I had a .30 carbine Ruger Blackhawk 8" Barrel and it was a flat-shooting hard-hitting pistol. I write to tell you that the weapon R A N G after you fired a full-power round. I hand loaded a lot back then. Everything from cast lead slugs in .30 carbine to shotshell capsules. They didn't make it ring but good old milspec ball ammo sure did every time.

The guy who was making that gun probably asked for someone to give him the stamp with white people writing. There's a good chance that the gunsmith involved didn't realise that, unlike Chinese and Japanese, English and German writing looks the same but actually isn't. Chinese writing and most Japanese writing uses the same characters, so a short phrase on a gun will have the same meaning but different pronunciations.

Except for the spurious German markings, it doesn't seem particularly cursed to me. Assuming it's both safe and usefully accurate, it would be a nice, handy sub-300 yard carbine, just like its inspiration. The only problem is the relatively low rate of fire because it's a bolt-action, but if your opponents also have bolt-actions, that's less of an issue.

If we didn't know it's "supposed to be" semiauto or select fire and it didn't say "WAFFENFAB OBERNDORF" we'd probably be talking about what a great rifle it was in-period. A friend of mine (long since passed away from Agent Orange exposure) did multiple tours in Far East, including Vietnam. He was a big aficionado of unusual guns. He brought back many collectables from various tours (he was at Diem Bien Phu as an observer for the newly created Special Forces (later called the Green Berets). He obviously made it out before things went completely to s**t. But during that tour and in his later tours he picked up all kinds of weird firearms (please don't ask how he got them stateside). He had everything from handmade guns to factory made models of unusual origin. One gun was even a converted WWII German K98 who someone (in Vietnam he thought) attempted to make semi-auto (really unusual gas system with an adaptor on the barrel end and under the modified stock) with a modified AK magazine in 7.62x39. Not sure if it worked and no one was brave enough to fire it. However, nowhere in his collection was there a bolt action M1 Carbine.

@@russbilzing5348 they are not rare at all in Europe. Our local gun store has racks of them and can't get rid of them... Some have factory threaded barrels with thread protectors and all. I've got one of these I bought from an estate sale twenty years ago. I paid $20 for it and thought for quite a while it was a Kyber pass gun. I found out it was Chinese about 15 years ago. I cast the chamber and it is indeed chambered for.30 carbine. It does indeed function well and is pretty accurate for what it is, 2 inches at 100 yards is normal for it.

I think this is a more brilliant idea than is immediately obvious. The M1 Carbine is a handy platform and was extremely popular.
