've been eyeing the new Savage MSR they are releasing in this chambering. The only info I haven't seen yet is what type of optic would be best for this caliber, would reticles calibrated or tuned for .223/5.56 work with it or would it need a dedicated reticle?

Also by the way the 6.8 SPC was originally intended for the Army to have a more potent round out of short barreled rifles. It was never intended to be a long-range cartridge.

Rifles First it's completely different than the 7.62 by 39. Like I said it was made specifically to shoot in sbr's 7.62 by 39 doesn't work well and 7 inch barrels it throws huge flames and has piss poor ballistics. The 762 needs at least a barrel length of 10 in.

6.8 was meant for 0-500 yard engagements from a military standard 14.5" rifle without substantial increase in recoil or loss of magazine capacity. It does this fairly well but not perfectly. It's a very misunderstood cartridge much like the 6.5 Grendel. It packs the power most hunters look for with half the recoil of a .308, and comes in the best modern sporting rifle ever devised so, ya know. Buy it.

Holy crap. 1) I want that black and blue combo rifle so bad. Lol. 2) I couldn't believe my ears when Tim said that the rifles had threads under the muzzle brakes. I thought that the tan one (the one they were using the can on) had threads, and the black one was just an all-in-one barrel/brake combo like I've seen before. DAM those are some tight tolerances. I can't even see the line between barrel and brake on the black rifle (then again, it is a video; maybe it's easier to see in real life). Great job JP!

If the price is going to be very simular to 5.56 than maybe this round may take the place of some peoples 5.56 rifles. It's essentially a 223 on steroids. High velocity light bullet was the whole thing with 5.56. This takes that formula and just turns it up higher. Only thing that will kill it in that role is if there are any issues getting 30 rounds mags. It probably will never happen but it's a interesting thought. If I can get 30 round mags and it really is prices similar to 5.56 I'd consider building a rifle for it. I've always wanted to build an MK12 upper.
@LeftThumbBreak
@LeftThumbBreak 6 жыл бұрын
Even at point blank that's a 90-100 grain bullet and that bullet will hold its energy to 3, 4, 5, 6 -1000+ I really like the grendel but this round's likely to win out.
@biggboysouth
@biggboysouth 6 жыл бұрын
I will not make any predictions but I am curious to see how popular this round gets. I've never been into alternative rounds for the AR15 since they are usually just fads that die off. last round I was excited for was the 6.8SPC and you see where that is now lol. I still think the 6.8 is a great combat round but for us normies it's a crappy option due to price and lack of components. I can see .224V being a fun round and who knows maybe it'll prove it's self as a good medium game round. I'd like to see some ballistic gel tests of standard bullets weights and maybe some slightly lighter bullets coming out of a 16" barrel. Could be good for self defense.

This cartridge is pointless in a bolt gun. Get a 22-250 or 220 swift with a barrel twist for whatever weight range projectiles you want to shoot. This round is only worth something being fed out of AR mags. Other than that ballistically there's several rounds that do what this does, and better.

I have an AR15 with a 16" barrel that I can bang on plates to 800 yards with. 24.3 grains of Varget under a 69gr SMK. I don't doubt for a second that I could add another 4 or 500 yards to that with this round when hand rolling. The idea that it uses standard AR lowers means I could get into this for a lot cheaper. And the biggest deal is that I could go long range shooting for cheap. Really cheap compared to other bigger options. Plus I already have the suppressors for it too. I am keeping an eye on this one. I will let other people work out the bugs first but this is on my radar. As is a 6.5CM bolt gun.

Thanks guys! I really like these early reviews. Some people are missing the point... Guns are for a lot more than killing people or large animals! I have been searching forever for a rifle that will make nice small groups at 800 to 1000 yards and not either break the bank, or beat me to death if I want to shoot a couple hundred rounds. Precision shooters need development like this and I'm personally excited by the .224 Valkyrie (Valk). Not to mention, varmint hunting! 6.5 Creed is great, if you don't mind having a bruise on your shoulder, spending a small fortune on ammo, and replacing barrels. .338 LPM and .300 MW are also great, but they deliver way more energy than I need for punching a hole in a target and talk about expensive... This new caliber shows a lot of promise for us budget constrained long range precision shooters! I can hardly wait!

