In this episode of my series “ New Forest Walks”, I follow a loop that takes in Frogham, Hampton Ridge, Amberwood & Ogdens - on the Western edge of the New Forest. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I park my car at the Abbots Well car park (free) on the Eastern side of Frogham (located about 2 miles South East of Fordingbridge) and start my 5 mile circular walk by checking out Rose Cottage - a delightful pink thatched cottage that was once lived in by Juliette De Bairacli Levy (the famous herbalist & prolific author).
Passing by the ancient Abbots Well itself, I make a small detour over Windmill Hill and down to Windmill Pond - where Juliette used to swim every day - before climbing up Hampton Ridge.
At the top of the ridge I get to enjoy some stunning 360 degree views across the New Forest before dropping down on to the Northern side to explore the remains of a Victorian Rifle Range. I then continue along the ridge, passing by the “illuminated directional arrow” that was used during the era when the area was a bombing range during WW2.
When I reach Amberwood Inclosure, I head South through the woods (exploring the remains of the long lost Amberwood Cottage), through an area that once had many Roman Pottery kilns.
After resting on the Eric Ashby bench in the Alderhill Inclosure, I cross the Latchmore Brook and just before the Sloden Inclosure, my route takes me West (along side the banks of the brook) back to Ogdens and finally back to my car.
My final destination is The Foresters Arms pub at Frogham.
NB: I may have pronounced Huckles Brook incorrectly!

What a great video, and what a wonderful display of clouds. Having stayed at Ogden's for many years,we are quite familiar with this area, but your superior local knowledge shows us places we had missed. Thank you very much.

Thanks Colin. There is certainly plenty to explore around that area - some of it easier to find than others!

Nice area there Dave. I’d already taken a look at your Facebook page and I remarked about the old pink cottage. Presumably it’s empty at present. I lived in a little thatched cottage for a while, so I know how dark they can be. That was a lovely pond towards the end which Logan was enjoying. It was amazing where so much water suddenly appeared from.

I believe that Rose Cottage is in the process of being sold so could well be empty.

Thanks Craig. That walk did have a little bit of shade in Amberwood Inclosure which would have been very welcome in the present heatwave!

A really nice walk Dave, I recognised parts of it from when I came to the new forest to go on a hiking holiday in 2020. Makes me look forward to when I return in August for another adventure! Thanks for making videos like this.

Great video again Dave and the New Forest never disappoints ! The whole Hampshire/Dorset border country is just magical as highlighted by yourself and in years gone by with the late and great Jack Hargreaves tv programmes who was another great lover of the area.

Thank you Mr Logan, sorry for my late response. As for being surprised about fish in the tiny, New Forest streams, I can assure you that there are still many, and of a variety of species. If you were lucky, or quiet enough to see them they were probably brook trout, which potentially become sea trout too. Many other fish are available as well, as the BBC would say. Give a woof to yer mate Dave. Thank you both.

Thank you. We could certainly do with some rain now in order to get some of the "Forest streams" flowing again. Last week I filmed a walk along the entire stretch of the Highland Water and so much of it is dry in the present conditions. I felt sorry for a little chub that was struggling for oxygen in an ever decreasing pool of water. Thanks for watching.

@@DaveFord Oh I do hope we get to see your take on Highland Water, these streams are so often overlooked, good to know that someone else has their eye on them too. Some rain is sorely needed. Very seasonal though these streams are, these recent years have been exceptional and show a trend that many still seek to deny....
