@@CLIFFLIXbecause really, when was the last time you rode the riverboat? How about paid a visit to Tom Sawyers Island? The only reason any of us have in the last decade was because everything else had too long of a line, and this was literally just something to do that was peaceful. The only real problem I have with this is that we lose more of those attractions. Instead of something that’s walk on, it will just be another hours long wait. It doesn’t nothing to lessen the crowd like the former attractions. It just entices even more people to visit.

@@CLIFFLIXFans have been begging for a fifth gate for years. Cars, Galaxy’s Edge, Toy Story Land, Pandora, Villians, Indiana Jones, Encanto… …there are plenty of these “expansions” that would have made perfect fifth gate lands. All these expansions do is add capacity for even more guests to come. It does nothing to disperse them. In fact, it forces many to spend multiple days in a single park just so they can do everything. That adds to the crowds and the lines. More time spent in lines means angry guests who feel like they aren’t getting their moneys worth. It leads to guests not wasting their time purchasing merchandise and snacks. Last time I was there, they started that genie+ nonsense. I spent less time enjoying attractions than I ever did before, and even lesser time shopping, and that’s something I actually enjoy doing! It makes Disney money, and gets people like me out of a line.

Land usage in Florida is not the same. You are level with the water table, so when you dig... you hit water. And central Florida gets LOTS of rain in the Spring and Summer. So you have to create water pond/run-off collection areas to channel that water. And the Florida land is in the MIDDLE of nature "preserve" so to speak, so there are conservation considerations and ecological concerns that have to be researched and addressed ($$$ and extra time) before "shovel hits the ground" at the WDW resort.
@dontmesswiththeman

@@RetroFett yes but it’s not a “nature preserve”, it’s private property that Disney has owned for over fifty years and the land immediately behind Big Thunder is nothing but undeveloped timber. How are they going to make a 1770s Liberty Square, a Hudson River Valley mansion, the 1870s old west town facades (and Country Bears), a 1920s salt mine in the Bayou for Tiana's, and Big Thunder Mountain... all work in a circle surrounding this noisy, high-energy dirt race-course for modern anthropomorphic cars without seeming like a Six Flags park?? I'm just furious at this point. They don't care to keep what's important to the park's identity. But they'll pretend to! They'll pretend to so they can cash in on our nostalgia. Personally I’d “dock” the Liberty Belle at the station, convert it into a restaurant or show space, fill in the river to the right of that as my entrance to the new area, and leave the river to the left as a buffer between the old and new. Many memories of standing there waiting for the parade in the 90s, and the vibes were immaculate.
@ethansmith6926
@ethansmith6926 28 күн бұрын
I don't think people, or Disney for that matter, truly understand the importance of water features or areas within the parks. I'm not against filling in part of the Rivers of America, as I agree it can definitely be used for expansion, but they should not fill in all of it, as it provides much needed tranquility and beauty within the Magic Kingdom. Maybe keeping a small body of water in the northern section as a better barrier between Frontierland and Villains land would be good. Another thing I don't believe many are considering is how this will affect the sightlines and surrounding theming of Liberty Square and Frontierland as a whole. No more looking out onto the water from the Haunted Mansion queue. No more walking into Liberty Square and seeing Big Thunder Mountain or Tiana's across the water and being drawn to it. Instead, you're going to walk over there and find another mountain in the middle of the land blocking the view for anything else, which could easily mislead guests and cause them to be lost without a proper icon leading them along to the other rides in the back of Frontierland. I don't love the fact Cars is in Frontierland since it really doesn't make that much thematic sense, but if they are determined to have that IP in Frontierland there are certainly better ways to do it.
@loogoo
@loogoo 28 күн бұрын
And the whole point of having the Liberty Square and Frontierland areas on a "river" is part of the history of American towns that developed specifically along rivers and railway lines. It's a shame to lose that connection to create a land that has no connection to either of these historical time periods.
@J.Halllll
@J.Halllll 28 күн бұрын
People are using a map on an app to navigate the park, while I agree that having that sightline is nice, I don't think anything is really lost here. Not sure how this doesn't make sense thematically? In fact it makes a lot more sense thematically from an American West perspective to have snowcapped mountains around BTMR and the whole Western saloon vibe than a river with a steamboat. Realistically none of it made sense before either, you're at a theme park, did it need to make sense?
@dingrogu0504
@dingrogu0504 27 күн бұрын
I think the river should be narrowed, but I agree with keeping it. It provides a nice homage around BTM to the water that carved those rock formations. And also an homage in many ways to liberty square: One if by land, two if by sea, Washington crossing the Delaware, and "Just around the river bend" of all the new possibilities that surrounded our founding of Jamestown. It would be beautiful if they could do some trickling water over a rock wall between the frontierland walkway and Tom Sawyer Island. And then if they put Villians land behind it by Haunted Mansion, it would be cool to see the river water turn black with thorns jutting out and constant fog.

