In regards to the hinged trigger, its the same trigger as the fns-9. It is very gritty, but it smooths out over time. Just FYI

Your assessment, of modifications is incorrect. The FN 509 in particular, was made specifically for the military. That is why the trigger is heavy. That is also the reasoning behind other features. The was made for combat. Not civilian CC.

I’m not sure what you mean by assessment of modifications but you are partially correct sort of. Before it was known as the 509 it was one of many pistols that entered the military contract trial and it failed early on. FN decided to bring this to the civilian market to recoop their money as several other companies did. So yes it started off as an attempt as a military pistol but never made it. There were numerous press releases and videos stating this. So my opinions are my opinions but everything else is just known stated facts.

The gun is in my opinion amazing it all the bell and whistles, but that trigger has to be a priority for FN. The trigger really needs help it’s gritty and extremely heavy, hopefully with use it will lighten up, but overall it’s awesome.

I have carried similar or larger. What you may like is the new 509 mid size. It is more G19 size with some upgrades over the old 509.

How's the recoil impulse compare to glock 17?

I have a couple of 19s but no 17. I honestly cant tell much difference in recoil. If i had to pick one that is more enjoyable to shoot I would pick this one over all. Just my opinion though

Just came back from the range with a new out of the box 509 tactical. Completely disappointed! About 10 failure to feed with 124gr and 147gr even with the reduce spring. No wonder they lost the military contract.

Did you clean it? Factory ammo or reloads?

John Bruce out of the box with factory lubes was the problem. Cleaned it used light lube and worked fine. Using blazer ammo 124gr and 147 American Eagle. So far so good. No reloads.

You’re supposed to clean it out. Cosmoline can really gum your gun up and actually damage it. It even says in the manual to clean it before your first range session

Errmegerd..... dude.... too looooooong for a tabletop. You could have said most of that in 10 minutes tops. Good review info.... but people can’t spend 1/48th of a day watching a tabletop.