Honestly for me what interests me in this cartridge is the idea of getting heavier (ie 80 grain and up) projectiles moving at similar speeds to 55 grain 5.56. I’d almost like to see if hand loads with 62 grain green tips loaded into the .224 would be able to punch through level three armor in one shot instead of the five or ten we deal with now.

Love the channel! 👍🏼. Just have to remind others of Hornady’s 6mm HAGAR, which Carl Bernosky made famous (in my eyes) in 2011 when he won the the National Championships with it, in an AR 15 platform. I believe the HAGAR nicely fills that gap 22 plinkster spoke about. The HAGAR uses the same 6.8 spc bolt face and pushes pills, as heavy as 105grn, as fast as 2800 fps. I hate to say it, but it looks look like the HAGAR trumps the Valkyrie’s ballistics. The only problem I see with the HAGAR is that I hasn’t seemed to gain popularity. No factory ammo produced, but Hornady has made runs of brass. Thanks

Most hot rod 22caliber cartridges are not designed to shoot the heavier projectiles. 22-250 has more potential with a custom barrel twist and adjusted leads but otherwise 22-250 won't shoot >77gr worth a crap. I suspect JP's prototype rifles are probably more accurate than many manufacturers established factory guns (wish I could afford one). I'm impressed with the Valkyrie, how can you not be, but I got into the 6.5 Grendel because it offered fantastic BC's (not too far below the Valkyrie) and because it offered a larger caliber and heavier bullet than the 5.56 that is still supersonic at 1000 (albeit with more drop/drift than the Valkyrie), doubled as a hunting rifle and is still a great long range target gun in an AR15 with low recoil. I knew that it was just a matter of time before someone applied the same basics as the Grendel using a .22 caliber bullet. No surprise the smaller, lighter bullet can produce an even higher BC than the Grendel and less drift/drop. I don't see the Valkyrie taking the place of the Grendel unless your prey are smaller animals or you're a target shooter only. As a prairie dog or predator gun the Valkyrie definitely takes top billing for long distance work. In my opinion, for someone who hunts whitetail and larger game with their Grendel, the Valkyrie makes a fantastic addition to the family but isn't a replacement. For folks who hunt whitetail (assuming you live somewhere it's legal to hunt deer with a .22 caliber centerfire) and smaller game and want to use the same rifle for long range target shooting the Valkyrie looks like an excellent choice. I definitely won't be swapping my Grendel for a Valkyrie, I don't hunt prairie dogs or coyotes and the Grendel is a better choice for hunting everything else (in it's class) so for me it would be a paper puncher only which, for me, is hard to justify the cost. I predict that the Valkyrie is going to become extremely popular, no rise and fall for this one. I could be wrong but with the backing from Federal and the growing interest in long distance shooting the Valkyrie offers an incredible amount of benefits for what seems like will be an affordable cartridge to shoot. I'm looking forward to seeing how the final commercial cartridges perform in the kinds of affordable rifles most of us shoot. Thanks for the great video, it's an impressive caliber for the AR15 size platform.

From what I have seen from these long range cartridges is that they all seem to require barrels over 18". Do any of these show any advantage over M262 clone out of a 14.5" tube?

Standard Mk262 gets a little over 2500fps from a 16" barrel. Yes, the Valkyrie can beat that.

delta3two I have looked and can not find a single report on .22V out of an M4 length barrel. I don't know where he is getting his numbers.
@ostiariusalpha
@ostiariusalpha 6 жыл бұрын
+dbmail545 I didn't give you any velocity numbers for a 14.5" barrel, and you won't find any specific for that length, because one doesn't exist for the Valkyrie yet. Larue does have an 11.5" barrel for it though. Now Hornady makes a 75gr load with propellant specifically for 11.5" barrels with a muzzle velocity of 2321ft/s and muzzle energy of 897ft/lbs, but the Federal .224 Valkyrie 75gr load clocks over 2400ft/s from the Larue barrel; that's +960ft/lbs of energy. That's nearly 100 feet per second better even using powders with a burn rate intended for longer barrels. With the burn rate optimized for an SBR, it would go even faster.
@aspenfacer-valentine4397
@aspenfacer-valentine4397 6 жыл бұрын
ostiariusalpha So... The load optimized for an SBR goes slower out of an SBR than the standard loading? Because that's what you just said. I'm going to wait until someone who isn't selling the cartridge gives us velocity numbers before I make a verdict. But 6.8 and 6.5 are still going to be better out of short barrels, and I'd imagine the Valkyrie out of a 11.5" tube is going to be even worse than 5.56 in the muzzle blast department.

