Ballistic gel testing the all new for 2022 Hornady CX 165gr 30 cal shot out of a 308 Winchester, 30-06, and 300 PRC. Most advanced monolithic on the market. Or so Hornady clames. Definently preformed well in the gel testing.
Only bullet recovered was the mid range one shot out of the 30-06. Retained weight is 163.9 grains

🤠 Ronbo (Montana Mountain Man) - Thank you for your reply! 😁 The Swift A-Frame is a Bonded Version (redesign) of the Nosler Partition! While I believe that the future of bullets is probably going towards the solid copper bullets or some new "non-lead" composite bullet (I bought a couple hundred rounds of Factory Ammunition - Horneday's Superformance 130 grain GMX for my 270 Winchester at $27.50/box about 6 months ago), the Swift A-Frame has served me well over the years! I am really interested to see what it does at lower velocities? I have used the 150 grain 0.277 bullet on elk - the last one being a 330 class 7×7 bull elk! But before I came to my senses about hunting with "Magnum" ("Mangleum") calibers, I became sold on the A-Frame 200 grain 30 caliber (0.308) bullet for my "Stump Thumpers"! It was the only bullet that would shoot well out of my rifles at extreme velocities (only flat based bullets would stabilize, not boat-tail bullets with the barrels rifle twist) and hold upon high impact ft/lbs of energy - 3350 ft/second out of my Lazzeroni Warbird (416 Rigby necked down to a 30 caliber) and approximately 3700 ft/second out of my Thor's Hammer (408 CheyTac necked down to a 30 caliber) for that 200 grain A-Frame bullet! What I "(re)discovered " is that it didn't kill them any faster than my 30-06 Springfield or 270 Winchester, but ruined a whole lot more meat! "Not Acceptable", but not surprising either! Now I preach the "Gospel of Non-magnum calibers", don't take those long range shots anymore, only wait for broadside shots, and don't listen to those "gun writers" and "internet experts" anymore about the "do it all magic/wonder guns"! I know their are no "magic bullets" either, but of all of the bullets I've tried on bigger critters like elk, I haven't yet found a better one than the Swift A-Frame! 🤗

we had a big tomcat that used to come around and beat the hell out of our tomcat, both seasoned outdoor fightin cats but this one was relentless....he'd whoop our cat's ass and eat his food in front of him and whoop his ass again...after discussing it with the owner of the cat 4 different times and them doing nothing about it and costing me 600+ in vet bills, i found my cat almost dead on our back porch....nursed him back, wouldn't let him out to "roam" etc.....caught the neighbor's cat out in our field lurkin around, about 70 yards, and i tagged him with a sst hornady 30-06 ftx....finally he hit the ground after about 3 seconds of air time, didn't move. i'm 6 ft tall and the length of what was left was still draggin on the ground and was thrown to the coyotes that night....nothing was ever said again about either......well done hornady, well done!.....😁

I started with Hornady 180 gr flat base psp. Bagged elk and deer with them. I recovered a few bullets in elk but they blew out deer. I switched one year to Sierra gameking 180 gr for my 30-06. Worked great out to 400 yards. Popped a whitetail at 35 and it literally threw it for a half flip. After that I went to a 130 in 270 for whitetail. This solid at 165 for a 30-06 sounds like a nice compromise. It really expands quick. These whitetail are maybe 16" thick I could down load them for these 150 yard and less shots.

Oddly, the specs for the 165 grain, 308 Winchester, CX factory loads are identical to the GMX loads of the same weight. Other new CX chamberings have improved B.C.s and expansion qualities, but all indications are that the 308 Winchester's only change is the CX name. That said, maybe it doesn't matter. As I recall, previous GMX bullets performed very well in your tests. Cheers! Btw, if you wanted to reshoot a 1750 fps load to catch it, I wouldn't object. :-) Happy New Year!

Other than the relief grooves on the shank of a bullet being cut slightly different and using a heat shield tip I can find no real differences between the GMX and the CX. I personally believe it has more to do with markening than anything. Hornady does say the ballistic coefficiencies are better, and they do use dopler radar to confirm BC'S in a bullets entire flight trajectory so I have no reason not to believe them. Yes I would like to get back out shoot some more at the low velocity and a bunch of milk jugs and what not as well to make sure I can catch one of them.

@@14goldmedals Yes, Hornady does its fair share of marketing, but I always chuckle when people make a big deal out of this. The simple fact is, all ammo companies are in business to make money. Marketing helps them to make money. They ALL do marketing. The more you market, the more money you'll make and the bigger you'll get. The bigger you are, the more you can market... and so on. Hornady is not some sort of evil giant, they just happen to be little bigger than some of their competition. Guaranteed those other players would market more if they could, that's just business.

Also, slightly dissapointed with the BCs. Should be longer and have a better BC for its weight being solid copper. Similar to lehigh, lagging behind against barnes, hammer.

In Hornady's video discussing it's new CX bullet, they suggested that the minimum velocity for proper expansion should be 2,000 fps (same for GMX). The CX bullet is an improvement over GMX by including the new heat resistant tip that until now was only on the ELD-X and ELD-M bullets; and improved BC by slight change in shape and driving bands which reduces drag. Hornady has put CX bullet data into their 4DOF library, which is a superior way to calculate trajectory over using BC alone. GMX data was never entered into 4DOF. The higher BC of the CX bullet enables it to maintain a higher velocity farther downrange than the GMX. In the video on the CX by Hornady, the staff suggested that for many cartridges, that would mean the effective range would be 500 yards with the CX, vs 400 yards with the GMX (given the 2,000 fps minimum for proper expansion). That is a generalization given the factory loads they will offer. Granted, if you handload or are at higher elevations, you could extend that range. What I want to know is if the CX bullets are easier to find an accurate load. I have read about the GMX, that many people could not get it to group with their rifle. It would be great if the CX has improved accuracy potential.

The .308's B.C. remains the same as the 165 gr. GMX. The B.C. improvements are only realized with certain bullets of specific calibers. There appears to be no improvement, other than the Heat Shield tip, with many of the new CX bullets.
@curtisturner9327

If you compare the 30 cal 165 And 180 grain bullets, the CX actually has a lower BC than the GMX. That’s why I’m confused with their statement that you can squeeze and extra 100 yards. Maybe in other calibers the BC is higher, but not with the 30 cal bullets that I mentioned.