The design of DL compared to Magic Kingdom has always been better with Big Thunder being on the east side of the river versus being on the west side of the river. Also, one of the reasons WDW was placed on so much land was because this way they could continue to expand without having to remove old rides like they did at Disneyland. Walt once said in an interview that it was one of the hardest things for him to do was to replace any ride at Disneyland with another because for someone it was their favorite ride. So MK was intentionally made on a larger footprint than Disneyland so they could do just that. Disney keeps shooting themselves in the foot by putting so much infrastructure in back stage area then they don’t want to expand. They are only planning for 5 years ahead instead of 50. None of the infrastructure in that back stage area needs to be right there, it could be further out. The roads around MK could be rerouted and pushed back too. MK could be greatly expanded but they are just too lazy and want a quick fix that will bring in a lot of money now but not cost that much. They don’t have a long term goal in mind because most of these people don’t see Disney as their career only as a stopping point along their life career. So they are only concerned that the park be successful for the next few years before they get a better job elsewhere instead of wanting to leave a legacy for their grandchildren. Josh is only concerned about the parks until he becomes the CEO. Plus he was always a Disneyland type person and considers WDW more of an annoyance so I think he’s purposefully trying to make it not as successful as Disneyland.

as a west coast person, Avatar was by far the worst announcement we got for so many reasons. 1) Disney has the land to do a 3rd gate at the Toy Story lot and could have used Avatar as an anchor of the park on opening day since it seems like we are still a LONG way away from that even breaking ground. 2) using Avatar in a 3rd gate would have meant that each of the 3 parks has 1 of the mega scifi IPs and none being overloaded with 2. 3) what in the absolute hell does Avatar have to do with California. At least with the rest of the park they TRIED to make those connections, even if they're loose. 4) all the fan sites have convinced themselves that Avatar is replacing Hollywood which makes even less sense logically because you would then need transitions from Buena Vista Street and Avengers Campus that are both urban environments and you then have to work around the Monorail which also wouldn't make any sense in a hyper immersive Avatar land.

Once again Disney is stamping out the nostalgia factor that their parks have long had. Walt’s vision of going back to a simpler time, a time of innocence and nostalgia is completely foreign to the Disney of today. Tom Sawyer island has long been one of my favorite areas of the park, since my childhood, where a kid could go and explore and have fun being a kid again. I’m saddened and going to mourn it leaving. There’s nothing like it in any other Disney Park. One more reason why I don’t care about ever going back to WDW. It’s sad but WDW used to be my favorite theme park. But now I enjoy Universal so much more, and I’m very excited for Epic Universe opening next year.

I would love to see the villains area go more round the back and have a smaller entrance from fantasy land. Probably by moving Pinocchio restrooms and you could start by walking through the woods past Belles and it would turn to classic dark forest with twisted vines and open up to villains land. That would make a much better theme than strolling past cars to get there. I also think there is the possibility or shielding the railroad from the land with foreground rockwork and have the castle mountain looming up on the far side of the railroad. It would give more usable space in the land as I'm worried how much of cars land will be eaten up by the 'mountain'.

River/Island are going away and some people will be mad. But there is one thing I would like Disney Imagineers to do regarding Liberty Square Riverboat: 1.). Before draining the river, add a canal to the area behind Tiana’s Bayou Adventure (from existing service leg of river). 2.) Move the paddle wheel boat to behind TBA and fix it into place. 3.) Convert the boat to dining areas with a jazz stage and build the kitchen and restrooms in a separate but adjacent building connected to the new dining spaces. 4.) Create a dock path from TBA shops area to the new dining boat with “dockside” check-in and waiting area. 5.) leave a small water area around just the boat enough to make it look like a river connects to the docking area. Since this is behind Tiana’s it shouldn’t be visible from Big Thunder side, but can been seen from backside flumes of TBA (generating interest in possibly trying the new place). Bam-we keep a historical piece of the park and re-purpose it PLUS have created a new dining experience with some jazz entertainment for MK.

It seems like in the concept art, show scenes for the Cars attraction are strategically positioned in the opposite direction from pathways around it. The perimeter is also being filled with tons of foliage. I could totally see them staging the back of certain small buildings/structures to look like something that would appear in that area (country vs bayou) since you won’t see the back of it when you’re riding the attraction. I get the sense that Imagineers are trying to not have you be able to see a talking car driving next to Haunted Mansion or coming out of Country Bear Jamboree. I don’t think you’re going to get the same sound intrusion like Cars Land or Test Track because this is meant to be off-road terrain not a speed chase. I have a feeling that this is all going to work nicely once it’s finished.

