I was issued an H&R M16A1 when I was stationed in Germany in 1986, the stocks were made out of Bakelite so there was no real flex in them. It was a great weapon as long as it was left in Semi Auto any F/A fire at all and it would jam up tight, probably just overly worn from a couple of decades of service.

@richardsvenum8452 Failure in FA sounds to me like an issue with the buffer weight or a degraded recoil spring causing bolt bounce. They'll typically start out fine for the beginning of the magazine but as the first rounds are stripped away the magazine will no longer produce enough drag to inhibit bounce and you'll get light strikes if any at all.

When I went to Army basic in 1974, I was issues a POS Colt M16A1, just like everyone else. Those training weapons were WELL used to say the least. I would guess mine would be capable of 3 inch groups at 100 yards, just judging from all the times I shot it and saw the bullet impact something down range. When I got to my permanent station in Germany, I was issued a brand new H&R M16A1. It was like a totally different weapons from the Colt. It was heavier, it was solid, it was accurate. It was the best M16/AR I ever handled and shot. About 10 years ago, I bought a Sigarms AR style weapon in 5.56/.223. It is a very solid rifle and it shoots well. Does it shoot as good as that H&R I had in the Army? No. Close, but no cigar. The M16 had a 20 inch barrel I believe, this Sig has a 16" barrel. The Sig is nice, well built, but man that H&R was just so solid and tight. The quality was very high on that H&R.

Thank you for the detailed update on your issues with your H&R and the steps that Mike took to take care of you, that is impressive and the way CS should be done. Im on the ArfCom thread as well, and have one of the same first batch as you, serial number in the low 40s. Curious, did they say anything about this being a one off issue or could there be a concern with all of the guns in the first batch? I have not yet shot mine, as work has been too crazy. I may break out the calipers today and take some measurements, as I think it was you that posted those pictures on the forum showing the front sight block. I agree with you on the furniture, it is fine, but i decided to buy some OG USGI furniture, from USOrdinance. Little pricy, but true period correct and I love the patina/scratches, just completes the rifle!
@JaredAF
@JaredAF Жыл бұрын
I've looked at the OG furniture on that website, but I think I'll just wait for the repro retro AR market to fully mature and we can finally get some decent A1 furniture on the market. He did not say as to whether this issue was present throughout the entire first batch. You could try using a straight edge/steel rule to determine at least some level of straightness between the gas block and the upper. You can also take measurements around the gas journal using a depth gauge like I did; the sights on my rifle weren't canted they were actually just off center by about .030". Thanks for watching and commenting!

I have one in the 30's, been to the range once but only took it out to 50yds. With windage centered and not even touching the front sight post I was an inch or two off to the side. One click with the windage and was grouping perfectly @ 50. I assume because I haven't even had to adjust elevation that sighting at 100 shouldn't be an issue. I also had 0 malfunctions with about 150 rounds through it.

M16A1. COOL piece. Between '78 and '81 I never drew one that wasn't worn out, no finish, and nothing matched anything on the weapon. The saving grace was at least All the rifles had cleaning kit buttstocks and complete kits. And we never drew clean weapons, always dirty. Pistols, rifles, and the Pigs. Just absolutely filthy. It was so bad we'd go early and draw our weapons and take an hour scrubbing them and then go back and get squared away. I'll say though, our worn out .45's, M16's, and M60's ran like sewing machines! I thoroughly enjoyed shooting it! More so than the M-14's we were also assigned, because of the weight. ( We loved shooting the M-14 on the range, as each of us was assigned a specific rifle and 11 mags. We didn't baby them, but we sure didn't abuse them either!)

@@jakeweston8616 A decent amount of people I would say given that the AR is a varmint type rifle when it comes to hunting. It can be used for medium sized game at closer ranges(although some states don't allow it for anything but small game) but is most ideal for small game. Personally I use mine for small game hunting but I usually do use 55 grain handloaded bullets. There are a lot of people that prefer 40 grain though so saying 1/7 is totally superior is a bit of a stretch. A lot of people compromise for a 1/8 or 1/9 twist barrel.
@jakeweston8616
@jakeweston8616 Жыл бұрын
@@redtra236 Didn't say it's totally superior. If you use an AR15 as a varmint rifle then a 1/12 is ideal for the lighter loads. But the gun is originally intended for combat/self defense therefore heavier loads are preferred. This is why all of the manufacturers who sell to the defense market use 1/7. If you are one of the many who buy an AR15 to plink with the cheapest ammo you can find, usually wolf 55gr fmj, then a 1/9 is great. I would much rather have this kid's AR in 1/7 so that I could enjoy the 55 all the way up to the occasional 77gr match. These are the loads that are originally intended for this gun when used as a combat/defense rifle.

