Episode 399 - New games are still being released for these 30+ year old video game systems, and it's awesome! Some games are pretty simple homebrew affairs, while many are full-fledged properties that would stand above the rest back in the day. Let's check some recent-ish titles out!

To be fair, current "homebrew" developers enjoy massive advantages over the older original game developers. The TOOLS are so much better now, from graphics to sound to music to even coding languages (Now you can program an entire Sega Genesis game in C, back then assembly was the only option). But the biggest advantage is TIME, the older original developers only had months, sometimes weeks, to make a game. Now "homebrew" developers can take years to complete a game.

New Mega Drive/ Genesis games have a certain look to them, I'm not sure if it's the chosen colour pallet or if it's a special Dev kit but they don't have that original Mega Drive/genesis look. Not complaining it's just an observation.

That Neo Geo beat em up looks amazing! I’ve always been curious to why Neo Geo had so few beat em ups. Heck it even hade more shmups!
@callak_9974
@callak_9974 2 ай бұрын
Probably because those weren't as big in the 90's, it was all about the 1-on-1 fighting games, like Fatal Fury, King of Fighters, Samurai Showdown and various other one offs. SF2 blew up in the arcades near the beginning, then there was Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, etc.
@MagisterHamid
@MagisterHamid 2 ай бұрын
@@callak_9974 I understand but I have to disagree. Neo Geo came out in 1990. Final fight came out in the arcades in 1989. It spawned loads of beat em ups. Heck even Capcom on their CPS1 and CPS2 arcade hardware and Konami had loads of beat em ups in the arcades. Cadillac & Dinoaurs, Vendetta, Alien vs Predator, Captain Commando, Simpsons the arcade game, The Punisher and many more were released in the 90s. Both Konami and Capcom and a few other developers released loads of them in the 90s. By comparison SNK released very few. The ones from SNK aren’t very good either. Which kind of makes me wonder that they didn’t really put a big effort into the genre. They put a lot more effort into shmups and traditional fighting games.
@richardfan7157
@richardfan7157 2 ай бұрын
TBH most Neo Geo beat em ups sucked. The first two Sengoku games are just boring due to enemies dying in 1 hit, Burning Fight is an average ripoff of Final Fight, Robo Army and Mutation Nation are okay, and Ninja Combat is dreadful due to the unnecessary complex controls. The only good one is Sengoku 3 which came out at the end of Neo Geo's lifespan and even then it's rather repetitive.
@MagisterHamid
@MagisterHamid 2 ай бұрын
@@richardfan7157 that is exactly my experience. For an arcade system it had very few decent beat em ups. It’s clear that SNK weren’t playing in the same league as Capcom or Konami.

We reviewed Astebros together with St1ka on the New Game Old Flame podcast. I definitely felt that the game was a bit harsh on deaths and really prevented progress, knowledge what’s what and experimentation. I also played only with the sword guy so that could’ve been the problem. After the review I went back playing with the Mage and some use of save states and had a ton of fun to beat it! Maybe after that beat I could play it again without save states but they definitely helped me to learn the game.

life on mars looks like it would do better with the camera perspective zoomed out just a bit. and livelier colors to help better differentiate between the different types of sprites (effects, monsters, environment) but all in all the visual style looks like a dream game i would have had back in the 90's. I'm totally getting Alien Carnage, Abuse and Bio Menace vibes.

Good video; never was aware of Dinoforce until watching this and it looks like a solid middle-of-the-road type of PC Engine Hucard shmup. Vengeance Hunters is a great choice for the Neo-Geo as the console had a lack of scrolling beat-em-ups compared to all of the 2D one-on-one fighting games. The platform is so well suited to the beat-em-up genre so glad to see a new one get developed.
