Great video! So I thought I’d add some fuel costs numbers to the discussion because I’m a numbers geek. So if we use 24.3 MPG for the GMC and I’ll give the Ford the EPA rated 19 MPG over the 17.3 because of the leveling kit. If you drive 12,000 miles a year you’ll use 631.6 gallons in the Ford and 493.8 in the GMC, sounds like an easy win for the GMC. But diesel is a lot more $, right now in my area regular gas is $4.49 and diesel is $5.59, these numbers could be very different in your area. Do the math and the GMC only saves you like $75 per year, and that doesn’t factor in DEF or extra maintenance costs. Of course if you’re towing that’s a different story, the ecoboost is notorious for getting really bad MPG towing. Keep up the cool videos!

One benefit of the diesel is it does get better with time so I wouldn’t be surprised if they do get 30+ MPG and if you delete, it would probably be 30 MPG combined 👍🏾
@matthewanderson9912
@matthewanderson9912 2 жыл бұрын
You got to go by the as tested numbers though. Because there’s plenty of 3.0 Duramax trucks getting closer to 30. So you can’t give the Ford nearly 2 mpg over what he got when you used the 3.0s as tested numbers
@ridingwithrusso7790

All good points gentlemen! And I think the overall point of my comment is you gotta run the numbers. The math would be very different in California opposed to Louisiana. Towing not towing. Justing pointing out that better MPG doesn’t mean less $.

@@ridingwithrusso7790 yes sir. Calculating actual cost per mile is important if cost to operate is important or a deciding factor. The same argument can be made with HDs trucks right now. In the past the diesel was typically cheaper to operate because the fuel price was similar and you got better fuel mileage. That’s not the case now. I have had both the diesel and gas engine in the current generation GM HDs and my diesel got about 2 mpg better towing than my gasser gets. Price of fuel today is $3.79 for regular and $5.65 for diesel in my area. So for me going to the races based off those prices and fuel mileage the fuel for the diesel would cost $25 more. So valid point but definitely need to use your actual results and not epa numbers.

I have to chime in. I purchased a BRAND NEW GMC Sierra with the 3.0 Duramax. Im not happy!!!I just towed a 2022 Rockwood Mini-lite from Omaha to Milwaukee. Here is my experience. 1. The trip was 500 miles, we used 3.75 gallons of def fluid, 46 gallons of diesel fuel and 1 qt of oil? This 500 mile trip cost about $200 or about $.39 per mile. If I had my old Ford F150 3,.5 Ecoboost using regular gas the I would be at about $.30 per mile. How does diesel make sense. 2. Plus! pulling that 22' camper around gas stations looking for the 1 or 2 pumps that have diesel fuel was a pain. The big stations cater almost exclusively to semis and the pumps do not fit the GMC. One fuel Stop I had to goto to 3 gas stations to find 1 with an operation diesel pump, don't know why but again a serious PIA. 3. Between low fuel warnings and Low DEF warnings, I decided this Sierra with only 1,400 miles HAS TO GO. I will take the loss and either get a Sierra with the 6.2 or go back to the 3.5 Eco. MY ADVICE, stay away from the Duramax. I do have a diesel jeep and its way more efficient.

I own a 22 gmc sierra 3.0l. I've never noticed a dead spot on throttle response at any position or speed. I have the 3.23 axles 4wd with 2 speed case. I think a 3.73 axle ratio would work better in these trucks ive noticed I can drop 2 gears in the transmission and fuel mileage increases.. can also use sport mode to make it hold the trans gear a bit longer before shifts and the fuel milage will increase. Im usually running above 25mpg best ive ever gotten is 43.4 mpg for a 25mi trip, 33mpg for 50mi, 28 for 400mi but I was babying it alot. Pulling my 8500lb tt I get around 12.5mpg with it.

Nice video. I’m pretty sure the transmissions are the same hardware wise. The only difference is software programming. As for the trucks it would just depend on what you plan to do with them. If you’re towing with a 1500 the GMs are far superior than the competitors. Maybe not much of a difference with open type trailers but when you go to enclosed and campers it’s a big difference.

@@tr4u5mp90 that wasn’t an Ike test. And I would say most any transmission would get hot on that test. A curvy two lane road that’s not even paved in spots on a very steep mountain towing at max capacity is a nightmare for any automatic transmission. Going 25-30 mph up a hill with constant shifting is much harder on a transmission than flat out on an interstate. Just like stop/go city driving is harder on a transmission than a flat out run up the Ike.

HD diesel owner here, and I knew cost of ownership was going to be much more than the HD gasser.....not even taking into account the $10k diesel option....it didn't matter to me simply because of the ridiculous power difference. On the 1/2 tons, the gasser thumps the diesel power wise. I may have missed it, but what is the price of admission of the diesel?? MPG isn't the only thing that has to be factored in. But as a Ford owner, I have to admit that my son did sell his 40k mile EB because of Ford's inability to fix the phaser rattle on start up. It did not affect performance.....he pulled an 8000 pound 5th wheel and it never affected reliability. The dealer bought the truck back from him and he made $2k over when he bought it.....though they couldn't fix it, they weren't too worried about it.

@@stevenhooten4275 Let me give you some context. It may be a condition of a broken heart. I have had 7 Fords. Five of them I got to 200k or more and my fusion I got to 323k all with relatively little issue. So when I went to get a truck I was going to get an F150. I loved the truck I chose, a 2019 Red XLT, FX4, EB and fast as hell. It was a Ford and I Wanted to like this truck, but it drove me crazy. The suspension and shock tuning on pretty much all stock trucks are bad but this was terrible. The vibration that the aluminum cab has is very noticeable. So I changed all my shocks over to Bilstein 5100 and it reduced the wheel hop, over rebounding over ruff roads and vibration a bit. I bought a 7000lbs travel trailer and towed it through the Appalachian Mountains and the truck was awful. It bounced and swayed just like JB said, it started misfiring and hesitating and through a shit ton of codes. In a McDonald's parking lot I had to change the coil packs, spark plugs and all 4 VVTi solenoids only had 40k on it. Two months after that the tranny starts going out. RPM hang, stuck in first gear, hard shifts, miss shifts, late shifts coming to a stop and then lurch forward. Brought it to the dealer 4 times, updated software, flushed and god knows what else. I had enough, I'm not so close minded that I won't buy anything else that's just ignorant. Sorry but the Ram as of now is a smoother and more solidly built truck.
