I remember as a child in the 50’s smocking on gingham fabric to make a honeycomb design. Since the gingham is already a grid pattern we just connected the squares using embroidery thread. I have forgotten the sequence but I know the little connecting stitches were visible on the front and we never cut the thread … just knotted it when we came to the end of the strand. It made a lovely bodice for dresses for little girls.

I have never seen anyone tie off each square like you do. Seems very time consuming. I've smocked gingham before but never did it that way.
