@pmailkeey I would certainly agree a good electrician would not do this he would complete his work my suggestion is a young and inexperienced gas engineer done his own wiring as he might have done this many times before but failed to check with a multimeter he probably went through the wires one by one with his fingers that's where the mistake is made and then gave up as it is probably getting dark rushing around as usual
@dwhyte33925 жыл бұрын
pmailkeey that’s not true; the bodge jobs and errors are mainly through the ridiculous amount of pressure put on engineers by their employers to too many jobs in one day. I spk from experience.

One of the best bits of advice I can give for making electrical connections is to look at the terminal once you've made the connection. Look into the end of the terminal to check the terminal screw in on copper and not insulation.

Use bootlace ferrules if connecting to chocky block. Never assume the mains is isolated by switching the fused socket off. Always isolate at the fuse board as the live/neutral could have been wired the wrong way round. Buy a voltstick which is a useful tool for indicating a ‘live’ connection without using a multimeter. However, if you’re not electrically trained you shouldn’t be within 10 feet of it.
@AllenHart9994 жыл бұрын
Very good feedback. Thanks.
@richiecatpugh6 жыл бұрын
Just a quick note from a spark - if the spur is on but the boiler is off then ‘turning the spur off’ doesn’t prove you’ve isolated the boiler. I know this example has all the cables in view but in the real world there may be more than one spur in an airing cupboard eg old programmer/wiring centre and old immersion and if cables are concealed you wouldn’t necessarily know which does what....for the viewers be careful diving straight into a wiring centre or boiler cover just because the nearest spur is off ESPECIALLY if the boiler is already off and operating the spur doesn’t have the effect you were expecting

We need to always test to make sure its safe, the more a gas engineer gets used to using a multi meter the better. Thank you for your advice.

@@AllenHart999 A multi meter is a great tool but should not be used to prove dead. We have to use a martindale voltage indicator that you test before and after. In reality i know everyone use multimeters but its easy to blow an internal fuse or damage a fuse lead and think something is dead when it is infact live. Just watched a couple of your videos and really enjoyed them. Subbed
@peterpeterson99036 жыл бұрын
@@Marks-Garage Test lamps can still suffer an internal fault and give a false reading, just the same as a multimeter. Before and after using test lamps or a multimeter to ensure correct operation you test them - often on the better quality multimeters this is just a case of touching the leads together in a test mode and then you know the unit to be working - on cheaper multi-meters a continuity test also usually serves as the instrument check - if you touch the probes together and get a beep you know the multimeter circuitry to be working correctly. A multimeter is an instrument that many people don't understand or know how to use properly, which is why test lamps or a voltage indicators became the norm - simple to use (no settings) and easy to operate (using a multimeter can sometimes required 3 hands to probe circuits and hold the meter if no-where to put it) it has been been born out of creating a simple, idiot proof process. However, a multimeter is no less an adequate instrument for checking circuits and can be used to indicate far more than test lamps. Having said that, in my experience an electrician with a multimeter is dangerous as they don't often really know what to do with them - so that goes back to what you say, "We have to use a martindale voltage indicator that you test before and after." - basically you are being told to use something because you are not to be trusted with a more complicated instrument is what that boils down to. Sadly, based on my observations, this is due to the new generation of programmed electricians who don't really know what they are doing. They are often very good at running cable from A to B and ensuring the installation and test readings all comply but don't actually have a good grasp of electrical circuitry and control beyond getting cable to things. Try and explain simple controls or emergency lighting circuits or whatever it may be and they look at you totally blankly because they don't actually know what is going on. Thus why they are given test lamps. They are simply programmed to follow some instructions. Not all but many are like this and it is getting worse as the old boys retire and leave the kids.

There was no incoming neutral from the supply . So in essence what you saw was Live To Earth. As the supply Live went through the boiler and back out on the Neutral connector on the Boiler. As there was no incoming Neutral ( Due to neutral wire not being terminated correctly) The circuit ended at the neutral terminal block.