My hope is that this ‘new Frontierland’ becomes an area similar to Grizzly Peak / GRR or Wilderness Lodge - beautifully landscaped (much like Fantasy Springs), natural elements - stuff Disney does really well. Waterfalls, streams, geysers, forests, mountain peaks. An area that can be explored -but also incorporates a Cars ‘track’ that moves through it, integrated into the landscape, adding dynamism and an e-ticket. If done right, it should feel like an enhancement of Tom Sawyer’s and ROA - not a replacement.

Yes, they need to really deliver on the rock work, landscaping and water features. But at Cars Land at DCA, you really hear those cars driving by...so every walkway, shop, and restaurant around that entire circle from Haunted Mansion to Big Thunder is going to hear that SWOOOSH constantly...I think it may drive people kind of nuts! Waterfalls will be critical to mask the noise and hopefully the cars are largely behind rock work so you don't have them driving right by you everywhere you go...in the colonial New England village and Old West town...jeez.

I live in central Florida now but grew up in Southern California. Mine Train Through Nature's Wonterland was my favorite Disneyland attraction (which eventually made way for BTMRR). The concept art for Magic Kingdom's "cars land" reminds me of that, with the mountains, forests and geysers. It's a subtle nod to 1960s/70s Disneyland Fronteirland for me.

Exactly! I was thinking how they always boast how much space they have in WDW, but instead they take away beloved (ok, maybe not so popular) classic attractions to ‘expand’. Not what I think most of us were expecting/hoping. I feel like Disney is intentionally messing with us (but, I know, it’s all about the💰).

I'm getting around to it replacing Tom Sawyers Island. I'm getting around to it being largely wilderness themed and being a segway between a much larger and robust Villians land. What I can't get around is it's theming to Cars, it just makes it clash so much more with the surround attractions and theme than it would otherwise.

Walking out the Hall Of Presidents to see a Cars type of land is just bad. This is almost like replacing history with IP's. Why not bring some type of Pocohantas themed area to Tom Sawyer's Island. That's something I could get behind and would keep faith with Frontierland.

With the steam boat on display, it'll be another treasured Disney artifact after so many years of guests riding it. Having more Cars details in another Disney Park resembles Cars on the Road. The villain floats from the Disney parades of old ought to be used again for Villains' Kingdom and that display shelf with the head of Snake Jafar can be moved into it.

It is not an expansion, if you are taking away things that already exist. That called a replacement. This is devastating to the theme of the land, and will completely destroy the character. I thought they might shorten the river and move the railway a bit like they did for Star Wars, and use the space outside the berm for the attraction. Shame on Disney for this .

I wish they kept Rivers of America and put large bridges over, and kept the Riverboat Bell as well. I LOVE that riverboat. They could have put a New Orleans style band on that river boat and celebrated New Orleans even more, to go with The Princess and the Frog. but PLEASE have an actual land with landscape to explore and go around. I LOVE walking around nature, and having that as part of Frontier Land is absolutely awesome. Have Disney shops and eateries, and the attractions, be within that area, with longer paths for those who want to explore, and shorter ones for those who want to get there faster. Thank you

Remember that Disney shortened the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island in Disneyland, and at the expense of closing down some classic attractions that are quintessentially Walt Disney over an extended time, for a Star Wars land that didn’t work out. Sounds like Disney is repeating the same mistake in Florida.

@@-dtuyhnjhggvjjjn it isn’t so much about the speed of travel between attractions, but more about crowd flow in the park. If crowds are more dispersed, the travel time wouldn’t be an issue. I’m sure no one’s ideal day at magic kingdom is spending several hundred dollars or more to just be trapped in a sea of people. I’ve had times where I’m literally feet from Haunted Mansion for my return time and I can’t get to it because of a huge group of people or scooters or strollers etc. Instead of taking the one and only path through frontier land, you will now be able to take multiple paths and avoid the parade route during festival of fantasy. Not only are they adding the new walkways, they are adding attractions that will pull people in. It’s going to help so much.

Paving over rivers of America is a horrible decision. I know it doesn’t get a lot of foot traffic but it provided a valuable ambience that tied the haunted mansion, liberty square, and Frontierland together. It’s ironic that radiator springs is paving over another rural town when there is plenty of unused property around the magic kingdom, the designers obviously didn’t get the theme of the first cars movie.

Unpopular opinion here: I’m excited that Cars is coming to MK and that Tom Sawyer’s and Rivers of America are being removed to make way for it! I’ve been coming to Disney for years (and even did a brief stint working there 😅), and I’ve only gone over to Tom Sawyer’s once. It was never worth my time and trouble to go again. It is definitely underutilized space in an area that is some of the most prime real estate on earth. We can be nostalgic, but at the end of the day, it’s a great business decision and those have to be made sometimes however unfortunate. I’m sure no one will agree with me, but that’s okay 😂

I’m still very much in shock, but I think you’ve made some good points in this video that are helping me to feel a bit better about the change. Like every other redefining change we’ve seen from Disney in the past, I’m sure all will be well once the dust settles.
