Unless they’ve changed it, dropping the Chevy shifter into L gives you manual control and shows what gear you’re in. I find that having a diesel for towing has the additional advantage of being able to pull into a truck stop for fuel. Much easier to maneuver! Adding equalizer bars to that combination will put more weight back onto your front wheels and stability should improve.

Yes, GM'S trucks still have Range Selection mode that allow you to down shift from a higher gear when towing and select a gear you transmission can go up to and no further until you push the plus sign to go to the next gear.

Comparable honda generator is going to be $4,500. It's portable but super heavy and takes up a ton of room in your truck bed. This Ford is a gamechanger and certainly the other manufacturers will copy it before long. The ford option is also only $750 on the hybrid. The Hybrid system is way too small on the F-150 PowerBoost to be helpful under load, so it makes sense that Ford would have it disabled during towing. With only 1.5kW capacity in the battery, it would be depleted almost immediately when towing, and the constant high power draw and likely high power return going downhill would be very hard on the system. PowerBoost will give best results in city driving. And I love the 7.2kW option! I wonder if the competition will start making this available on their trucks?

I wonder what would happen to "boost" level if you put shifting mode into manual and drop it a gear down from what truck has chosen to see if possible to gain some mpg while towing. What damage would towing in eco mode do to truck? Overheat electric motor, burn transmission overdrive components, etc? I'm sure you could use eco or normal with a under 1,000 lb trailer without damage. Thats like a full cab load of well fed relatives....lol

The problem with the Ford is that it has less weight capacity then the Chevy. You can basically never tow more than the Chevy due to that. The hitch weight of that trailer is probably close to 600 lbs empty. I really like the idea of having a built in generator on the Ford though. You could power much of a home with your truck in an emergency.

If I was going to do a lot of boondocking or even mountain camping in the national parks where it can dip to just above freezing in the middle of summer, the ford would be my choice. RV generators are currently in the Jurassic era. Noisy, inefficient, expensive to buy and worse to fix. They have to be run monthly at least 1/2 hour or they will just die and have to be repaired. The hourly rate to fix generators is as high as $250/hr.
@geoffmooregm3 жыл бұрын
I think the generator is a cool idea and for sure handy but it won't change the construction industry or camping. Most of the time on an industrial or commercial site you can't even get close to the work. You may even be parked in a remote parking spot. On a residential site you may be lucky to get near by street parking so now what? Run 200' of cord? Plus if your powering a couple guys on the tools and have to run out, everyone is down. Camping would be handy but personally a portable Honda put far away in the bush or behind a wood pile is far more convenient. They come in many sizes and are quite affordable. Don't get me wrong I would tick the option box if I was buying one but I would not be a decision maker for me. A portable generator is way more versatile.

I like both these trucks from Ford and Chevy with newer engine technologies, but at the end of the day my 1/2 ton needs to confidently & safely pull my 9,500lb loaded trailer. Chevys not equipped to do so from what it sounds like at 9000-9500lbs? My 3.5L ecoboost tows this trailer phenomenally well. Equipped with air bags on my truck, and 10 ply tires on both truck and trailer. As much as I like chevy’s 3.OL diesel, I don’t like the lower max tow rating that I’ve heard about a few times now.