For reloaders, I don't see the advantage of this round in a bolt action over existing 6mm/243. If this caliber gets this performamce out of standard priced AR_15's, I'm definitely interested. For non reloaders, this would be great in a bolt action also ifatch ammo availability takes off. Will be cheaper than 6mm CM.

If you reload, then the grendel is the better choice because now you have 6.5 Grendel, 6mm Grendel, 224 Grendel (and if you wanted to window your mag you can move up to the .696BC 6.5 rounds) all on the same brass.

Jared Kattner & Brett Wilson: you both are correct, but you are also missing the big picture. With the .224 you're getting a lot more performance in the "AR15 PLATFORM." The Creed requires the AR10 platform, and is much more expensive than the .308 Thus, if I do decide to upgrade to the AR10 platform, it will be in .308 and not the 6.5 Creed. The .308 is more plentiful, cheaper, and just as effective as the Creed up to about 800 yards. If I truly planned on shooting a 1000 yards, or farther, I would then purchase the 6.5 Creed. In real life scenarios, whether hunting big game, or your fellow man in a combat situation, 1000 yard shots are the exception, not the norm.

Awesome video and it was great to see it at Young's. Precision AR's can be a little fickle on technique, those groups could be easily tightened if you stop gripping the grip, fully relax your shoulder (zero tension, think dead meat on a counter top) and trigger on your respiratory pause... do that and you horizontal and vertical fliers will be gone.

Ranier has had barrels selling for quite some time, and the brass isn't magic. Its basically 6.8SPC brass necked down to .224 projectiles. Drawing the case up in QuickDESIGN is simple enough. Given the case capacity, and working pressure, typical 5.56 friendly powders work. Accurate 2495 is generally my go to. QuickLOAD projections show a 90gr SMK can hit the range of 2750fps from a 24" barrel with very, very little work. Muzzle velocity from 16" barrels is still very respectable as well, in the range of 2450 to 2550fps depending on how you load it. Something like Accurate 2200 or 2015 provide decent velocity with a slightly reduced charge volume without dropping working pressure. Point being everything involved here is already a known quantity. The only unknown is whether or not companies will start making a wider variety of heavy .224 bullets to accommodate the cartridge. Personally I'd love to see a 90gr TMK and heavier bonded bullets. Over all .224 Valk is a solid cartridge.

This seems like a long range paper puncher cartridge more than anything else, and one confined to the AR-15 (not MSR-15, no matter how many companies try to change it) at that. If I wanted great long range ballistics I'd just bite the bullet and get an AR-10 in 6.5 CM or something similar. For a general purpose cartridge (which is what I think the AR-15 is best built for) 6.5 Grendel still takes the cake with better long range precision, as well as cheap factory ammunition so that I don't end up burning a hundred plus bucks of bullets if ever I go to a match. Plus, many states ban deer hunting with a .22 bore rifle anyway, so you lose the portion of the market that's trying to find the latest and greatest whizz bang whatever that'll kill animals deader than dead.

The .224 Valkyrie can barely beat the 6.5 Grendel at 1300 yards with factory ammo. But the reloaded can easily outperform the Valkyrie due to a much higher selection of high ballistic coefficient bullets. Also, Federal list the .224 velocity from a 24" tube. Put a 24" tube on a Grendel and run the 130 grain Berger OTM's with a bc of .569 and a velocity of 2550 FPS and your have identical ballistics out to 1300 yards plus the Grendel carries a lot more energy on target to the tune of 1000 foot pounds @ 500 yards vs 700 for the Valkyrie. This also makes the Grendel a much more viable round for hunting too.

The 6 Hagar does this with the standard lower too. But even after Bernoski wins several national championships, the Hagar is essentially dead. Brass is still available from Creedmoor Sports for a while though, but it ain't cheap. I would like to see the .224V test against the Hagar as they were designed to do the same thing with a standard AR lower/upper for 1000 yard performance. The 6H would have to have the edge in BC, but the cost and availability of .224V might be enough to switch.
