Thank you to Dr. Nilo Casimiro Ericsson, co-founder and former CEO of Dirac, and Senior Engineer Barak Shpiez for coming by to meet with me at my place. Again thank you to Barak, for speaking with me over video chat for 4+ hours straight. Also, thank you to Jakob Akgren, formerly at Dirac, for meeting with me and giving me all the info and equipment I needed to get this setup. I miss you being at Dirac. You were an awesome representative for the company. And thanks to the rest of the team at Dirac for making awesome products. I look forward to seeing what you do in this space.

Love the thought of this really working. AND my wife is a hard no to room treatment of any kind in our living room…so, this can provide a way for me to walk that line. I’ll wait on the implementation to see if there’s a way to use this with a Denon x8500H. If so, I’ll pre-order! 🧐 Take care guys!

No Dirac Live support on the 8500, so you also can't use Dirac ART.

Thank you for the video. The sub 150hz ART magic doest not realeted to relections.(in the term you describe them).The room is still there. you are still and will "get" the sound of the room, including late and early relections- at above 150hz . the system cant handel it now- by a choice of dirac and i think a smart one. luckily - most furniture/curtains/carpet etc.. - do deal with that to some extant. acording to Dirac(whitpapers) - you can contorl the sub 150hz support level, means you can control the RT60 and SBIR EFECTS at those specific and that means you can scale the impact of the room vs the system. what i found is that some people do love the bass more "wet" and not as tight and accourate as most others. they need to to linger. my thoughts are that for some may need time to adjust to this kind of quality - there is no better complimant to a speaker that its not exsist.

A question regarding the issue of "filling the nulls". My understanding is that nulls don't happen because there is a sound-sucking black hole in your room, they happen because sound waves of that specific frequency meet at the listening position with the opposite phase. I have also noticed that once you start correcting the peaks, sometimes the nulls become less aggressive too. I believe the right way to combat nulls should be to find the source that causes the trouble and correct only that. Not the entire system (for example it could be that output from two subwoofers meets at the listening position in phase in the whole LF spectrum except one single frequency where they meet at the opposite phase, not sure if this is possible but my understanding is that it is. If that's the case then just EQ that frequency out from just one sub and let the other one play alone without the canceling soundwave of the other sub). Is my thinking correct?

1) Is you're distortion problem from having not full range speakers? A fix may be to have surrounds with larger drivers with using this type of active room correction. I can also see this leading to larger amplifiers

In my studio space, yes the low frequency extension is a limitation. In the theater, I have more capable speakers and it's not an issue whatsoever. Just something I want people to be aware of.

@@joentell Curious, when you say more capable what are they? Surround speaker wise. Bookshelves or towers?

Joe N Tell, very interesting commentary on the complexity. The slider idea, yes that would be useful. Choose level of cancellation, or aliveness. BTW, a disappointment if they don't release to PC. I believe they will want all the hardware companies to incorporate it and those companies may not be willing to if there's a version for PC, which could be a substitute.

It sounds like an anechoic chamber being set up for playback. maybe like a compressor that gives playback impact, three dimension to give the instruments reality.

Will one of you make a video regarding room treatment?
@whitecrowuk575
@whitecrowuk575 Жыл бұрын
It should be compatible with previous as calculation is done on computer and filter just sent to AVR/processor but on the other hand speakers will have to play inverted frequencies that were designed for totally different channels hence this will need some update from manufacturer….

Correct. Bass management needs to be completely bypassed as well.

About reflections: In my opinion this is to remove reflections of lower frequencies from your room, not reflections present in the recording - hence in movies - if it was recorded outside you should feel like you are outside, if was recorded in room same thing - this should be preserved. The only thing cancelled out should be coloration (reflections) added by your room. As such there should be no downside to it.

This is mostly true for movies, but not always the case for music that was mastered to work in various "typical" rooms. It's source dependent, but I'm happy to have it as an option. If its effect strength could be changed in realtime, that would be nice.

@@joentell would be nice to have on/off option - so like you’re saying - music off, movies on and sorted. Would love to to try it but need to wait if and when Arcam would pick it up

Is there a “slider” to gradually decrease the effect from headphone-like to spacious?

That functionality has actually been worked out, verified and published by Dirac in 2015 - however not (yet?) productized. Search for the publication "Multichannel Room Correction with Focus Control" to find out more.

This could be a WAF tool but, as you said, the more full range the speakers the better…which means larger speakers which means lower WAF 😂

So you have a Room Correction Software Company adding a feature that it’s already suppose to be doing??? And then charging you extra for it, 😂
@joentell
@joentell Жыл бұрын
Yeah, room correction has always been a bit of a misnomer up until this point. It has mostly been "speaker correction accounting for some room effects" prior.

@@joentell come on Joe… this is a money grab and you are selling it for them….so the original “Room Correction” didn’t “treat” our rooms?? We were lied too?? We need “Active Room Treatment” now… marketing!!! 😂

@@bobbiebreese9377 I'm selling it for them? LOL. They should pay me a commission then! 🤣 Idk man, I was pretty critical of it in this video. Not sure if you watched the whole way through or not. But yeah, almost all the "room correction" software out right now is more speaker correction accounting for the effects of the room. They operate on the signal provided to the speakers so that what you hear is supposedly improved. None of them operate on the room itself, hence why I said it's a misnomer. If I placed something into your ears to improve the sound, you wouldn't call that room correction either right? Exactly. It technically operates very differently from Dirac Live and Dirac Live Bass Control. Putting ear plugs into your ears and using noise cancelling headphones might have the same intended goal, but they operate differently and deserve to be considered different products. Side note: what kind of ///M do you have?

@@bobbiebreese9377 ok, I'll let you slide on the accusation that I'm "selling it" since you have a legit ///M. If you had an M XXXi, I would've had to go in hard on you. 🤣 I had my F80 Manual M3 tuned to over 500HP and 500TQ and it was too much to the wheels with the stock tires. Fun to take to the track once in a while. Not so fun on the street. 0 to jail time in 4 seconds. 🤣 I hate the way the new bimmers look with the huge grill.
