I got a chance to check out the new FeelFree Dorado fishing kayak and Overdrive Pedal/Motor hybrid drive at ICAST 2017. We saw the Overdrive last year, but it was still a rough prototype. It's polished and finalized now and features smooth gearing and a separate motor add-on, making this the first and only hybrid drive that offers pedal and motor propulsion within the same drive.
The Dorado is FeelFree's newly announced kayak, and this thing boasts some very innovative features like integrated navigation lights up front and lighting inside the cockpit and stern. They've revamped the steering mechanism to be more like a joystick and they're included tons of very clean storage for electronics, wiring, batteries and more.
This very stable platform is almost a kayak/boat hybrid itself, and will be very interesting to boat anglers looking to get into the sport of kayak fishing in a stable, comfortable platform with several propulsion options.
The Overdrive unit will be $1,100 for the pedals alone, with the option to add the motor add-on for $1,400 more.
The Dorado will retail for $2,995 with pedal drive included, and for the additional $1,400 you'll be able to buy the motor add-on.
Learn more at www.feelfreeus.com
Comment below what you guys think about this kayak and the drive unit or "feel free" to ask any questions and I'll find out the answer. I reply to every single comment!

They should incorporate, an option to charge you battery as you peddle.

That would be KILLER but the cost to develop that would be intense, and this boat would get even more expensive due to the technology. Sweet idea though dude! I guarantee you it'll happen before long...

I'd buy one myself just to see if I can do it, but they are WAY (WAY!) out of my meager salary range. One of these DIY guys will get a hold of one and figure out a way to add a small solar panel and keep it charged. It's not usually the big corporations that figure this stuff out, it's usually the little guy tinkering in his garage! For instance, the mods that kayak companies are coming out with now, we have been doing for many years but they started watching people do it on KZbin and said, "let's add that!"
@Kiddbass1

DEV-TV Outdoors I'm thinking on the concept, of a bicycle tire rotating the small generator wheel making lights work on a bicycle, but on a larger scale. This could also be used in conjunction with a solar panel keeping your battery's fresh for long trips and less fatigue. You could also power all your electronics and also install D.C. Plug for phone etc. The possibilities are endless. Someone will tinker and patent this.

+Kidbass. One of the very first peddle kayaks I seen was a DIY job and was basically a bicycle salvaged and mounted on a kayak, to put it simply and that was many years ago. There's a KZbin video of something similar. So that makes it totally doable. No one with any money or clout has thought of it yet! I have solar power of sorts on my kayak. Not the way I like, but I have 2 solar battery banks that I carry with me that power my GoPro clones for endless power. I've never run one dead yet. So that's totally doable too. Someone will read this and think "I never thought of that!" and make millions and millions on our conversation. Unfortunately, we won't be able to buy one, because they will be priced so high only rich people can afford it, like all the other good stuff!!!

I was sitting thinking the exact same thing as I was watching it. I mean they make a electric powered bicycle that charges the battery when they peddle and when they get tired they can use the electric motor. I do not see how or why it would make the price go up. You can buy a Chinese bike like that for a few hundred bucks.

So far the only Fishing Kayak I've found worth having is the Old Town Predator, so I might just end up with that one, but I am holding on a bit more in hopes of finding something more to my liking. Good video by the way! I enjoyed it, even though it breaks my heart thinking about what I can't get :) I should just up and move over the pond, everything would be so much cheaper as well ;)

I'm looking at and wanting the compare this to the Predator PDL. On it you get 12 turns of the propeller per one turn of the peddle . What is the propeller turn per one peddle on this peddle system ? Which one is easier to move by peddling in the water ? Can you peddle this one in reverse? When the motor is connected is there a reverse? Will you do a side by side speed test using the Predator PDL so we can see which one moves through the water faster with less energy ? This one is almost 1,000 dollars more in price between than Predator PDL. Also will you do a side by side stability test . I'm just wanting to see if this one is worth 1,000 dollars more if I don't plan on getting a motor . In my state if you get a motor you have to get a get it registered and get a boat number then pay taxes on it every year .
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 7 жыл бұрын
This boat isn't out yet, so nobody has gotten it on the water except the internal FeelFree team. I don't have the answers to any of these questions except that there IS reverse when pedaled. I'm not sure about with the motor, I kind of doubt it. Not sure what the gear ratio is for the prop. I can't do a side-by-side test unless I get my hands on both a Predator PDL and the Dorado, so I doubt that'll happen. Hopefully someone else can when this boat comes out.