We can get 30 round here at shops, we ignore the BS law, but no one carries the metal 20 rds. Obviously -no one will ship them either since I'm in CO. What a pain.

I’ve got the Windham retro AR-15 and highly recommend it. It’s got the look of my old service weapon from my army days in the 1980s, but with modern performance features like the 1:7 barrel, and most importantly for a lefty like me, the A2-style machined in brass deflector. Didn’t especially like getting hot brass down my shirt back in the day….

I was told years ago by a guy I worked for (the owner of the company) that EVERYONE makes mistakes. It's what you do AFTER you make the mistake that makes the difference. Trust me, these guys are GTG. I would buy something from them in a heartbeat. (And plan to. I need an H&R build!)

Rolling upgrades on earlier XM16s, same reason you find them with different markings on the lower. But a brand new M16A1 after the TDP was finalized would have a birdcage

Most M16A1s have a bird cage, I think some of the first ones still had the 3 prong though. The XM16E1 is the one you're thinking of I think. It also only has a partial fence.

I will say that the Wyndham weaponry A1 government is surprisingly more clone correct than it should be for its price of about 900-1100 USD. The C7 upper is basically the A1 upper just with a brass deflector, the Hand guard is A1 correct with the flat inline Barrel ring, the pistol grip is A1 correct, then to my surprise the butt stock that came on mine was an A1 trap door butt Stock I even had a type D stock ready to swap it out with but didn't have to. Then you got the Tear drop forward assist and A1 flash hider. So if you're willing to do a barrel swap, you could take from a 90% correct clone up to about 97% clone correct. As the lower, finish, and brass flector won't ever be clone correct.
@JaredAF
@JaredAF Жыл бұрын
Yeah when making the video I spliced in that image and was actually kind of surprised that's how they look now. Back when they first started making that A1 rifle I wanna say 2-3 years ago, it was just their flat top 20" with a C7 upper and triangle handguards. I guess they've gotten closer to correct with the availability of these retro parts increasing. Their triangle handguards look higher quality than the brownells furniture/what comes on the H&R. No way to tell for sure without one in hand though. Windham is great though, my first AR was a Windham 20" and I adore that rifle.
@Urzaban
@Urzaban Жыл бұрын
@Jared A. Frame yeah I remember early reviews in 2020 pointing out how it was mostly an A2 make to look more A1 like. My best guess that is Wyndham wasn't solid on the Retro craze as reproductions mostly fail in this industry, so they wanted to test the waters and see if it did good enough to justify its production then take more steps to make it accurate if profitable. I bought mine in 2022 so it's well after a few changes were made, and it's been a tank. I do plan on getting an A1 pencil barrel and sight tower for it from Fulton Armory just to make it even more accurate to the original.
@JaredAF
@JaredAF Жыл бұрын
@@Urzaban Sounds rad. I wish my 2018 Windham 20" had the lowers they use now; the newer cerroforge lowers have this angular or triangular sort of reinforcement on the buffer tube area of the lower and it looks exactly like the ones we had in boot camp. Mine just has the standard A2 reinforcement there with the flat edge on the bottom.
@Urzaban
@Urzaban Жыл бұрын
@Jared A. Frame yeah their newer lowers are extremely nice and I can understand wanting to have as close as possible to what you train and carried. That's reason I've shopping Gen3 glock 23's as of late due that being what I use and carry at the prison I work at.

@d30gaijin
@d30gaijin Жыл бұрын
@@JaredAF I realize what happened. I watched your 1st video too. It sucked you had to send the rifle back to PSA, and it sucks more that they didn't get you the correct twist rate. I am a Vietnam Vet and a long range competitive rifle shooter. I know all about twist rates. The original 1/12 twist rate is much more conducive to accuracy with the lousy 55 grain M193 FMJ. Think of it like a car wheel that is out of balance, the faster it spins the more it shows it's out of balance. Since FMJ bullets are formed from the tip (unlike a hollow point that is formed from the base) the hollow point bullet is much better stabilized at high rotation speeds, typically more accurate. FMJ bullets with their exposed lead bases (typically very uneven) and benefit from a slower twist rate. And I don't know why I am wasting my time here telling you this since I am pretty sure you don't care. Be that as it may, enjoy your new rifle. I am super happy to see PSA stepping up and remaking the H&R M16.
@JaredAF
@JaredAF Жыл бұрын
@@d30gaijin To be fair he did offer me the option of going with a 1:12 but I would have had to wait a couple more weeks. Eventually I'd like to do a test/practical application of 1:7 accuracy with 55gr ammo.