Na, I like my Moken. The only thing I would change is I wish they offered something like the gravity seat for Moken 12.5. I understand that it is a tad narrower than the Lure and anseat that could be set that high would probably really work against its stability. And, the king fisher seat isn’t anything to sneeze at at all. Truthfully, this new monstrosity looks cool on first glance, but thinking about taking a paddle to it makes me want to shake my head. And if a “kayak” doesn’t paddle, should it really be called a kayak?
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 6 жыл бұрын
That’s why they don’t offer the same seat for the Moken, center of gravity would be too high for that hull. And this kayak isn’t made to be paddled, but it can be when necessary. Don’t know why it matters what ya call it. For some, this is the perfect platform. It’s not for me, and if it’s not for you, that’s okay! No boat is perfect for everyone.
@hiscreedjn
@hiscreedjn 6 жыл бұрын
Robert Field thanks for your reply. Our language and definitions for things are always changing- I get that, but the definition for Kayak is a certain kind of narrow boat that is propelled through the water by a double bladed paddle. No, it doesn’t really matter, I guess, except you don’t call a bass boat a kayak, or a John boat a pontoon. Honestly, I don’t really even see my Moken as a true kayak- not really. But it handles well with a paddle. I guess it means something to me because I grew up in the bottom of an open canoe. Bill Mason was a regular on my tv because dad was all into paddling technique. There’s no technique or finesse to it when a “kayak” paddles like a barge and you have to use a peddle drive. Some of the mystique is lost for me. And that’s just my opinion. You are right this boat is perfect for some folks! No doubt it would be a lot of fun and fishing would be a blast! At what point does a kayak cease to be a kayak if you can't paddle it efficiently and unassisted? A kayak is supposed to be paddled. I get the convenience of the drives, however, I still want a good paddling, stable boat as a base. I dig the hybrid idea and the ease of the zero draft, very cool.

+NoneForYou I hear ya buddy. No kayak is for everybody. But I think there are plenty of anglers out there who couldn't care less about whether or not they can paddle it. I'm with you, personally, but to each their own ya know?

I've got a Lure 13.5 and yes it's not a streamlined dart but if you don't have spaghetti arms it paddles just like any other yak. I can paddle around all day with no fatigue. The only difference on the Lure paddling-wise I've noticed when I got it was it didn't have the ability to spin it 360 dragging a paddle as easily due to the hull design. Other than that most of the people that complain about them being tanks, slow, or bad to paddle usually are going off someone else's review and not actual experience.

Maybe not on its own, but you can't say that when it's the only dedicated kayak motor of its kind. A lot of R&D went into developing it, and those costs add up. They have to make it last in saltwater, work well with the boat's hull design, etc.

My Twin Troller X-10 ( by Freedom Electric Marine ) has TWO salt-water grade MotorGuide ( 36 lbs thrust each, 72 lbs total thrust ) "heads" w/counter rotating props RECESSED & HIDDEN UP INSIDE each pontoon, and are completely protected by flush-mounted aluminum cages/grates, and is operated by twin, yet independent foot pedals with each having forward and reverse. It operates like a Bobcat or skid-steer. I can spin a 360 on-axis, even go exactly backwards, and hold my position perfectly in wind/current totally HANDS-FREE. Cost of each Motorguide head is $150 each. Props & motors never hit rocks, stumps, weeds, etc. Each pedal is TRUE variable-speed in forward or reverse. No dials to select "speed".......you barely press either pedal, the prop barely turns, etc. That equals all-day battery life for a 29 series 12 volt marine battery. 1 OR 2 anglers can stand, sit, even spin the elevated seats 360 degrees. 2 men can't capsize the Twin Troller if they tried. Cost of entire boat, ready to fish........$2,995. Just add the battery. Boat is 10' long x 48" wide, 175 lbs, and can fit in the bed of a standard size PU truck or SUV.......or is trailerable. Owners who bought the 1st Twin Trollers made 10 years ago are STILL using the original MotorGuide heads. Floats & operates in only 8" of water, and runs right over & through lily pads, grass, weeds, even over floating logs. Single-piece, seamless, roto-molded hull is practically indestructible. Also has an extremely strong transom for optional outboard motor. I bought my Twin Troller ( $2995 ), then bought a trailer ( Harbor Freight - on sale for $248, normally $375 ), built custom bunks out of 3 pressure-treated 2 x 4's, and bought a 3.5hp Tohatsu 4-stroke outboard ( on sale, new, for $950 ). My total cost with boat, outboard motor, trailer, and new battery was approx. $4,300. I wouldn't trade my Twin Troller for anything.

so on a boat or kayak that have build in light system, there are regulations those little underpowered lights dont look like they meet them, and it doesnt look like it has buit in deck lighting, and NO 360 degree lighting, SOOOO it would be easier not to buy a yack with no lights in the first place
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 7 жыл бұрын
+opticalriot first off, those regulations are typically state-enforced, so it depends on where you live. It does have built in deck lighting. The only statement of yours I can confirm is that it doesn't have 360-degree lighting, which is a requirement at night in some states (but not all).

+techstyle123 right and there are pedal powered kayaks that start at $1800. But a pedal and motor hybrid drive has never been done. The first of anything is always pricey, lot of R&D went into it. I could throw this into the back of my truck by myself. An aluminum boat isn't as versatile. But that's a killer deal for your dad. To each their own buddy. There is no "right boat," just the boat that's right for you. If this isn't right for you, no worries! I just wanted to show people what's coming out. Thanks for checking out the video bud.

They should sell a lot of them , maybe a dozen or so , I mean come on man , maybe for The extremist who had to spend as much as they can on something , but as a consumer I would turn my head at that retail , about 50% above what I would think of spending on a yak with a motor I would price that at 2900 with the motor , then it’s a little more realistic, Guarantee production costs are about 1600 to 1800 max per unit at a 1000 unit order, This is Just a personal opinion so I please don’t get butt hurt if you read this 😂

All that money where does the angler sit if he or she will be on the water for so many hours. Better getting a kayak with a small outboard fully kitted. In my opinion.
